  1. You can run multiple instances of any viewer. Some viewers like Firestorm make it easy...you can set that option in Preferences. With others, you need to use the parameter /multiple in your startup command (you can add that to your shortcut).
  2. The eyebrows can't stick out. But either system hair or prim hair can be a problem. If your system hair (also called a baldy, bald cap, or eyebrow shaper) does not have the hair controls set to zero, it creates a system hair style for you. If you are wearing a prim hair attachment, as most of us do, most of the time, this system hair can stick out through the prim hair. Wear a different bald cap, or edit it to remove the unwanted system hair. If you are wearing a prim hairpiece and a bit of it sticks out of your eye, or elsewhere, you need to edit the hair. Most hair allows you to either use the editing tools to do this, or has a re-sizing menu that will let you select individual prims of the hair and edit them so they don't poke out of, or into, places that they shouldn't.
  3. I doubt it would get you banned, but posting things like "Lindal Kidd is a liar, stay away from her" in your profile could be taken as libelous. Someone could easily take offense and submit an Abuse Report against you. Just block people who annoy you, don't try to blacklist them. They'll do that all by themselves. See my blog post, "Blockage" for more on this.
  4. Here is a VERY short course. Read the guides and tutorials the others have pointed you to for the fine details. You have a lot of "starter avatars" in your inventory. You can find them by clicking the inventory button (with a symbol like a suitcase) and opening the folder Library/Clothing/Initial Outfits. You can change into any of these avatars by right clicking one's folder and choosing Replace Outfit. Or drag the folder onto your avatar. You can open an avatar's folder and wear individual pieces of that outfit. Right click a piece and choose Wear, or drag it onto your avatar. You detach clothing in one of two ways. If it is a clothing layer (symbol of pants, or shirt, or jacket etc. in your inventory), right click your avatar and choose Take Off/Clothing/<clothing type>. If it is an attachment (symbol of a cube in your inventory), right click the item and choose Detach. If you Wear an item of clothing that's the same type as what you have on, it will replace the current worn item. Things that attach to the same point will replace an attached item on that point. You can override these behaviors by using the function Add instead of Wear. You can also search for "WORN" items in your inventory. They will appear in boldface, and have the word WORN in their description. You can take off or detach them from there, too. You can alter your shape, if it is modifiable. Right click your avatar, choose Appearance/Edit My Shape, and play with the many sliders. Don't mess with the hair sliders, leave them at zero. Be sure to save your changes with a new name. If you are not good at creating an attractive shape, there are many freebie shapes, and ones for sale, out there. There are four "essential" pieces that everyone MUST wear at all times, to define their avatar. You can't take these off, only replace them by wearing a different item of the same type. These are shape, skin, eyes, and system hair. Most of your starter avatar skins have the underwear permanently painted directly on the skin. You can't take it off, but you CAN find a freebie nude skin and use that instead, or buy a skin.
  5. Are they all deeded to the same greoup? And are you wearing that group's tag?
  6. Check your spam box...both in your email client and if you have one, at your ISP's web site. About 3/4 of my messages from in world go through OK, but about 1/4 are flagged by my filters as spam.
  7. Buy a new contest board. But before you do, try this: Right click in the area where the board used to be. If it suddenly appears, it's just an example of the current "failure to rez" issue that is plaguing a lot of people. To refresh everything on your screen to look for other "invisible" objects, hit CTRL+SHIFT+R once to toggle Wireframe mode, then again to turn it off.
  8. In Second Life, they aren't "rooms", they are "regions", or "sims" (short for simulator). Each region is one grid square on your main Map. It's important...because unlike IMVU, where you can buy a "house" and immediately have people visit you because it is a "room", a place in the IMVU virtual world, a Second Life house is just a structure, a virtual object. If you buy one on the Marketplace, you will ALSO have to buy or rent land on a region to have a place to put it. But to address your particular problem: You need new graphics drivers. The pink issue is common with outdated ATI graphics drivers. Go to the AMD/ATI web page and get the latest drivers for your card. Also, your specs are very low for using Second Life. You should start thinking about getting a new computer! Your CPU is slow, you don't have enough memory, and your graphics card is a dinosaur.
  9. Linden Lab has always required that a PayPal account be "verified"...that is, linked to a RL bank account or major credit card. Nowadays, they are requiring that there be a major credit card in there somewhere...either linked directly to PP, or one associated with your bank account to prevent overdrafts. LL does this to protect themselves. They don't want to charge your payment method and be told, "insufficient funds". They insist on getting their money and getting it now. To discuss your particular case with LL, call one of the Billing numbers below during normal business hours, California time. US/Canada: 800-294-1067 France: 0805-101-490 Germany: 0800-664-5510 Japan: 0066-33-132-830 Portugal: 800-814-450 Spain: 800-300-560 UK: 0800-048-4646 Brazil: 0800-762-1132 Long distance ( not free, but you can use Skype to save some cost ) : 703-286-6277 **Note: Support is offered only in English
  10. File a Support Ticket. (This isn't a brush-off. This bug seems to be happening to some people.)
  11. If you are trying to teleport within a parcel and you get this message, it's not a problem. This happens when the land owner sets the land teleport access to "access point only."
  12. If you use the Access tab in About Land and uncheck public access, that will create "general" banlines. Everyone who is not on the access list will see them. These banlines only extend up to 80 m in altitude. If you ban someone specifically, by adding them to the parcel ban list by name, no general banlines are created. But if that particular person tries to enter, they will encounter banlines. These banlines against named persons extend up to 5000 m in altitude. If you ban someone at the region level, see KarenMichelle's answer There is no ban I know of that will prevent someone from walking over the border into the region but will allow them to teleport in.
  13. Rather a lot of them, in fact. Oculus Rift is not (yet, anyway) supported in SL. You'd probably have to write a custom viewer for it. You are not just on the bleeding edge, you are on the hemmorhaging edge. For gosh sakes, the Rift isn't even being SOLD commercially yet, they're only providing developer kits.
  14. Besides the simple act of becoming partners, you can have as big of a wedding as you want (and can afford.) See my blog post, "I Always Cry at Weddings."
  15. If you are using Firestorm, right click yourself and select Appearance/Tex Refresh.

    floating ao

You can also search "mermaid" and look for a mermaid AO. These are, as you'd expect, optimized for the floating life. For building, I like the self paced tutorials you can find either at The Ivory Tower Library of Primitives or on Tutorial Island.
  17. Just to start with, even "great" wifi isn't so great an idea for SL. Hook up an ethernet cable if you can. And, if you are using wireless internet...don't. Use FIOS or cable or even DSL to have a reliable Second Life. A third tip: When you delete a viewer, before you install a new one, be sure you have done a CLEAN UNINSTALL. For instructions on how to do this, see here: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_reinstall And, when you edit your post to provide KarenMichelle's requested information, include information about any error messages you are getting.
  18. It sounds like you are on the right track. Unless I'm not understanding your description, they are indeed boxes. How are you trying to rez them? You should drag them from your inventory onto the ground. Then right click the box and choose Open. Or, maybe it IS a picture. What is its symbol in your inventory? If the symbol looks like a little cube, it's an object (in this case, a box). If it is a checkerboard, then what you have is a TEXTURE, that is, an image which can be applied to an object. You can't rez a texture in world, but you can double click it to open it on your screen.
  19. I will add to Syo's answer: Because there is always a way for someone to find out if you are on line, Blocking them is the best alternative. If they show up, they will appear only as a nametag (or a green cloud, or a gray silhouette, depending on your viewer and settings.) You won't hear chat or voice or sounds or IMs from them, they cannot send you objects. It's a sort of nasty, warm, guilty pleasure for me to see some jerk I've Blocked hanging around uselessly and knowing how helpless they feel to be on the outside of my Second Life, looking in while I have fun without them. A definite "nyah, nyah" moment.
  20. There are four different Linden Home themes. However, not all of them may be available at any given time, because other residents are living in them! You can make a "second best" choice among whatever's available for now, and then check back on the website often, to see when something in your preferred style becomes available. When it does, Abandon your current home and apply for the new one. You can do this as often as five times per day.
  21. Are you buying land on the mainland? If so, are you a Premium member? If both of those are correct, LL may be having technical difficulties -- try again in a few hours. If it still gives you an error, contact Billing during normal business hours, California time, at one of the numbers below.
  22. I think LL used to sell these, but I haven't seen them advertised for years.
  23. Try turning off your computer, your router, and your cable modem. Wait a minute, then reboot everything. Other possible fixes can be found here: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_bake_fail
