  1. Ok, so Saskia, Belinda, Eva, Suki, Tati, Laurel and I have found a new fun way to waste time and money each week! One of us (we'll take turns) will choose a garment each weekend, maybe but not necessarily from the weekend sales, and each of us has to style it. This week was the Thalia Heckroth "Andrea Tee Dress," about which I had expressed a little scepticism. I am now a convert: I think this looks pretty nice for an improvised look.
  2. These are great. The second one is really nice!
  3. Yay you! More please, this is beautifully moody and monochromatic! Lovely!
  4. An oldie which I don't think I've posted here before. Or maybe I have. But I messed around a bit with it anyway.
  5. This is really lovely! I have NEVER really got the hang of B&W. You seem to have no problems with it! Also, love the shorts and fishnets!
  6. Fair enough! You've made it look good. I actually don't think the body is terrible, and the skin for that matters only a little, in that not much of it is going to be showing (depending upon what is worn, obviously). The problem is that, to use just your example, no noob is going to have collected The Skinnery's Holiday gift. And yes, they can hunt around and find better skins that are free -- but that's actually a fair bit of work even for someone who is reasonably experienced at this. My sense is that some of the skins for the older system starter avis might work, and be an improvement -- but noobs need to be shown that these even exist. I am absolutely sure that one could produce a decent looking avatar out of these by replacing some of the parts -- particularly the head and skins -- with better quality freebies. The free Genus Strong head is still available, for instance. But who is going to tell noobs that? Or show them how to find such things? Most noobs are, I suspect, going to be left with the impression that the only way to upgrade is to buy fairly expensive upgrades.
  7. You've produced a really nice look! The caveat being, of course, that you've replaced the head with a well-made LeLutka one. I think that this is the way these bodies should be used -- as collections of "starter" bits and pieces that noobs can gradually replace with better (and of course more expensive) ones. That is, I'm assuming, NOT a Senra skin, though? It's way too detailed and well-textured.
  8. For the love of god, I hope not. The body and head are, I suppose, fine for the function we've been told they are meant to serve -- as quick and easy ways for noobs to produce a customized look, on their way to upgrading to more expensive and better looking commercial products. But from what I'm hearing, the triangles and mesh are not particularly good or efficient, and the rigging, from what I've seen of how it wears the outfits actually made for it, is subpar. I think many of us were hoping that LL was going to use this opportunity to establish new standards for these things. Quite clearly, that was not their intention . . . or if it was, they've fallen well short of the target. No one is going to be adopting these standards.
  9. A Scylla sandwich, with @Eva Knoller and @Saskia Rieko flanking me on either side!
  10. Returned to @Saskia Rieko's Vineyard at Natthimmel for another look around. Oh, important tip I learned today: Don't wear white to a vineyard. https://secondlife.com/destination/natthimmel
  11. it's unclear to me what is meant by "students" here, but the LBC quotes an Oceangate "spokesperson": "The spokesperson also revealed that virtual simulation was chosen in order to reduce the cost of training up crew members, which would typically cost $20,000 per day. "OceanGate can use this virtual environment to teach trainees about the possible physical applications for the Cyclops 1...and learn how to operate the submersible vehicle" she said." So, I don't know . . . what seems most likely is that it was used to showcase the trips for prospective customers?

  13. Oh excellent. Oceangate may have used SL to "train" its passengers. https://fandomwire.com/horrendous-tragedy-involving-the-titan-oceangate/
  14. Why does no one believe me? I'm trustworthy! (Mostly!) I am smart! (Sometimes!) I know how to use Google! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software_movement
  15. If only there were a Forum Cartel, with a hangout . . .
  16. There's a whole lot of women who won't be wanting to do that either. It's bizarre to me that they go out of their way to blur gender lines with these avis . . . and then use an AO that uses such an awful stereotypical "woman" animation. At least it doesn't have her batting her eyelashes and giggling idiotically, I guess.
  17. Don't you friggin' DARE! Yeeesh.
  18. This is an excellent question. I am assuming -- hoping -- that some furry or other non-human options will be introduced in the not-too-distant future. The implication from all I've heard is that Jamie and what's-his-face are not the only or last Senra avis that will be made available to noobs. If so, the sooner the better.
  19. I've been trying to think what to say here, Lindal. I'm not usually lost for words, but I kinda am right now. When I first joined the old forums -- Residents' Answers -- and got myself in a lot of trouble very quickly, you were one of the first kind voices I encountered. And you had a lot to do with my eventual ability to rehabilitate myself, so to speak, and become integrated into the community there. In other words, you did what you've always done so well -- lend a hand to people who are a little lost, and help them find their way. SL is going to miss you. The forums is going to miss you; you've been an incredible and important asset to both. Blah blah blah. Here's your engraved watch . . . More to the point, I'm going to miss you. A lot, probably more than you know. You have always been, quietly, a very human and humane presence in my SL. Needless to say, I'm not going to remove you from my friend's list; I thought of you as one long before we formalized it in-world. I entirely understand and respect your reasoning, but I'll be keeping half an eye out for a notification, "Lindal Kidd is online." But even if that never happens again, you'll still be there, in my list of friends. Where I need you.
  20. This had not occurred to me, but makes good sense, and is probably true. LL I'm sure makes more from a few "big" creators than from piles of mum-and-pop stores operating out of 512s. And I suspect you're also right that they had an eye to mobile while designing this.
