  1. Isn't there a scholarly article on female fruit fly farting that you could have cited? Asking for a friend...
  2. Theory: In the Olden Days, threads just ran their courses and died natural deaths. Sometimes after many pages, and much derailing, but We Moved On. (Yes, I'm channeling Milne, as I do.) There were notable exceptions of course :gives @Scylla Rhiadra the side eye in knowledge of One Particularly Spectacular Food Fight... ahhh the memories: We could start topics on just about anything and we did, so while derails were popular, and many of us vied for Derail Royalty De Jour, we could quickly move on to the next juicy topic posted. Now? There are so many constraints upon topics, that given a topic that actually makes The Grade AND allows for some wiggle room to discuss, wrangle, ponder, hiss while making it harder to point and gasp, "DERAILED!" that given such a rarity many of us flock to such a posting event, and while we are loathe to admit that we have jumped into the WTF Are We Even Talking About? fray, we do. Because it is the only place and way we can have this kind of discussion any more. Just a Theory. Peeve: (le sigh that one has to type that Or Else) That there is no good way to test the theory and probably no good way to discuss the theory. So said Brilliant Theory and Observation will die a quick and unnoticed Death. 😭
  3. /me pulls up my old-fart chair (not to be confused with the skillful farting chair), and muses, "Well, kiddies, I remember a time when closing a thread was a Big Deal, as it almost never happened! IKR? Nowadays it is a Normal Tuesday sort of thing around here..." /me gets a confused look on face (not uncommon), and continues to ponder, "Is posting an anti-peeve on topic on a peeve thread?" For I have an anti-peeve: For once I got an actual, serious comment that I wanted to make IBTL! Woot! My peeve, should you choose to accept it, is that I don't know if I can post anti-peeves.
  4. As to the OP, a LM as a gift would 99.9% of the time have me NOT visit the store. I *do* appreciate it when creators *have* a LM vendor to click on at their booths. (Some people make it difficult to even know who is the creator, like how hard is a brand sign, people?) If the stuff at the event is intriguing enough then I will TP over there, but to make it a "gift"? ffs, no I agree about the preponderance of lame gifts at events. (I still hate calling these things events, see: Pet Peeves several days ago, . ) I stopped bothering with most of them ages ago, and am glad others have pointed out this was at Uber and makes things more crowded. I was thinking of shopping. I'll wait. And not pick up a gift box (unless anyone knows of a particularly good one there?) I like teal... If I were more organized I would have an actual list of "this creator has pished me off with a poor quality gift, an obvious ploy to drag me to the store etc and I shall ignore them forevermore!" but I forget, and so I forget, and I have to admit that a couple of places have gotten me a few times before I remember "oh. it is them. ick." Like you, I feel like many of the creators are just trying their darndest to make awful gifts, have bad customer relations, etc. Like purposefully, "I don't want your money." Maybe it is like Indie bands? They are only "cool" if you don't know about them? ETA: Ha! I realize I'm typing for Discord with the use of * * instead of Ctrl I for italics (or just using the italics function above...).
  5. Funny how that "RL is RL" stuff can be so annoying. While (as mentioned) I don't want to see a RL photo ever, unless it is an obvious role play situation I much prefer to talk to the real person behind the monitor, regardless of whether the avatar matches the human (allegedly). My theory is even in role play it is hard to take the "real life" out of the equation because there's only one operator behind the screen (allegedly). But I disagree that a real life photo tells you "more than a thousand words." First impressions (visual) are usually wrong impressions, from my experience. Not entirely, but mostly. Too many assumptions are made by the viewer. "Too old/young, fat/skinny, pretty/ugly, male/female, black/white... to "get me." " Some of that may be true but you can't tell from a photo (unless you are looking for a RL hookup and the physical items matter). I'm now babbling: Need coffee.
  6. I have to admit, I LoL'd at the OP, while understanding (sincerely) that it is a real peeve. Honestly? If skillful farting were the worst thing I'd been accused of, I'd be a happy camper.
  7. And I remember your arrival. (That isn't true for most people who have arrived, but many noobs don't stick around all that long, or post, etc.) You're a great addition to this place.
  8. It is amazing in 2023 ASL is still a thing. It was obnoxious and stupid when I first started SL. It seems to have tapered of in other areas of the Net (not that I'm an expert on that) but it is still going strong in SL, which is one reason I address it, tongue-in-cheek (as per most things) on my 1st Life tab. And for the amateur hall monitors, yes, this is still mostly on topic. First life tabs, baby! eta: omg, I typed the wrong year in!!! ffs
  9. Hm. I've not noticed a correlation between 1st life pics and *ick pics. I'm not saying it isn't there, I just haven't noticed it. And since I mentioned Da5id specifically having a 1st life pic on his profile, let me hasten to add that the *ick pic wasn't a bonus feature. (Trust me, if he had led with that we wouldn't be closing in on our 1-year anniversary. ) eta: "allegedly"
  10. Like many have said, I don't think there are any hard and fast rules. Like you, I enjoy my SL music. I will almost always pay the venue, but that isn't 100%. There's one club I practically live at and I tip the DJs every time, sometimes quite heftily, while I forget to pay the venue (they nearly hide the vendor for doing that, which I kinda like). And like you and others have said, I rarely tip hostess/host. I don't think it is worth my $L100 because someone said, "Hi, Seicher" when I TP'd in, ya know? But some of them DO work and are useful, besides just pushing for Linden Love (anyone who does that decidedly does NOT get tipped by me, barf!). Being partnered to a SL live musician, I've gained a new appreciation for a good hostess, and while I don't tip HIM weekly (ever) I do tip them weekly, along with the venues. Like so many things in SL and life in general, "It depends."
  11. This is one of those slightly tangential bounces from the OP, but it very much ties in: Am I the only one who HATES seeing RL photos of people on First Life pages? I prefer to interact with the avatar, with no nefarious agenda on my part, I think my brain is just too stupid to hold two images of one person in my head simultaneously. But I was beyond "not happy" when I first met Da5id and there he has a RL photo on his. Grrrr.. OK. I'm now over that. (Also I think it is his Forum photo, but those are so small...) When I have had a human photo on my 1st Life, it has been a tongue-in-cheek one of a very cheesecake Scarlett Johansson (and I'd still get the "omg! Is that YOU???" IMs... smh).(And of course I'd answer, "Yes, yes it is!" because I can't always not be an a-hole. )
  12. True. There are small festivals of various strangeness all over the States. I misspoke in my typing. I meant that I can't imagine the entire country of the USA stopping everything to recite century's old poetry from our "favorite" poet.
  13. Well, that one, taken verbatim does lend itself to a fast answer or three: yes/no/maybe. From what I can see, the discussion (that I have NOT followed for 32 pages because: sane), has flowed around very related topics, and expanded, but not bounced totally off tangent, even now, with the peed-in-cornflakes crowd.
  14. I see you have 3 posts to your name, so perhaps you don't know that this is a monitored Forum, where people paid by LL actually decide these matters. We rarely need volunteer hall monitors, but thank you for your concern.
  15. Well, maybe "many of you have done" isn't really "many." First off, the percentage of folks who post here versus the number actually inworld is small. I think quite a few people (I'm making the stats up, because I can), the vast majority who use SL regularly and for quite some time, have a wonderful, beautiful, creative SL, and we've used it to create things not possible for us in our 3D RLs (and some things that are). I'm not a Pollyanna, by any means, but the negativity in this thread isn't indicative of the whole forum or the inworld population. In my experience anyways.
  16. One of the things that pulled me back here a few days ago, is that I realized after a chance encounter with Scylla inworld and we were chatting and I was whining about updates to the Genus head never happening and she informed me, "It is happening now..." was that this place actually did keep me somewhat informed about SL. I'm not a techie as I've never had the desire to have a PhD in SL, but I seriously dislike being clueless about it, which is the case of a lot of people I meet inworld. I have met tons of people who are older avatars than I am, so pushing 15 or higher, who still are unaware of Bellisaria (that I can't spell)! I don't want to be that level of clueless. And even though I tend to spend most of my time in the GDF, I still learned newsworthy-ish things about SL that I just don't when I am not here. Fuss and bother! I see that several people have listed the same thing here. I'm thrilled that this thread made it to two pages. This may be a lifetime achievement for me. Thank you to everyone for playing along.. I do love the photos in many of the other threads in various subforums. Since it is next to impossible for me to take photos with the laptop I currently have, it tends to be a bit painful to look at, because I want to go do the same thing—take photos! But again, I learn so much from just looking at pick-toors. From photo styles, to shopping info, to... Of course, one of the things I "got" in the GDF still blows my mind: my partnership with Da5id Weatherwax, which isn't just in SL (in fact we spend very little time in SL). Who knew bantering here could yield such wonderfulness. Banter? Ok, mild flirting. But he kept being Scottish here, and throwing out "lass this" and "lass that" and it just wasn't fair! Right now, we have tentative plans for me to visit the UK in January 2024, hopefully in time for Burns' Night! (I'm coming for the Scotch, certainly not the haggis. And I'm coming to see men in skirts and reciting archaic poetry. I can't even imagine this happening in the USA... any of it. ) So, that's definitely on my list of what "this place has given me..." This place, in the past has also given me a real-life prescription for anti-anxiety meds (well a doctor gave me the prescription, the Forum was just the reason), which in turn led me to getting a grip and not really giving a rat's behind about some of the awful trolling and stalking and vendettas and craziness that it is possible to find here (less now than then, but it is still around). So, more "Internet Survival Skills." That's the start to my list. As I said in the OP, my original list is in double digits. Things like misanthropy-fuel have been added.
  17. So, on the combined list for the Forum "we gets..." is: Internet Survival Skills. Good one.
  18. PS to @Orwar's comment about your avatar reflecting your RL age. Even if you really wanted to, it is next to impossible to create a quality "mature" female avatar, or was the last time I tried. The BOM "wrinkles" are awful. Trying to be "naturally" not "perky" is impossible without looking like a caricature. It is an easier option for guys and always has been. But since we can be anything we want in SL, including non-human, why the huge deal about gender (unless you are trying to deceive and hurt and manipulate the RL operators behind the other monitors)? Then again, I have some interesting stories about the time I walked around in a gorgeous black female avatar pixel suit. Oh, wait, this is more of that misanthropy-fuel, isn't it?! Never mind...
  19. "It becomes deceptive when you claim that it is, when it isn't." This. Why is this breast-beating rocket-science, or so it appears by the rhetoric I've managed to read here (which is admittedly small because: eye bleeds). Or what Phil said a little while ago? Or as I dumbed it down, "Just don't try to be an a-hole." She's 81, btw ↓
  20. Apparently in my absence I've forgotten how this place works. Thinks? Something. I just read a few threads, and I haven't got a clue what people are on about and why so many panties are twisting. It is a food fight (apparently chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, and once again poor pistachio has been left out, but I do rather like rocky road...). Corn flakes have been peed in. It is too early to start day drinking. I know, I know, it is business as usual here, I'm just peeved that I've forgotten how to navigate it. (Peeved or relieved...? hm.) But I am certainly not calling for a group hug and can't we all get along, I'm not that stupid.
  21. I haven't been inworld much in the last year, but I still get tons of notices of "Shopping Events" (which are not events, but I digress...) I haven't shopped in eons. Peeve: A notecard that extolls a specific theme for the "event." For example, a Boho theme. I read that and think, "I like Boho, I shall check it out!" as I see my $L balance has been appreciating my absence. I pop into said event and it looks like every other shopping event in the last 10 years. Theme? I'm being generous to say maybe 5% of the vendors have something in the advertised style. 10% if you stretch the definition greatly. The other 90-95%? Well, it is the usual SL normal, i.e.: things the average streetwalker would blush at wearing. (I see the new "style" right now is a very exposed rear end.) Well, you all know what a prude I am...
