  1. I think for a platform as versatile as SL, the promotional videos they made are a bit lacking and bland, and they don't do the platform justice at all in showing what it's capable of. I'm talking about the promotional videos here, not the videos targeted to SL's existing users, but to possible new residents or players. I mean, to me personally, and I do think this also applies to more people out there - the literally unlimited customizations you can do to your avatar/character alone is a HUGE selling point, and then there's the fact that you can use 3rd party 3d modelling tools to create anything you want, and upload it inworld (given you passed the mesh upload permission test, which is easy anyway) then use them however you want, and with the addition of scripting, you can literally create and do anything you can imagine. But none of them are explicitly mentioned in SL's promotional videos. Why? I've been on SL for 3 years, not that long really, compared to other long-time residents, but it sure gave me an idea of what SL is technically capable of as a platform. Yet if I were to put myself in the shoes of people who have little clue of what SL is, and then watch the promotional videos from their perspective, I'd say "Oh, okay" - at best. To be fair though, sure there is a lot of people out there who might be interested to SL for it being a "Virtual world where you can be anything and do everything you want" But "be anything and do everything" is very ambigous and non-technical. There are many video games out there using that phrase, "be anything you want" yet their level of character customization is very, very limited. Or, "do everything you want" but "everything" is limited by the fact that the players are stuck with what the game has to offer in the first place. So because of these widely-used phrases, skeptical prospects most likely won't buy those kinda implications, they want technical and factual details to support those kinda statements or implications. And in SL you can literally be anything and do everything. So why don't the promotional videos pointed those points out explicitly? Here's one for example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LC-HO0ljN0 see how boring and stereotype-inducing that is? At least for me. I'm sure LL has more than enough resource to do it. Hire some suspense cinematic trailer producer or writer or something, then make them work with someone who knows well how to make machinimas in SL and has the technical knowledge to make it work. Then spend some money for a marketing campaign, cater to a broader audience, show the world what SL is truely capable of, break the popular stereotypes. I know there are videos showing what I said should be mentioned, I've watched them in the past, but they are separate videos and not included in the promotional videos themselves. Which means it most likely won't reach people who's not a resident in the first place. Imagine a very well-made, cinematic suspense trailer for SL, which explicitly shows what the platform is technically capable of, using inworld rendering engine and not a third party CGI of course. "Literally unlimited character customization", "Seamlessly show who you are and show your creations to everyone", "Can't find what you're looking for in our so-big-we-can't-measure-it marketplace and inworld stores? Use our inworld object creation tools or upload your own 3d models inworld", "Inworld scripting made everything possible, create whatever you want", jesus, if I've never heard of SL before, and watched that kinda promotional video, my jaw would drop. What do you guys think?
  2. Try newbie welcome zones such as NCI Kuula, or builder-oriented zones such as Builder's Brewery. If you fancy dance hall with lots of people, try Frank's Jazz there are many more place with a lot of people, you'll most likely find them yourself after you put more time on SL.

  5. Well guys, I read that using hardware skinning would put the loads off my CPU and put it on my GPU instead, and I do get a lot of frame rate improvement with it turned on. But the problem is, I actually notice that my CPU temperature sometimes get a bit higher with hardware skinning turned on, my GPU temperature also got higher, but I guess it's normal for the GPU temperature to rise since it supposed to transfer the load from my CPU to my GPU, right? But why the CPU temperature also got higher? So, should I use it or not?

Collecting and displaying old things would be difficult as some are very prim heavy and you'd need lots of land to display them, so most would have to be kept it in inventory. Most of the collections I've seen involve artwork made by artists that sold their original art, or items you wear. I collected jewelry made by Random Calliope, mostly his limited editions and know many others did at the time. He is no longer in SL and has been gone for years, but he made jewelry from regular prims before there were sculpts or mesh and his work was amazing. He didn't use any textures in his creations but they were spectacular none the less. He was a true artist and master of jewelry making. Many times he'd make things to give away for free or for some of SL's first hunts, or to benefit various charities. I still wear the jewelry he made that I own and always get compliments on it. You can google him to see pictures of some of his creations. But what if some of those old prim heavy things might worth thousands of lindens? :smileyvery-happy:
  7. Are there any? I was wondering about this when I saw a transferable no-copy covered-painting was on sale at a yard sale yesterday. Like, are there people who hunt for these kind of items that was made many years ago as collections? It would be interesting to imagine someone on SL who has a mini-museum in their SL house which is packed with no-copy transferable items from many years back :matte-motes-big-grin:

Hello guys, it's me again with my kinda noobish questions (sorry!) :matte-motes-big-grin: So, I managed to put a motorcycle-seat animation in the script, but I haven't been able to make the vehicle turns faster. Anyone knows how to achieve that?   19. So guys.. I uploaded a mesh hoverbike which I made from scratch and tried to put this script > http://www.free-lsl-scripts.com/lib/Helicopter/Helicopter/Object/Helicopter_1.lsl in it. But it keeps on thinking the backside of the hoverbike is the frontside :( can anyone experienced with script help me with this issue? I have already searched for the solution but none worked so far. Thanks! Edit: Fixed it by rotating the hoverbike while in Blender.
  20. It's whatever someone wants it to be for them it's different for every person, though there are some consensus. To me, it's a virtual world, or a game, where you can do almost anything in it. Some people seems to got edgy when I said Second Life is a Virtual World or a game to me because they think I don't have any respect to other people on SL and their feelings by saying it's a game, which is not true at all, I respect other people anywhere I could, even in video games.
