Most of the picks that were being used were not being counted in the system. The only picks that counted had Payment info used in the profile. All I know, is that all the top places to find what you were looking for, floated to the top of search. Picks made search relevant. Without them, there is nothing at all where the public has a say in what are the best spots. This is not what we want here. We need the masses to point people in the direction of the places that the most people like. Most picks that I've seen in people's profiles were set at completely random spots and then overwritten with some "useful" information in the lines of "this is bubblegumgirl92 shes my main squeeze mess with her and ill bleeping brutalize u and ur SL family", or "RP Limits: no use of thread cutters, orbital sanders or power drills above the belt line". I'm not sure how relevant that kind of information could possibly be to anybody.

My theory is that by making them rare then people will use them only for things they truly like. If they do choose to sell theirs to someone they will be able to sell it only once. Anyone wanting to pay for that "Advertising" will have to pay a very dear price. The bidding war alone could push the price way out of the reasonable range and put it into the "not bloody worth it anymore" realm. I'm afraid that this wouldn't change anything. Both land owners and hobos that are paid for picks would create an army of alts.
  3. I agree that search is bleeped up beyond repair, but removing picks was a wise decision imho. They have been gamed a lot since camping and traffic bots were forbidden.
  4. PPS: I don't want any kudos points You can award them to someone who has the nerve to ask for kudos despite having no helpful answer.
  5. You can override the settings of individual 3D applications in the catalyst control center. You can find this setting under "Graphics --> 3D --> All --> Smoothvision HD: Anisotropic Filtering". Make sure that the checkbox "Use Application Settings" is enabled. The same goes for anti-aliasing. PS: There really isn't much of a difference in both frame rate or visual quality if you enable anisotropic filtering in SL. In your case, the best way to improve your fps is probably to upgrade your RAM to 4 MB or more.
  6. You should probably flag the item listing on the Marketplace and pick "item not as advertised" as a reason. Other than that, you can only contact the seller and ask for a refund. Linden Lab refuse to get involved in disputes between residents. There is always the chance that the merchant made a mistake and accidentally confused two sales boxes. I'd send him an IM as well as a notecard, since IMs are often capped.
  7. You can either verify your age using the link on the "My Account" page on the Second Life website, or buy a small amount of L$ on the same page (or simply add your credit card number or Paypal address as payment information, if you are a US citizen). The latter is known as account verification, as opposed to age verification. Both types of verification give you access to the adult-rated part of the SL grid. There is only a handful of sim owners that restrict access to age-verified residents. For most adult sims, account verification is sufficient.
  8. SL is a very adult platform, so it doesn't come as a surprise that the G-rated part of the grid -- the new teen grid -- is not very popular. Many adult residents avoid it like the plague, which means that business owners are well advised to offer their goods and services in M or adult-rated areas.
  9. It appears that Linden Lab are unable to add this feature to the off-the-shelf shopping portal that has replaced the custom-made XStreet platform. They recommend that we filter the Marketplace notifications to our spam folders. We'll probably miss the automated emails that tell us that our listings have been automatically removed because some idiot flagged them for no good reason, but I guess no workaround is ever perfect. Which is a real bummer, since our SL experience has turned into a whole bunch of workarounds.
  10. Shockwave Yareach wrote: Boiled down, Mesh could be done today if everyone was running a V2 viewer. But since ... ...since Linden Lab don't listen to their customers and refuse to make the long overdue changes to the viewer 2 UI that the SL community has been demanding over and over again, and instead renders viewer 2 more and more unusable (can you say web profiles?), SL residents have no choice but to use third party viewers that currently don't support mesh and wouldn't even exist if LL had not open sourced the viewer code, thus allowing the SL community to take the client development out of LL's corporate hands.
  11. Keep filing ARs. I had a similar case once, but that person engaged in all kinds of griefing and was probably ARed by multiple people. After a while, her account vanished from search, despite her being a land owner. You should also contact your lawyer and have them prepare a letter that requests disclosure of the name and RL address of the person in question, in order to take legal action against this party on the grounds of libel. The letter should mention that this person has repeatedly been reported to Linden Lab. That might give them a sense of urgency. Plus, there is a good chance that you really get access to the RL information. You could send the idiot an official looking cease and desist letter or some other kind of wake-up call (think of cheap hired help with a fondness for baseball bats, which might be the only way of recourse if the subject lives in some lawless Eastern European swamp). Win-win.
  12. It is time that we, the residents, agree on a common SL client basis. I think it's pretty clear that this cannot be an official Linden viewer, since LL no longer take the needs and wishes of their customers into account. It has to be a viewer with an interface that works for everyone, without a side bar or web profiles or a basic mode, and of course without security holes such as html on a prim. Once we've made our choice, we need the developers of this viewer to work on a web-based search engine. Linden Lab will soon cut 1.2-based viewers off from search, and something needs to be done here because viewer 2 has been rendered completely unusable. I could imagine a solution where a modified v2 client queries LL's search 24/7 with a comprehensive list of keywords, and writes the results into a mySQL database that is hosted by a third party. This third party search engine could use own search algorithms and deliver much more sensible results, based on a more transparent search method that allows merchants to optimize their advertising accordingly. Needless to say that whoever hosts this 3rd party search could earn a fortune in classified ads. I'd be among the first to pay a fellow resident instead of LL. If LL block our viewer of choice from connecting to the grid, a new version needs to be released that uses a different viewer identifier. If 80% or more of all residents were to use this viewer, LL would have no choice but to ignore this TPVP violation. After all, they can hardly ban the majority of their customers. Bottom line, if LL are unwilling to give us a viewer and a search engine that works or us, someone else has to take over the client side development of SL. I don't see another option here.
  13. The next logical step would be web-based conversations. Instead of a small and efficient chat / IM window, starting a conversation will soon open a screen-filling window with a complete internet forum software. Of course there will be short delays when posting a reply. But to make up for that, you'll get a lot more functionality. You will have the option to simultaneously post your chat on Twitter, and the entire internet will be able to search your chat logs with Google. That makes about as much sense as web-based profiles, imho.

I can understand why people would want to relive or rather re-invent their highschool / college days, but since this school is located in a PG sim, I can't see the point either :smileyindifferent:
  16. ...spent 10 years working for SOE... focus on the networking, servers, and core technologies... worked on titles like EQ, EQII, SWG... respect. Looks like Mr. Humble is hiring the right kind of talent. Welcome to the madhouse
  17. That doesn't surprise me. New residents of all ages have access to mature regions by default, unless they're stupid enough to enter their real birthdate during account signup. A small signup fee would go a long way to weeding them out. It would also prevent the massive alt abuse that we can see on an everyday basis, in these forums for example. Which is also done by people with the mental capacity of teenagers, by the looks of it. At least they're not as dangerous as they are in the wild. If you tell a gang of 15-year-olds in RL that they're not supposed to be somewhere or do something, they might beat you up and leave you bleeding on the pavement. Like the German senior citizen who was brutally beat within an inch of his life by two juveniles after he asked them not to smoke in the subway. Homo sapiens of that age are vicious omnivorous predators who have not yet developed a functional human brain. That is one reason why adults don't want to be around them unless the ill-mannered brats are their own wayward offspring, and why the SL populace was understandably shocked when LL threatened to allow the little apes onto the adult grid.
  18. The problem is that disgruntled customers do make the effort to find out how to leave a negative review. All the reviews that I received since LL switched from XStreet to SLM read "I didn't get my item". Needless to say that I was never notified, neither by the customers nor by SLM. And after I made it up to these customers, they couldn't figure out how to change their review. That's just great, considering that these reviews are now no longer offset by positive ones. Not to mention that the delivery errors are LL's responsibility in the first place, not mine. They do a bleep poor job of informing customers of what to do when they don't receive their purchase. LL need to either make it simple to leave a rating / review and remind the customer of doing so, or completely do away with the much abused rating system imho. On top of that, we need email notifications when people post reviews. And LL needs to finally put an end to the bleeping sales notification spam. They've been reminded of this again and again, but I guess developing a new viewer that doesn't allow people to buy anything at all (how bleeping idiotic is that?) was more important.
  19. I haven't given a single rating or review on the new Marketplace, although I buy at least five items a week. Simply because I don't have any idea how to rate items there. Once SLM reminds me of it, Like SLX / XStreet did, I will start rating my purchases unless it's too much of an effort.
  20. Perhaps we should all grab a prim weapon and take the land back from the oppressive bourgeois upper class of sim owners. All power to the NPIoFs!
  21. I have to correct myself. The slider is called "package", and ranges from "coin purse" to "duffle bag". The Lindens do have humor.
  22. A small signup fee would already go a long way. It would also help to pay LL's bills, which are currently paid solely by land owners and premium account holders. They also need to start taking legal steps against cyberterrorists who are trying to sabotage this forum or inworld sims / services.
  23. I only sell bulgewear for "girls". The ones with an initial T Men have a "dufflebag" slider in their appearance settings that takes care of the bulge.
  24. How many RL companies do you think there are who want to establish a presence in SL at this point? See. I think it doesn't really matter if the program is still available.
  25. On my alt account Ishtara Resident, I made it from New Resident to Honored Resident within eight posts. I didn't really keep track of it, but I assume that I became a Resident (minus the "new") after one or two posts, and a Honored Resident after five posts.
