  1. I still fail to see the whole mobile SL allure, and what it would bring in the grand scheme of things. Even in new users or revenue. The kids already have their IMVU dressup or what not, never tried that, but seems very restrictive and unappealing to me. My phone is always with me, always connected unless I'm in a meeting. But that is only because I happen to be a freelancer and need that work e-mail reaching me saying "can you take this on?" Need that to pay for my broadband and my pc I used to be in the camp "how could you enjoy or even be in SL without a desktop". Well, laptops are actually getting usable. Not to the extent of a desktop, but actually getting a lot better upgrade wise and out of the the box wise too. BUT, I don't get what you can do on a mobile with respect to SL. I made sure my laptop has at least a good Ryzen 5... I have a half decent Samsung, but... SL? On a mobile? What can you even do? I mean, you are either in SL or not, right? Unless you really need to keep up with certain things? I'm sure Animats can inform me in a friendly way why I'm a Luddite
  2. I suggest you create a sub forum for something less controversial, like religiion or politics. Please don't btw
  3. Just a bit curious though. What does voice bring to your SL that a non-SL voice would not? We seem to be speaking (as it were) totally past each other here.
  4. Agreed 100 percent. Like I said, I choose to have voice off because it's usually noisy AF (I gave Tarkov as the worst possible example of voice I've ever experienced). I use voice, I just turn it on as needed. Default for me is off. I don't think we're really that far apart.
  5. Agree with 99 % of what you say, but can't quite agree on the latter. There seems to be more and more viewing voice as the normal thing to do. Just basing that on having made an effort to go outside my regular places such as MCs (getting more and more prevalent there too, btw) and actually exploring the grid quite a lot. Just my observation, take it for what you will.
  6. Returned from a bit of gaming and established that yes, Doom-alikes is sorta a place for me. To take a break. Most recent Doom generations of course, but prefer the sneaky method to the all out one . Tried lots all in between, liked lots, but... Escape from Tarkov? Give me a break! The voice there is just nuts. Please don't kill me? Nope, not my cup of tea. Prefer my inventory to be intact as well. More power to you if that is your thing, but like I said I SL is a place for me to breathe. Not just just to land, drink Red Bull for 24 hrs and either go on a rampage, raid or sneak up on an unsuspecting foe. Team or not. Prefer not. Now, more than ever in 2023, SL is not a game. For me. And a place to be quiet if I so choose.
  7. SL is not a dating platform, though. Unless I'm totally mistaken it's a global metaverse where people meet.
  8. Yep, I turned off voice as soon as I knew how to. Not only b/c of the background noise, but b/c way, way TMI in your face. Or ears, as it were. Sheesh...
  9. Before you assume I'm anti voice, I'm not. I use it. As one of the available SL tools I might use. It's just more and more folks seem to assume you have to have it on by default, and you have forgotten somehow if it's off. I never do. Voice is, to me, always off by default. It's just something I might turn on, like maybe for some MC rideouts and stuff like that. Part of SL freedom for me it not having to wear a headset, and taking a bit of time to reply (not too much, of course, be considerate). Not having to feel like you're in Zoom or Teams, or in a... well, game (yep, I said it. Just coming from a point where logging into SL should lower your pulse, not going into fight mode). Listening to a playlist or a podcast freely. Not worrying about what anybody else hears. Yes, I know it's a very old topic, rehashed again and again, but it turns up more and more for me on a regular basis even in places where I sorta wouldn't expect it. Or is it just a positive sign of more signups that we just have to live with?
  10. Years ago the Firestorm team gave away a motorcycle that was so slow in 1st gear and stable enough that anyone who could walk in SL could basically drive it. Still looks decent enough for an old sculpty, basic ACS 6, no frills. Handles pretty well still, I just dug it out of my inventory, and I'm someone who does the whole chasing leaderboard times thing. I traversed at least 80 % of the Mainland on it way back in the day. There really is no shortage of rez zones on the Mainland. Fixing region crossings would sure help with some user retention, absolutely. Provided new folks actually know what the Mainland is . I'd venture most don't. I had absolutely no idea, had to have it expained to me. Guess a lot still somes down to short, condensed and readily available info.
  11. Are there still pop-ups with basic "How to" tips in newcomer areas? If not, there probably should be. A couple of friends and I ran into a newbie today who didn't even know how to respond to IMs. They tried to respond to group chat in local, for example, turned out they'd joined a couple of groups without even knowing how they did it. "Am I in a group now? Is that bad? Is it forever? How do I get out of it?" Kinda illustrates that newcomers come with all sorts of experience levels. On the other end of the spectrum are gamer newcomers who run around like Duracell bunnies. Slow down, take a breath and look around a bit, grasshopper
  12. In SL it tends to be the total opposite way around. Well, used to be at least. Folks just live their SL and as a side effect might get very very gradually RL over time, if at all. At least traditionally. I see more and more folks just hopping into to SL with mic on full blast just shouting hi to anyone. In my day (when it was snowing everyday and we had to walk uphill both ways to get to school) you just sorta eased into it. If you want to disprove your friend you'll need patience here.
  13. If the deafault was WASD (which works just fine in SL) instead of arrow keys that would put off a lot of people too. I can use WASD just fine, but I can also use a stick shift and drive in the UK. (although when driving in SL, I've worn out llots of arrow keys on keyboards, I mean you have to be more precise when driving here and be more alert to the very minute details than in most games than what WASD or mouse action allows for, reason why old school arrow drivers populate the leader boards a lot I guess). To look around, for building or anything else, it's just Alt key plus mouse. Muscle memory can be relarned, but the first stuff sits kinda deep.
  14. Yikes. Don't people automatically choose show on map before visiting a store/a new place? If not, why not? If it says "This is Lara and Joe's home" it's a pretty good indicator that the LM is old... No need to land in someones bath tub. To creators: If you have a large store, please have a TP link directly to the item. It can be done. Not to a landing place where I have to search endlessly.
  15. To be actually on more like I was back in back in the days. Not just being logged on and participating here and there, but being actually on. To keep this weird world alive. If that makes any sense
  16. Dona nobis pacem indeed. Something we sang in preschool, ingrained in me ever since. As a Nordic I've since checked with Odin, and he approves of this message. Happy Jul (yule) to all! Also to you Orwar.
  17. This is so true. Think back to when you were new. I rode a motorbike all around most of Mainland without even knowing I was on Mainland. Took an Irish angel (she's Irish and had an angel avi at the time) to land in front of me when I took a break and explain all the differences to me. Ah, the glory of being new...
  18. I'm genuinely curious. How on Earth could SL be usable , other than maybe for messaging, some basic stuff like maybe inventory, on a mobile phone? Sure, I play pretty advanced games on my Samsung, but it's all preloaded stuff. And SL is as far from a preloaded game as you can get, things in-world can change any time. These days you get pretty good gaming laptops, but a gaming desktop is pretty much the accepted go-to gold standard. Agree with your general post, though
  19. Thanks for the info. Will keep that in mind as I participate at arms length.
  20. Mastodon, (genus Mammut), any of several extinct elephantine mammals (family Mammutidae, genus Mammut ) that first appeared in the early Miocene (23 million to 2.6 million years ago) and continued in various forms through the Pleistocene Epoch (from 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago). Wiki. Like Juggernaut in other modern speech. Grow up from the boob jokes. I'll give it a fair shot. Not that I'm convinced in any shape or form, but simultaneously like the decentralized stuff and give it a future, and at the same time it gives me (also extinct) IRC vibes.
  21. Dunno. Joined, keeping a low profile there, followed Coffee, what's the worst thing that can happen...
  22. Like I said, it's sorta a time machine. Like the 90's telling 2022 "told ya so"
  23. So you actually care enough about not leaving Twitter to care about leaving Twitter. Meta obtained.
  24. Not really. Just something that might get more traffic here or may not make any difference at all
  25. This Mastodon stuff is actually interesting. It's like a throw-back in time from the 2000s and even the 90's, just with obviously more modern tech. Lost interest in Twitter aeons ago, obviously have FB to keep in touch with famlily, used it quite a lot over the years for work for relevant (closed) groups, and it's been pretty darned useful in that respect. (Changed the m to an r. Makes a lot of difference apparently) LL mods, please don't close this thread unless it goes obviously out of line. Show some patience, it might go some place interesting
