Well then, you have a comparison, and presumably a metric, from which to formulate a "goal"! That's a starting point.

A lot better than merely complaining!

See what I did there?

So now lemme explain why I just said that, just to keep things productive. Um, yesterday on Twitch, I saw someone with half of SL's entire population watching him sleep on cam. I'm not even joking. I peeked - he's literally just zzzzzzzzz.

26,000+ whole people found that engaging - and I saw him online in that category for hours and the numbers barely changed. As a social platform, how do you even compete with that, LOL!

Silliness aside, yeah, we've got double that number in-world on a good day, but we can't all gather in one space and communicate. Group chat would fry. But this is absolutely possible elsewhere - if not commonplace, and people gather every day to do it. To be fair, 26k is a rookie number for a popular streamer on Twitch (I think he normally hits 50-60k or so), but for a sleep stream, that's ridiculous. But yeah, some streams have six figures during big events - like award shows or competitive e-sports.

And I know you're thinking - how the heck do you keep up with a chat moving that quickly? It's not as hard as you'd think. Admins can turn on Slow Mode to slow it down (restricts a user to 15 or so seconds between posts - I think the timer can be customized), chat pauses when you scroll back, and there is a user @ system, which was mentioned here somewhere in some other thread (or this thread - I'm losing track).

No, the destination guide is a BADLY CURATED list of SOME suggested destinations, what it is not, is a "yellow pages of places in SL" which is what bench was referring to with "yellowbook" and "big book of".

I did some work for a LgBT+ club in SL, and the topic came up of how to promote the place, so I checked the wiki on "destination guide submissions", and found that at that time the official policy was

"We are no longer accepting submissions for A rated venues, and these are NOT shown in the in-viewer version of the guide"

There seems to be no sense in what makes it into the destination guide and what doesn't,  it's biased, and reeks of patronage and favour.

It may be helpful for some users to have the current destination guide's filtered suggested, mostly redundant, content (I do use it from time to time to quickly find a help location for new people to go to for resources), but i'm the type of person whom would have found a destination guide more like a directory most helpful when searching for specific things that peaked my interested when I started. I would have found education sooner, I would have found mesh resources sooner; maybe I would have had a happier more productive life.

My question is why are most new users I help with access to the current destination guide with help resources unable to find the destinations I provide to them over and over again?

Often objections sound like "the viewer already has 1000s of buttons" "the viewer is already confusing enough".

The entire world continues to fail because a few see this as a threat to their livelihoods and they will do anything to keep control of destination resource flow. Is there a conspiracy to keep all registered destinations from easily being found by all users? Seems like there is, if so why? Greed is my best guess. Some people think withholding knowledge gives them power. Financial and intellectual greed.

It can't be because it's too difficult or will break things, or will it "break things" if so what are the things that will be broke specifically?

Lol...no seriously, Love. We're sitting here brainstorming how to give people enough activities to do to want to log in - apparently that's not even a requirement! They're good just sitting in a chat watching people sleep! 😂

As funny as that is though, more seriously - People who are social online are now very, very used to gathering in ridiculously large numbers, so maybe that gives SL something to work on. Getting a more up-to-date chat system in place with a good UI and the usual features big online spaces are using might be all we need. Who knows.

I take your previous suggestion to be:

Give users a way to watch other users on their webcams.

Valid!

NO!

Pay attention. THERE IS NO OFFICIAL LIST OF "REGISTERED DESTINATIONS"!

Anyone who owns a parcel can decide for them selves if they want to add their parcel to the searchable list, or remove it from that list, at ANY time.

Even places that are searchable, there is no guarantee that the parcel name or brief description will be in any way, meaningful to outsiders.

A FAKE example:

Name: Bad Bill's

Desc: CMNF

Now the name and the description tell you NOTHING about the place, unless you HAPPEN to know what CMNF stands for, most noobs probably won't. They are not "being prevented from finding it" by a "conspiracy of greed". They are prevented from finding the place because the search engines suck, and they are too noob & too much "outsiders" to know what to search for yet, or HOW to search for it using the bloody awful search tools.

Rather than all the tin foil hat conspiracy bunker wrong assumptions that you fill your posts with, a better option would be to simply FIX THE DAMN SEARCH ENGINE.

Yeah, I re-read you post.  It's on page 4.  It's a good post, but needs a JIRA or the Lindens will not hear any of it, Ayashe, or so the legend says.  And how true  of what you wrote how SL is not build-friendly anymore, but then became a place to take pictures of other people's stuff.  Let's face the fact too that part of SL has corporate builders and those who are much more educated.

SL needs a new "Gacha" too because Gacha was so much more affordable for those wanting to have props for pictures *IF* one bought their gachas on the second-hand, resale market - those resale gachas were super cheap.  But, one thing Gacha did do was get a lot of people interested in mesh - those who were afraid of mesh because the thinking for a long time was that mesh was too much lag which is partly true as SL was not actually built for mesh.

Nah, I'm taking back everything I said about building. 😂 Streamline the avatar customization process and call it a day. Update chat - that's the way to go.

As far as gachas, they still exist - well, in their new non-gambling form. I still buy them when I need something out of the ordinary.

Yeah, I still buy resale gachas but left the groups entirely which were much fun and very active.  I felt time to move on from Gacha groups and activities.

They can probably chat with each other nowadays..

There are at least two SL farming/gardening systems which work like that.

Amusing thought: grass that you have to mow. Then SL could have Lawnmower Simulator (yes, there is such a game.)

That would be an amusing feature for an residential estate. You have to log in and mow your lawn regularly, or the grass grows high and unkempt. The grass belongs to the estate, not the tenant, so you can't delete it. The Homeowner's Association assesses fees and can vote you off the island if you don't mow. Or you can pay someone to mow your lawn.

Ummmmm...bots bots. I mean there are the usual standard chat bots, but nah I don't think streamers are piling bots into their channels. At least, not the ones I view. I'm in their Discord servers as well, and have had numerous convos with the same people in both places. I'd be shook LOL.

Oh wait there is one channel that loads up with bots, but it's pretty common knowledge that they do it.

That must have been quite some time ago.  I was able to get an adult destination into the guide with no oroblem.  Current knowledge base info...

Adult-rated areas

Second Life’s Destination Guide aims to include a wide variety of communities and venues, including those in regions with Adult ratings. However, as a globally available service, Second Life is subject to many regional restrictions that prohibit advertising or promotion for some types of content and services, such as escorts and explicit content, including nudity.

Because content listed in the Destination Guide can be seen by users of all ages and in all territories, no descriptions — regardless of rating — should contain explicit or overtly sexual language or imagery.

Adult content is list in the viewer web search at the very bottom of the catagories.

It reminds me of the "cooking" / "spells" stuff. Ok, not sure I ever saw "cooking" in SL, but definitely saw "spells" where you had to mix different items / ingredients to achieve a result.

You'd think that, but no seriously - this is a thing. There are tags and categories for it. It's less about what's happening on-screen, though. People just gather and chat even when there's nothing to entertain them on there. Lots of donations came through with TTS messages enabled, for example. I mean...watching a sleep stream is one thing, but donating money to one? 😳

Offline chat is another gathering spot - streamer's not even live but the chat is active. Happens in a few different places. The conversations are real - I've engaged in a few.

Honestly, people just love to talk. That's really all a platform needs - a place to gather in large groups and yap your face off.

I didn't say "web search" I said specifically "Destination Guide" as in the floater that opens when you click the destination guide button on the tool bar, don't shift the goal posts.

And it was about 2 yrs ago.

Great, now we have to figure out how they're going to yap without a face. Nightmare fuel!

I personally would prefer to talk to those with faces. No judgement on those born without faces, or those who lost their faces in a terrible accident (see "One" by Metallica).

Ya, I can kind of see it happening now for like a room where people are used to coming to chat.. It sure happens a lot in product groups in SL.. Rather than announcements or someone needing help is product groups.. now it's groupies just popping the groups to say hi and hang out..

I had to kick off a lot of my group chats because of groups popping up with people just saying hi or doing any other random unrelated to the group things..

So ya,I guess a hangout is a hangout hehehehe
