It will be a proof of concept project to figure out if the SL platform can provide a more immersive end users experience. Some of the content that is being delivered via traditional HTML right now will be evaluated in SL. Anybody available to help? After posting it here..I wonder if you should run this concept past LL developers first?

However, it was still possible if you signed up through one of the Non Profit's portals (Primarily Educational Institutions) that for several months you could still get a last name. It appears from SL Name Watch (pops), that this finally ended on April 17, 2011. I have a friend with a birth date of March 29, 2011. *takes my hard work...rips it up into pieces and throws it in the air* Well...that was a waste of time....:matte-motes-sunglasses-3:

I checked all the rez dates for my friends..comparing the ones that have true last names and the ones that are "Residents". I have a friend with a true last name with a date of November 10, 2010 and a friend with a "Resident" last name in December 13, 2010. So apparently some time end of November/Early December, LL got rid of all their last names. That's for anyone who really cares....if you don't, I apologize for wasting your time. :matte-motes-sunglasses-3: Thanks PS..sorry..was REALLY bored at work one day....

  5. Dillon Levenque wrote: Bobby, you will get a lot of responses like the ones before mine, and small wonder. That's not to say you won't get a few positive responses. There are some people who will be willing to work with you—I don't happen to be one of them (although I've participitated in a few surveys here)—but I imagine there will be some. I won't participate because number one I have nothing at all to even speculate about, let alone discuss, on the subject of 'online cultural scenes and their place in institutional surroundings', but even more than that, I won't participate because you should already know some answers!. You're almost into your fourth year in SL. You belong to a number of groups, and they include at least a reasonable variety of interests. Presumably you already know what you mean by 'institutional surroundings', given that's the topic of the paper you've taken as your assignment. You must have met a great number of people in your almost four years here. Ask some of them, or better yet, go through your IM logs and see what convos you can find that might be relevant. Think for yourself! Asking strangers like this strikes me as almost unforgivably lazy work. I'm with you. I was actually just thinking that we haven't heard from students in a while. Guess the time is coming again. Good luck with your paper..but I can't or won't (your choice) help.
  6. Butterpecanxx wrote: looking to make new friends Welcome to SL. My first suggestion would be to go to the search function and type in your interests..music, dancing..whatever it might be. You should find a whole listing of groups, filled with people who have the same interests. Join the group, send out a group message...you never know who you might meet or what might happen. Good Luck..and welcome to our world
  7. hey there... If you haven't done so already, I would suggest putting your interests into the search and see what groups are out there for you. I'm sure you can find people with similar interests out there. Good luck
  8. Hello peoples... I am not sure if this is going to stay here, but wasn't sure where else to put it as it's not an SL technology issue... Firestorm has made a bit of an issue on their site regarding their internal codes and LL's new release and the SSB code and how everything is going to get all wonky (my term..not firestorms...) I'm not a techie by any stretch of the imagination, so could one of your gurus be kind enough to explain what's going on, what's going to happen and what, if anything, I need to do about it? Should I stop using Firestorm and try a different viewer? Is it necessary to use SL's viewer (which I'm not really a fan of)? HELP!! Thanks....

The little orange circle, in this specific case, probably means someone either commented or loved one of your posts or snapshots. Once you click on this person's comment, the orange thingy will disappear. If it was a message, it would appear in the "messages" tab. :smileyhappy: The orange circle says 1, but it also states that I have a message, not a notification. Although no messages exist. Wish I could take a picture and show you what I'm talking about.
  12. DarkAusten wrote: I can't believe that I have just seen a sim called 'Rape City' promoted on the main login page of SL. You have to be friggin' kidding me!! ************************************************************************************************************************************ THIS, I believe, is the main problem the OP is talking about. We can all agree that rape in RL is a terrible thing and that it does happen in SL (although, it's usually, if not always, a mutual RP), but it doesn't need to be shown on the main login page. If it was buried in a search or somewhere in the events, those people who are specifically looking for it can find it. I do agree with that.
  13. Good day everyone... Wasn't sure where to post this, so I thought I'd start here. I have started using the My Second Life page must more recently and ran into a problem. I use the system to message people when I'm not on line. I had a new message in my inbox and wound up accidently deleting the old messages as the new one was coming in. So, the inbox states that I have a new message, but I can't get to it. Does anyone know of a way to get rid of that or may reinstate old messages so I can see what this one was. I know it wasn't anything important, but the little orange circle showing me I have a mesage is getting on my nerves. :matte-motes-sunglasses-3: Thanks....
  14. HOLY MOLEY!! Never once did I think there would be religious services in SL. Does anyone know if it's just Christian or are there places of worship for other faiths as well??
  15. Thank you for that piece of information. When I joined, you got to choose your first name but had to pick from a list of last names. I didn't even know that wasn't an option anymore. I assumed that a "Resident" was a premium member and that people who had last names were free members. Good to know...sad that they don't allow you to do that anymore. At least the display name function is available.
  16. Knowl Paine wrote: Students do not define the curriculum. If a Student falls in the forest, and then wakes up; will he or she naturally collect social data, for a private administrative body? I don't like surveys about BS. Well stated. I can't argue with what you're saying. (in fact, I find it very humerous). My point is this (which I did say in a different post... ) I think, in future, if an OP said "Hi..I've been in SL for about 6 months now working on a research paper and I would like...blah blah blah" then maybe we all (or maybe just me) wouldn't get all bent out of shape with these questions.. Do some work. Go into SL..see what it's all about. That's all I'm saying.
  17. binweasel wrote: Tex, As previously stated in the conversation that followed OP, I have been inworld for the past week and I have interacted with other SLer's. Thanks for your time you took to post. Please forgive me...I flew off the handle and that was completely uncalled for. I guess I'm a bit tired, as are a lot of us, at people coming in asking questions that we feel they should be able to find out themselves. I think, in future, if an OP said "Hi..I've been in SL for about 6 months now working on a research paper and I would like...blah blah blah" then maybe we all (or maybe just me) wouldn't get all bent out of shape with these questions. Again, please accept my sincere apologies for my horrible behavior and good luck with whatever you're doing.
  18. Knowl Paine wrote: Again, this isn't about the OP. Stop making it about a person. The Colleges and Universities are the driving force. I could list all the past surveys, showing what they want, but you'll just ignore it. They want to control people, regulate Second Life, moderate Second Life, legislate over Second Life, Tax Second Life... When all the Newspapers and TV stations were in SL; what do you think they really wanted? Honest investigative journalism, or, sensationalism? I respectfully disagree...the original post asked: "was just wondering if people on the forum are open to researchers like me coming here and asking questions and enegaing in discussion? I'm not talking about a spamming the board with lots of posts, but maybe just using this one to ask a few questions about your experiences. Please let me know if this would be OK" It is not the fault of the colleges and universities...the OP asked the question...we are answering the question. End of discussion!!

I'm sorry..that was mean of me....but the answer is still NO!
  20. Here's a thought, dude.... Go in world..stay there for a week...no outside interaction. Then make your own F***NG decision. Stop bothering us!!
  21. hey there...welcome to SL One of the best ways I've found to meet people is through the search function. go in and put in a catagory that you like..music, movies, dancing..things like that. Then when you find a group, join it. See who's on. Then send a group message out. You should get a few responders..talk to them..see what they have to say. You could, if it's a club or something, send an IM to the moderator. I've done this a few times in a few different groups. It's usually been pretty successful. Good luck.
  22. Welcome to SL My first suggestion is to go into the SL search and looks for groups that spark your interest. There's lots of stuff out there for people with lots of different tastes. When you find something you like, join it. Then, if you're feeling brave, send out a group IM and see who responds. It's a great way to meet people and find new places to hang out. Good luck!!

Its usually the ones a bit long in hair and a tad like Ron Jeremy looks these days as he gets up in years. :matte-motes-shocked: with all due respect, Pussycat, I think San Fran is the SL of the RL world....:matte-motes-sunglasses-2:
  24. jackmawer wrote: To be honest, the only reason i ask about this is because of the following post from the archives: "There used to be free apartments for new users. Are there still any around? There did used to be free apartments around...I had two different ones, actually..but the problem was two fold. First, as one of the other posters mentioned, you would have to get there first come first serve and then reapply. Also, many landowners found that these weren't profitable (obviously) and made them into something else. I doubt there are any free places available in world anymore, let alone any that you can actually put a lot of prims in. I agree with the idea of a friend helping you out...that's how I got my place. Good luck
