Even better IMO if you're running Linux. On my GTX 1050 laptop, I get about 5-10 fps more on average than I do in Windows 11. (I typically run on Mid settings with shadows on.) But don't worry, I think the performance is good in Windows too. :)

Just walked through some crowded sims and yes, upgrade FS soon!

GTX1050 60FPS even at busy sims on win10 and apart from now having the right drivers I reckon my Targus cooling pad helps most especially as i only have one internal fan working .

I should add that firestorm auto set my graphics to run halfway between high and ultra .

Why do residents have to resort to asking each other questions like this? I can visualize a tool on the web site that could scan a PC and tell what upgrade(s) would help and an indication of how much. Surely, people who understand how viewers work could design such a tool. Is this too much to expect?

I just reviewed the information that is on the web site at https://secondlife.com/system-requirements. To my non-techie eyes, it appears to be out-of-date. Worse, it has too much technical jargon and assumes a degree of technical knowledge that many, if not most, residents and prospective residents don't have. It could be a lot more useful if CPUs, for example, were listed in groups like "Not Recommended," "Adequate," "Recommended," and "Superior," and were listed within the groups in order or desirability. It could even start by offering some choices about desired performance and change the recommendations accordingly, so that people could choose lower performance when budgets dictated and still get useful information.

see that would be great and i have minima understanding of actual specs so thats why i asked here

Firestorm configures settings to match your spec , I can't remember the exact message i got when logging in but

"you have changed to nvidia2 and your settings have been adjusted accordingly"

There are loads of optimizing tools online to make the best of what you've got but that doesn't help when looking for a new computer because you can't test what you haven't got .

For people who don't understand specs a computer is just a glorified calculator , those who can afford to will just randomly choose a "gaming" laptop and hope for the best .

If those in the know want to help then they should promote every 6 months a bargain basement laptop and desktop that will likely only just meet SL requirements and note that anything better than these would be preferred . This gives the reader a benchmark to work with and we don't need any computer smarts to work out 16 is better than 8 or gtx 10 is better than gtx9 .

I read this

https://secondlife.com/system-requirements?_gl=1*t2uc9j*_ga*MTY5MzMyMjEwNS4xNjYzMzEzMDcx*_ga_T7G7P6DCEC*MTY2MzMxMzA3MC4xLjEuMTY2MzMxMzI3OC42MC4wLjA.*_fplc*UlJIYmFvMDh5aml2S1hibFdUNzFhQ09TOWNsYVRzakEwa01YaWt4RE9pUTRGMjRKcjBJRndxUUhjYTExQ2MlMkZBJTJGZ0hxWVhKUVFoSENFclVpb0FWJTJGWmREYWtvOEF6N2ZRbUclMkJmdk9GJTJCZHY4b0NNTlhsdUY0d0pjSzN4TWNvQSUzRCUzRA..

4 years ago and my eyes glazed over but ultimately because of it ended up spending 3 times more than I have ever paid before on a laptop just for SL and i'm quite sure i didn't need to .

It just so happened that when i discovered SL i was using my circa 20 year old toughbook spare laptop which then and now does everything i need from a computer , but of course it couldn't cope with SL leading me to believe i needed something high spec and fancy .

I also would add that before looking at your hardware to improve SL you need to look at your computer enviroment first. Look to see what processes start when you first boot, maybe there are a number of them that don't need to start on boot up. look for apps running in the back ground. Look for apps that have auto updates, and even if windows has auto updates running. Alot of that stuff can eat up alot of resources and slow down SL when it is running. Also check how clean it is inside the computer. a dirty inside can create cooling issues and that will slow things down. Also need to check the power plan windows is set to on the computer

The machine I am using is rather old, but it was a high-end office desktop. It needed a gaming-quality GPU card to handle Second Life.

When I look at the numbers for currently-produced computers, what I do see is greatly-reduced power consumption for the same amount of work done. If you're not using the absolute latest kit, it may not matter, but it was hot enough this last summer that it might. If you're not into the specialised solutions, cooling or otherwise, that's OK. Second Life doesn't force you into bragging-rights territory.

The only hardware ID in this thread I have recognised is "GTX1050" which is an nVidia GPU. I am not sure their numbering system is the same as it was, but that's basic gaming quality.

Yeah, that's probably why LL doesn't have a web site to detect your hardware and recommend upgrades. They'll put stuff in the database then never update it or make up hardware that doesn't exist.
