This year will be my 17th anniversary in SL (although with a long break in between).

Just recently I discovered the fun in creating things for SL. I started playing around with Prims in world and now I'm on the path of learning blender. I started 3 months ago and building things in Blender kind of became like a creative outlet for me in my down time.

I have a vision of what I want to build but it is a lot: a lot to learn and a lot to build.

I'd love to find some people I can talk to about my challenges and when I'm proud of what I created. All my friends in SL aren't really interested in building stuff on their own so I'm worried I'm bothering them to much with my "boring" blender problems or when I'm starring on some texture in a club for hours because I wanna find out how it is made 😁

I tried hanging around at the Builder's Brewery but haven't had any luck in meeting someone like-minded.

So if there are common hang out places for people who like to create in/for SL please point me in the right direction.

Or if anyone is in the same position as me, don't hesitate to contact me here or in world

I don't know of any hang out places for builders but you should really join the classes at Builder's Brewery and also at Happy Hippsters. Not only are they great for learning building skills but also to meet other builders.

I agree with everyone about BB, it's an awesome resource, even if most of the people in the sandboxes are too busy to really talk most of the time. There's classes and lots of free stuff to use for building, and just being in their group helps.

I hardly get to hang out inworld as much as I'd like to, but I do have a reputation for being very open and generous in sharing what I have and know that is useful. I've even walked a person through making an animation via IM chat. If you ever see me inworld feel free to say hi and ask me stuff.

Blender only seems daunting if you don't get that it's all just a bunch of baby steps. Go through each baby step, hit obstacles, look them up and learn how to overcome them, and they become baby steps, too. After a while you'll be running, and obstacles will be less frequent (and thus more noticable, OW!), and you can work on refining technique.

Anyway yeah, ever need advice, feel free to drop me a notecard or something. Sooner or later I'll get back to you, and help any way I can.

I do wish I knew more people who liked just standing around and building together. It's one of the most special things about SL that you just don't get anywhere else, really.

Builder's Brewery is great. I've not been to many classes or the sim, but the group chat is a great learning space as people are always asking questions and getting answers and advice. I've solved a few questions I had there myself. Also, the mesh and texturing sub-forums on these forums are great for that too.

I've been building on and off ever since I started in SL back in 2006. And I have to say I miss the early days where all you could do was build in world with prims because back then building WAS a social activity in and of itself. You'd hang out on someone's build platform, chat and torture prims...for hours. Friends would come and go. It was awesome. When mesh came along I stopped building entirely as I was just not interested in spending hours off in some 3D program. I was not in SL much for a few years, but now that I've been back pretty regularly I dove into Blender and once you "grok" the basic workflow, it gets much easier. I love what mesh can do, but I still miss hanging out and building in world.

A table I made in Blender and textured in Substance:

I've stopped using Substance and am learning texturing in Blender. This is my first attempt at food (specific use case for my sim lol)...next step is to bake normals into it with a high poly model and slap that on a low poly version with some shadowing. Learning that today (hopefully lol):

While BB is a good suggestion, and certainly a good way to get started, I don’t think that’s what she means.

I think she’s asking more for a group or someplace where she can go to just BS, chat and share mesh she’s working on with likeminded individuals.

I'm not aware of any place like that inworld, but it sounds like an awesome idea! The weird shower thought I had about this was to use the test grid like a sandbox and have meetups once a week or something.

Actually I had some nice conversations in the beta grid. But most people are just AFK and working in blender next to it.

So I think the main grid would be better suited for a meetup. And yes, talking bull***** and discussing blender problems sounds awesome.

I'm following the BB group chat and while it is interesting what people are discussing from time to time it doesn't seem like the best place to socialise.

Thanks for all the answers so far. Some people already IMed me in world and it was really interesting to talk to them. So feel free to contact me if you feel the same way.

Maybe there's even enough demand to create a space where builders can just hang around and meet like minded people or plan projects. I would have thought that something like this already exists. I mean there's SIMs for basically every niche interest or kink 😅

Right, the reason I was suggesting the beta grid is for the free uploads and the meetup time because you would be designating a time and place to do all of that.

It’s a little different than just logging in to the beta grid and starting a conversation with someone there already. It was just a suggestion.

I’m thinking you might have to start up something like this yourself though. I really think it’s a good idea to have something like this going on.

Yeah it would make it easier to use the beta grid for mesh uploads... but you could also share screenshots of work in progress etc, so it's not strictly necessary. Let us know if a place like this materializes, I would drop by 🙂

Well even the four sandboxes available to premium members are empty 99% of the time, which boggles me because each one is four empty sims.

I think some sort of new group in SL specifically for social building would be a lovely idea, and find a sandbox available to everyone. There are plenty of them out there.

Are there not any builder discord groups? Builder's Brewery is ok, but the group has a massive slant towards scripting. Fiesti Studios discord does a bit of blender stuff and is quite fun at times,
