In my country, there's a general store that decided to untag their toys for girls and boys. They decided that now they're selling toys for kids, no gender anymore (related here : http://culturalinsight.com/2013/12/04/unisex-toys/). But it's still a long road before it becomes "the new norm". VR can not miraculously change human minds. Humans remain humans with or without avatars. Therefore I don't see how it would become "common" in VR if it's not there in RL beforehand.
