  1. I've been doing a bit of shopping recently, hadn't done hardly any over the past 2 or 3 years. After buying something recently I think I've come to the conclusion that I prefer prim to mesh clothing. When I'm in a store I usually find that the product images for mesh clothing are really fantastic. Many of them are really beautifully done, and I admire the time and skill that has gone into making them, and also the time and effort that's been put into making mesh clothes. But I feel that many stores are getting a bit too like real life - that is, what you see does not live up to what you actually get. Just like in RL where we are wood with beautiful images in magazines, it's just an illusion and when you put on the things for real you never look like the beautiful models in the photos. Well I'm seeing the same thing with mesh and it's kind of dissapointing. But I've not found that to be so true with prim clothing. For a start prim clothing seems to fit better - no alphas needed (which sometimes conflict with other items worn like making your feet invisible when wearing an alpha for a skirt...). Unfortunately I don't think there are that many clothes shops selling prim clothing anymore in SL:) Will have to do a bit of looking into that - I hope I'm wrong! That's my mini rant over with... So what do you prefer and why - mesh or prim clothing?
  2. I agree with AnneMarie - it could have, should have, been handled much more diplomatically if they want people to dress a certain way (I have visited there but didn't come across anyone telling me how to dress). I do find it kind a funny that people get sooo upset in SL about atire.....I personally don't give a hoot if an avatar is dressed or naked!
  3. Poison your post made me laugh (in agreement) I was having a similar conversation the other week with a friend I've recently introduced to SL. I've been in and out of SL for years but hadn't been in much the past couple of years till recently and we both really noticed the way some of the skins (or should I say shapes?) look now , especially when viewing some of the SL shots over at the SL Flickr group, and some of the product images inworld. Many of the women's faces have a really vacuous, poutty-mouthed, somewhat depressed look compared to older skins and shapes...On the one hand some of those images are really beautifully done, but makes me wonder why women want to look so....vacant and poutty (lol unless they are all men playing them). But having said that, that is the beauty of SL....be who you want to be...I just find it a little sad that many women have tried so hard for so long to be accepted as more than an empty-headed, poutty-mouthed objects...and that look in SL doesn't really help that cause... [ducks for cover as I'm sure I'll get some upset responses to this.... ]
  4. As Ren Toxx says, some may be using the same mesh templates - I hadn't realised people sold the base mesh untextured in SL for commercial use till recently - an easy way to 'make' and sell clothing I guess. SL is no different to RL - in RL people copy illegally and some are not caught out, and people are in SL..so it's gonna happen there... I found this website recently - Slocca.org - an association promoting original content in SL, and they have a list vendors who are guaranteed 100% original in their creations. You could browse their shop directory and use the ones listed there to be sure you are not buying copies.
  5. Hi, I'm looking for a ticking sound in Second life to put in an object. I've tried a few sound stores but can't seem to find one. Does anyone know of any shops inworld that sell ticking clock sounds?
  6. Thanks very much Ohjiro! I tried cutting etc. on the prim and that worked a treat. Will check out that link too. Thanks.
  7. I want to make an object that a user can touch and when it does the object either a) dissapears or b) falls apart, and then after a set interval of time (minutes) reappears whole again , so that the effect can be repeated. I've searched online and inworld for a script that can do this, and also on the LSL script wiki but am not coming up with anything. Does anyone know of an appropriate script, or multiple scripts that I could combine?
  8. Hi, I've got rotation scripts but they all seem to rotate about the middle of any object I put it into. I want to make an hour hand from a prim, so need to have the point about which it rotates at one end (of course). Can anyone point me in the right direction please to where I can get such a script or how to modify the basic rotation script?
  9. Thanks for sharing your blog - I think the whole Occulus rift and SL thing is fascinating. I can't wait till OC is available to general consumers - I know you can get it as a developer, but I'm not one:( I'd love to try it though. I love the thought of more immersion in virtual worlds. The creativity and details of some builds that we see now is amazing - how much more so will it be with more immersion.....? I'm watching the development of this with interest, so will be interested to follow your adventures into this too:)
  10. Thanks so much Autumn! I never thought of looking at Parcel Details, I was just clicking About Land, like I do on my own parcels. Great to see I can restrict access after all:)
  11. I think I've answered my own question...I don't think you can, you can only set the doors on lock. I got confused because I left a tp into my house on my roof and someone used it and I couldn't work out how they got in lol.
  12. Is there a way to restrict access on the house we get as Premium members from LL? I know how to do it on my own land, but can't see how to do it in the Premium house. Can anyone advise me please?
  13. What I find somewhat amusing is how the majority (from my personal experience) of stores strive to replicate almost exactly items from RL - obviously it's what's in demand. I'm not deriding their designs - I've bought stuff myself, often items that I thought were fun or just beautiful. But few seem to really think outside of the box and use the freedom that SL gives - items in SL don't have the physical constraints that they do in SL so why not do something different? But then...I've always been a touch on the surreal side lol. I suppose in going from RL to SL people want a sense of the familiar. Sorry..didn't mean to go offtopic but the original post about originality brought it to mind. I didn't know about slocca - thanks for the link Theresa.
  14. Hi, I don't think my post title explains clearly what I mean.... I'm planning to start a RL business and am thinking that I might like to mirror it in SL - maybe not offer identical products but similar. All of this of course would be time consuming, so I'm wondering if anyone in SL offers their modelling/build skills to make items (not design, just make it up) whether mesh or prim, for a fee? Or is this not a done thing? I'm not looking for anyone now, just trying to guage what my options might be. Any advice/feedback would be appreciated.
  15. Thanks for the replies everyone. I seem to solved the problem! I installed the Phoenix Firestorm viewer onto my laptop and it works beautifully (so far) - I'm now seeing proper water ripples and reflections as I do on my PC! Superb!
  16. Yep, checked the environment settings were the same. Everything is the same on the laptop as on the PC except for those few greyed out settings in graphics I mentioned.
  17. Thanks for the suggetstion , I've tried setting it to Ultra, but the settings are still greyed out.
  18. Yeah, but my PC graphics card is a GeForce GT 610 and that works fine (on windows XP ! ) .... :matte-motes-confused:
  19. Thanks very much for the advice Ren and Dres. I was actually thinking of Firestorm:)
  20. I'm thinking of trying a third party viewer - if I don't like it is it easy enough to go back to the default SL viewer - can you have both installed at the same time and switch between the two when desired?
  21. I've noticed that there is a difference between the way water looks on my PC compared to my laptop. Even though my PC is older and has a less powerful graphics card, the water in SL is detailed, beautiful and sparkly (e.g . at places like Alirium). I've made a comparison of the graphics settings on the PC and laptop, and set the laptop to the same as the PC, and notice that on my laptop I can't enable Advanced lighting Model (or Ambient Occlusion or Depth of Field) and this is the one difference now between the settings. Also, Shadows and Water Reflections are greyed out (although set the same). I've also set the settings the same under Hardware, and checked the settings under World> Environment Editor match too. I've gone through a comparison of my video card settings for second life and matched them up where possible. There's still a difference and I'm a bit stumped as to why. Is anyone able to help with any suggestions please?
  22. I think it would be a great feature to be able to add text to objects and textures whilst inworld. Sometimes I want to create a quick sign or notice and it would be great to be able to upen up the Build window and as well as being able to apply a texture to a prim, be able to click another box which access a window where you can write text to be overlayed. It would save having to open up Photoshop, create new document, write the document, save it , upload it etc. Maybe a simple image editor inworld would also be useful. I wonder how difficult this would be to implement. Perhaps LL could look at this for SL V2?
