SL is still part of the real world.  If someone tries to take your DBA, then take them to court in the real world.

With new guest accounts, basically a temp disposable identity with zero information required from the user, that's suddently a lot harder. The best you can get from LL would be an IP address, so a griefer using a public access point can't be traced.

  2. The last few months have been very damaging for the most passionate, and it's not like theare going to play WOW or something, they are leaving to spearhead the 3rd party grids. Love them or hate them, the heavy users are the one who make and shape opinions, perhaps also why the last quarter has seen a dramatic raise in speculation as to the future of the Lab and this grid.

Yes, Beta about the release of Display Names, NOT Beta in regards to that Jira of "Bringing back the option to keep focus on the chat bar".

Please read or at least learn to.

This beta, like all others contains way more than the single headline feature. I suggest that instead of being a smart ass you learn to read the RELEASE NOTES that detail many new features (including event creation) and a whole mess of bug fixes. Everything needs to be looked at, everything needs to be evaluated and feedback is needed on everything - That's the point.

Wow! I thought this discussion was geared towards Display Names?

Why is it that when *anything* is broken, it's always LL's fault? Amazing.

Yet another unrelated complaint- case in point.

No actually. It's a very common problem with however LL manage there development set up that old bugs come back from the dead over and over and over - Viewer and Server side. So as this is beta, pointing out the zombies is called helping.

    3. That said, I've never been THAT mad against 2x proper, as I was against the TERRIBLE way it was dropped on us with two weeks notice, and the TERRIBLE way it was "user tested" only with new registrants and not experienced residents, including special purpose stakeholder groups such as builders, event producers, and event hosts

Viewer 2 was not tested on existing residents as we are not the people it was designed for, we were just expect to either gobble up the new shiny or leave. It's not a bad viewer for the first hour experience, it's the hours after that it starts to be a problem as zero thought was expended on how that would work. It's the child of the shallow corporate viewpoint that believed SL could be like a blue website you just pop on for 20 mins here and there, that view is still alive in the Lab.

Not right now really because FPS with 1.23.5 went up high for me since a month or so, all runs stable and i can do all the things i want to do quick easy and fast.

I find a generally smoother experience on Phoenix, it might just be HTTP Textures. In any case V2 seems ot get bogged down when there are a lot of downloads and my FPS drop from a comfortble 20-30 to 5-15 and very jumpy. Kinda have to just leave SL to do its thing and come back when its calmed down.

I have some gernal usability issues with V2 that make it very difficult for regular 'standing about chatting' , use of fonts, colour schemes and a host of minor tweaks that when combined aren't really so minor. Building is ok, inventory on the side bar is sunk - the side bar is actually to narrow(!!) but once you rip it off to a floater keyboard shortcuts (CTRL+I) dont work anymore. (If we could have resizable AND detachable, that would be epic). Parcel management, profiles, classifieds and the horrible search popup are all just to much and take me from  to

Which is a shame as there are some bits I really like.

It's great to read, that align planar faces feature was included to make life of builders easier. Still, I doubt that this is enough for most of the them, who have got used to temporary & local textures, build math expressions, building hotkeys, rez (and copy) on land group, etc. There are also many non-building related features, including the radar, built-in AO, breast physics, ignore group chat, and so on, that people expect nowadays...

Maybe mesh will be the push the TPV's need to switch the focus to viewer2, there has to be a point when it's simpler to rebase rather than to try and back port a moving target.

    Hairy Thor  says:

I'm disappointed that instead of fixing the antialiasing problem, it was just greyed out.

Yes, Sorry , but I really like .. dare I say .. need FSAA !

    Tarius Auxarmes  says:
Builders can more easily align textures across linked prims using planar mapping: This feature allows builders to align textures across faces so that several prims can look like a single prim. Simply select the faces of a set of linked prims, then open the Textures tab of the Build tool, make sure your Mapping setting is set to “Planar”, then click the checkbox labeled “Align planar faces.”

This right here. I dont use viewer 2 yet, but this feature makes me really think about it.

This feature exists in Phoenix and has for a while now.

Sidebar Panels can now be undocked and turned into regular floating windows: Simply click on a Sidebar Tab and drag it away from the Sidebar to undock it. You can also click the undock icon in the top right of a panel. To redock a sidebar panel, click the redock icon in the top right of the panel. Once sidebar panels are undocked, they behave like any other floating window in the Viewer.

    Undocked Inventory window. CTRL+I Fixed?

If you "preloaded" the nearest sim with the avatar's state when they are 4 seconds from crossing, then the simcross problem would be dramatically improved.

    How?

    No really.

How does a sim know when I am about to cross a border? when I get close? What happens if my land is on the border? what happens if I walk in circles on the edge of the sim? By AV state you mean AV script state .. so whats that bug where scripts being loaded kills the sim. Do scripts loose 4 seconds when you appear on the next sim?

It would be really great if the sim could notify me 4 seconds before one of my customers makes a purchase too.

It appears increasingly obvious that the only thing adhered to vehemently are the projects that residents have disapproved of resoundingly and that's not a good thing. Not good at all.

We never asked for a dashboard, we have asked for more groups forever.

The use of groups right now is limited by the lag inherent in the chat system, make group chat work and you might find that the use of groups will adapt to be more then just announcements.

  11. Finally ! Some news from LL thats actually positive and genuinely what users have been asking for. 40 groups and fixing chat. Forget the shiny, getting the nuts and bolts to work right is EXACTLY what the platform needs.

Thank you Linden Lab, this single blog post has done more to restore my personal confidence in the platform as provided by LL than ANYTHING else posted this year.

I have studied legal cases where this kinda thing happens..

As it has been previously stated, ignorance is no defense.

In court, it wont be portrayed as you remember it.. You clubbing, having a good time with friends and some teen hits on you.. (age not known to you). Court will portray it as though you went out, you hit on the teen, or the teen was chatting innocently and you near dragged them off kicking and screaming. (Which of course is impossible)

No judge/jury wants to be seen as being soft on a paedophile or predator, so you will do time.. hard time.

"You are an adult, you should have known", will be thrown at you, there is no answer to that. If the jury was filled with other sl'ers, then you stand a chance, for we know what it is like.. however, you know that the odds of that are next to nil. The court can provide thousands of SL vids from youtube, painting SL as nothing but a sex sim. Of course, the prosecution will not admit evidence that proves anything other, the court wont show this comment thread, it wont show anything that will lead to you being let off, and by the time the prosecution is done with the jury, they will think of you as the most vile society has to offer/ You don't stand a chance in court, none of us do.. and you can be 100% sure that the first case tried will not be lenient, it will set precedent, so no judge is going to let it slide.

Even if one charge fails, you have grooming a minor, dealing indecently with a minor, attempting to procure a minor, misusing a carriage service, attempting to procure a minor using a carriage service and the list goes on..

All because an avi that looks in their 20's was somewhere they shouldn't be, and for anyone that states this is nothing new because teens have always been on sl... the big difference is that we could "safely assume" that other users are 18+ because it is a legal requirement of sl to be 18+ (well, it was) They were breaking the rules to be on sl, which puts them in the wrong.. that defense fails if you knew.

    Exactly, and well put.

Want to help? help. If the support team does not believe that you sent the ticket to the right sub category, they just do not respond at all, they ignore you. Not that they say you have to send this problem to another sub category or there is nothing we can do for you, they just ignore you.

This is the same for abuse reports and live chat, if you don't frame what you want the exact way they want you to, you are just canned without a word. You really come away with the feeling they would be happy in their jobs if it wasn't for the customers.

  14. I really hope what this blog post is saying is "We're going to improve support" rather then "We're hacking support back to a website and some guy named Ontyne who only seems to be able to say 'knowledge base' and 'file a ticket'". The knowledge base is a circular mess and tickets can go ignored for weeks.

Support used to be really good.

    Support is now really bad.

  15. @Terrence Linden

This is starting to get very silly, any chance we can have some assurances on technical limitations to be imposed on teen accounts, invisible M+ land, object rating perhaps. putting a G grid on the moon - Really it doesn't matter what you guys have at this point as long as its not nothing ...

Oh .. and don't waste it here where it wont be seen, a nice big blog post, full of detail and assurances please.

"IP  protection of virtual goods is a nice thing, but isn´t it a bit off  track to prohibit someone to resell, replicate or copy an object he or  she paid for? After all this was a PURCHASE, not a steal.

You're kidding right? Where are you from? Some third world communist country?"

Listen, fool. When Getty sells me a picture DVD, which i use for producing a flyer, my clients will reproduce these pictures 10,000 times.

Do you call Getty a communist?

Ownership vs Licensing .. All virtual goods are licensed, that requires IP protection.

  17. The basics of the recent SL "merchant" economy is tier. The tier is HIGH, and ou need some server space for display and creation, renting satellite vendor space is expensive, everything is. So, as a merchant or content creator you are forced to cover your rental expenses FIRST, before you can think of profitability.  Only a few out of the many, many content creators in SL make enough money to call it "RL income", most cover their tier and advertisement expenses and reinvest a good share of their revenue into some kind of SL lifestyle, by purchasing other creator´s products. This is a very expensive business.

Tier is the least expensive part of running a business in SL. If you are just in business in SL to fund your SL, you are not in business. you have a hobby. The litmus test for a business is paying actual wages and once you start doing that you will find Tier is a drop in the ocean.

Are you trying to hasten the exodus to OpenSim?

It sure seems like it!  There was already an exodus last April primarily among SL merchants due to the direction it seemed like LL was headed in this community that was worrisome to merchants.

The above fall generally into three categories:

    1.  Merchants who are still in SL but have established "sister" businesses on another grid so if the economy/business plummets in SL, they are already known, established and operating elsewhere.

    2.  Merchants who sold the majority of their land (some owning many estates) and keep just a bare minimum of their business in SL while establishing and operating primarily from another grid.

    3.  Merchants who packed up shop altogether, sold all their land and are 100% in another grid

You are making a handful of merchants having a hissy fit into something that didn't actually happen.

Other grids are dead to merchants, no economy for the most part and opensim has zero protections for IP. We all looked at other opportunities and will continue to - we're merchants! However, we're all still here, trading away, miserable as sin about the new marketplace but still working hard. Sure some might do things on other platforms but right now everything else is secondary to what happens on this one.
