  1. Second Life isn't a community, it is many communities.
  2. I knew her name but had no idea who she was either. Having said that, she is 3 million twitter followers more famous than me.

  6. So what part of the building was causing the lag? Textures, scripts?
  7. To test if the mesh or textures or scripts cause lag, delete the scripts and textures from the building (if it has copy and edit perms of course). Delete all scripts from it, see if you notice a difference. Delete all textures (by turn the whole building into plywood) and see if you notice a difference. Perhaps even make one copy with textures but without scripts, one without textures and with scripts , one without both and one original. This way you can figure out what the problem is and perhaps keep the building but replace just the textures or remove some of the scripts you don't need.
  8. I am trying to do some work in a region I co-own. I have all the permissions imaginable, can do what I want there. Yet in some places, when I try and do some work, I get this message; " Second Life: Failed to unlink because you do not have object entry permissions on all parcels" So there must be a little problem with the permissions, but I can't find it. The object entry permissions of the parcel are set to everyone! Does anyone know where I need to look to sort this out?

  10. Here is a more recent screenshot, this is what I see all the time, when building, navigating, etc. And it works fine. Of course, I've been doing this for years now, not just for a moment as an experiment. I've not stepped on the cat yet, not often anyway. In the end it all boils down to what you're used to and personal preferences. A LOT of the standard SL settings are completely wrong and wacky, so in the end we all end up tweaking them. If the mouseview setting allowed us to do everything we can do in the regular settings, I'd probably use that ALL the time. Maybe I can tweak my camera so that it ends up a few inches in front of my eyes, so a bit like mouseview but without losing any abilities. Perhaps worth a test. Either way, I love seeing my primscale sim as my avatar sees it and if that means having my big old head in the screen, so be it. It is worth it. Immersion reaches a whole different new level when you see what your avatar sees.
  11. The pronlem is that we're comparing experiences and even if those were the exact same, they could still feel completely different to us. How you experience something is a personal thing. Also, I've been living in a cramped prim scale sim for over 4 years with the camera right behind my head while you've just experimented with it a few times. So it is impossible to compare our experiences. Maybe you can build your test room and send me a copy and I could at least tell you how I experienced it Useless, meaningless, won't change anything, but it would be fun. And of coure the photo is static, I look straight ahead for the photo. While walking around I also look around and fluently and without any extra hassle also use my camera and sometimes go into mouseview. What may sound like impractical to you has perhaps become second nature to me. It seems like everyone in SL experiences and uses their viewer in a different way. I can't even use the official viewer for 5 minutes before I go nuts, others swear by it. So we're talking a lot of personal preferences here and you'll never agree on those. As for the other reasons, building in prim scale has allowed me to build more on one region, fit more tenants in (who all seem to really really love living in a prim scale sim) and make stuff with a lower land impact.
  12. The only concession I make is that the ceilings are a little higher, walls in general are 3.5 or 4 meters high, doors 2.5 and 1.25 wide. Rooms are realistic size and yes of course you need to change your cameram that's a given, and your avatar needs to be prim scale as well. But I have no problem navigating these rooms. My camera: Bubbles in her room; Here a flickr group for prim scale in SL; http://www.flickr.com/groups/rl-scale-in-sl/ Anyway, we may never agreem so lets move on, sooner or later VR headsets such as the Oculus Rift will come to SL and then it will become a whole new experience, suddenly more and more people will see things trough the eyes of their avatar and then suddenly realise how huge everything is. One of the reasons why Berlin was picked for one of the first explorations of SL with the Rift; http://joyardley.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/first-oculus-rift-user-visits-berlin/ I think that that may, in the future, be a bigger reason to build to prim scale then any age old discussion will.
  13. I live in the 1920s Berlin sim. No half naked people, no annoying gestures and daily meetings where we discuss art, history, fashion, movies, politics, etc.
  14. Phil Deakins wrote: Yes I know there are RL-size rooms in SL Jo Yardley (Berlin) says she does them. But I keep pointing out that they don't work, even with 2-handed movement and drastically altered camera position. It's *still* to awkward negotiating the furniture without bumping into it or walking over it. My test included changing the cam to the position that was stated in the previous thread, and using 2 hands. I did all that, and it doesn't work in a 12'x12' furnished room. Of course you can stay in the room and blunder your way around it, but that's not the same as it working. It works for me and it seems to be working fine for the people of 1920s Berlin as out 70+ apartments have been practically fully rented since day 1 (4 years ago) and some of our tenants have lived there several years. We now even have 3 meter wide apartments under sloped roofs.

  18. To me there is a clear improvement. Avatars rez faster and so does everything else.
  19. I love that idea, especially as the avatar that keeps all the money looks like a proper evil land lord. But I fear it just wouldn't be practical. We have over 100 tenants in one region. Our landlord;
  20. I've been using the Hippo rental system for over 4 years now and I am thinking about replacing it. For every house in our sim Hippo needs a rental box, that is over 100 prims with scripts scattered over our sim, and not light scripts either. I like all the other options Hippo has but so many laggy scripts in one region is something I'd rather avoid. So I was wondering if there is a rental system out there with plenty of functionalities but it only uses 1 prim. One single prim is rezzed in the sim and tenants go there to pay their rent. I've seen one once so I know it is possible.
  21. Because I really dislike sculpts. To me they look like big massive orbs, they take for ever to rez and till they rez you're surrounded by big orbs blocking your view. Mesh is a lot more subtle while loading. I've visted sims with so many sculpts that I couldn't see a thing but orbs for minutes and sometimes I didn't have the patience to wait for them all to load. I also find mesh nicer looking generally, easier to retexture, etc.
  22. That last suggestion is sculpt, I need a mesh one I'm still looking, still can't find one! Can't believe it, a 1 prim mesh cat would sell like mad.
  23. I never wear a t-shirt. But I would gladly promote SL and I do, I've 'come out of the closet' as a SL user to all my RL friends and frequently post SL pictures and stories on my RL facebook. That has lured more then a few of my RL friends into SL and a few of them are now doomed.
  24. I find it completely logical and understandable that certain sims have certain dresscodes and avatar rules. For me SL is about immersion, visiting somewhere and imagining it is real or that at least there is a certain type of reality. If I went to visit a space station, I'd be well miffed if I saw a 16th centur pirate ship fly by my window. If I went to a prehistoric sim to be a dinosaur, I'd be annoyed to see some Barbie girl running around. A sim is a simulation, a recreation, a place with a theme. The stronger the theme the more immersive the experience. In my sim we have a dress code and avatar rules, our visitors, our guests and extra important our tenants and supporters come here to immerse themselves into the 1920s, they want to experience it as much as they can, they want to try and imagine that it is real as much as SL allows us. If you pay rent to "live" in the 1920s, pay a fortune on authentic 1920s clothes, do research so you can decorate your home in 1920s style, if you even spend time to learn about 1920s daily life and really enjoy getting up in the morning, walking around 1920s Berlin, chatting to your 1920s friends about 1920s things... you are really not going to enjoy some fantasy dragon wandering around in jeans. It ruins the experience. Now that may not be your cup of tea and you may enjoy quite the opposite, that is your right and I wish you lots of fun with that. But to me and the many people that have been part of our 1920s commune for over 4 years, that is not what we want from SL. And the great thing about SL is that it can make our dreams come true. So respect each other and allow people to enjoy their dreams the way they want to even if it does not fit your idea of SL.
  25. That is why I said that Eve Online sounds horrible, not that it is horrible. And yes, many RP sims in SL are horrible, for me.
