  1. You can't, unless you had markers on the corners of the original parcels and saved their positions somewhere. Once they were combined into a larger parcel, they lost their identity. What really counts is that you each end up with a 512 parcel after the rest is sold, right? So, subdivide your large parcel into two 512 chunks and a third chunk with all the rest. Sell the 512 chunks back to yourselves.
  2. This looks like an old problem that was never resolved. See VWR-7786 Crash upon Texture Upload The final entry in that JIRA report was a year ago: "Linden Lab is no longer making changes to the 1.23 codebase. Closing as unactionable because we don't see this problem in Viewer 2." If you are seeing it now in a V2 codebase viewer, it would be a good idea to create a new JIRA report yourself, including all of your own observations and referencing VWR-7786. All you have to do is log in to jira.secondlife.com and click the +Create Issue link in the extreme upper right corner of the main screen. Follow the directions to produce your report.
  3. That's a perfectly good method, and it will make sure that the object is actually in the airspace over your parcel too, instead of lapping onto your neighbor's. As Cinn suggests, you can also rez a work platform on the ground, raise it to 300m, and build on it. Before the Firestorm viewer made it really easy to create a work platform (using its shortcut command "rezplat"), my own standard method was to rez a cube, sit on it, and change its Z-setting to ride the prim to my work altitude. Then I'd stretch the prim, stand up, and go to work.
  4. If you are the sim owner or at least have the power to restart the sim, you ought to be able to fix it by (1) Opening World >> Region Details >> Estate and UNclicking the box that says Allow Voice Chat ; (2) Restarting the sim; (3) Opening World >> Region Details >> Estate and REclicking the box that says Allow Voice Chat ;
  5. Yeah, this Answers area is a bear to figure out. Not much we can do about it. I wasn't chiding you or Felix, BTW, just checking, to verify. You might try that driver that I referred to, though. I have rather deliberately not upgraded since that one, since I know that I have been getting good service from it on the 9800 card. Incidentally, I didn't realize it when I bought the card, but it is rated at a much higher FPS than many newer cards. I regularly get 60 FPS and higher.
  6. Hmmm.... This looks like the same question you posted yesterday (http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/I-have-new-nVidia-GeForce-9800-GT-card-and-SL-keeps-booting-me/qaq-p/1231021), so I'm guessing that you have ruled out the possibility of overheating that I suggested. If that's the case, and if you have also checked to be sure that your router isn't giving you trouble -- to test, bypsss it and plug your computer directly into the modem for a while -- then Peggy's guess about the drivers sounds like the best bet. For what it's worth, I am still using the 6.14.12.5896 driver on my GeForce 9800 GT card and it works just fine.
  7. You could have trouble with multiple viewers trying to share the same files. If so, you might be able to solve the problem by manually clearing cache for each viewer, one at a time, and then being sure that none of them are using the same folders. Here are good instructions for clerning cache manually from outside SL >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_cache_clear. I'm afraid that if that doesn't work, it may be a good idea to wipe all of the viewers off your computer and then reinstall them again.
  8. From the archive article? Yeah, but it's two and a half years old now. They have changed the search engine twice since then. But yes, the traffic information is cool to have. Nice work, Charolotte.
  9. LL posts minimum and recommended standards, but those are very sketchy and quite out of date, so it's hard to use them for more than a rough guide. You should be aware that LL has historically had a series of OpenGL problems with ATI graphics cards (see http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Land/owning-a-sim/qaq-p/1236197 , for example). If you're lucky, some SL resident who has that specific card will be able to tell you how well it works.

    owning a sim?

The answer depends on where the sim is and what price the current owner has placed on it. You can learn more about buyin land from >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043 . Note that in addition to the price you pay for the land itself, you will also have to pay LL an ongoing land use fee >>> https://secondlife.com/my/account/landfees.php?
  11. Nice find, Charolotte. Thank you. That's a clearer statement than I have ever seen posted by LL. Notice, of course, that it is followed immediately by the statement, "Traffic has a mild influence on the relevance of search results. It's one of many factors included in the search logic," which means essentially that you may see what the formula is, but they are not using it for much. Notice also that the other thread you discovered in the forum archives was dated March 2009.
  12. To my knowledge, LL has never let anyone know how traffic is calculated. Furthermore, to frustrate attempts to game the system, or perhaps simply because they felt like trying a new algorithm, they have periodically changed their calculation method. I wouldn't be surprised if they had done it again, but I doubt that you will hear that from LL. You're undoubtedly also aware that here have been an unusual number of off-line sims this past week, and that LL has been doing maintenance on servers across the grid. That may have messed up traffic counts too.
  13. You'll find that there are posts like yours in the Wanted section of the Commerce forum >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Wanted/bd-p/Wanted . That's a good place to ask.
  14. If you're buying animations, I strongly recommend that you do it at a shop in world. Almost all animation merchants have pose stands that you can use to preview anims before you decide which one you want to buy. Whenever I go shopping, I invariably come home with a different anim than the one I thought I was looking for at first, simply because there are so many great possibilities to choose from. Personally, I can't imagine being able to make an intelligent choice in Marketplace.
  15. As I said earlier, if your friends are using a viewer that has RLV enabled, disable it. They should also remove any offending attachments. Trust Innula's advice, and ask her if you have any questions about how to do those steps. If your friends want the additional peace of mind that they might gain from uninstalling the viewer and either installing a fresh copy or switching to a different viewer, that couldn't hurt. Understand, though, that simply uninstalling the viewer itself will not delete the cached user files associated with it. To do a clean reinstall, see http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_clean_reinstall . Those instructions will work for any viewer, although the file names will be different. As each person who responded has said, the bottom line is that you cannot be forced to do anything against your will, but you can voluntarily give other people permission to have control over your av and your possessions. Before you give permission for anything, be sure that you understand what you're doing and whom you are giving permission to.
  16. For a really good, quick introduction, go to http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Second-Life-Quickstart/ta-p/1087919 . That will get you started with the basics. Beyond that, there are no "rules." Second Life is not a "game," so there are no goals, no points to earn, no dragons to slay. You decide what you want to do and where you want to go. Explore, meet people, learn new skills, create things, become a merchant, join a group, go dancing, fly an airplane, be a samurai, .... anything you want. Welcome, and have fun.
  18. DUplicate question. Original at http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/video-card-error/qaq-p/1235775#M16220
  19. Here's the information you need to have for doing a clean re-install of your video card drivers >>>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Clean_Install . Please follow those directions carefully, paying particular attention to step #5. It is important to remove all traces of your previous drivers before you install new ones.
  21. crysstal Popstar wrote: Actually you can no longer use earlier versions. When you try they automatically upgrade to the new version upon logging in or won't even let you install older ones. [...] No, that's not true. You always have the option of using any older viewer that is still available. You can find earlier viewers at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes . Select the Release Notes link for the viewer version you prefer and then download the viewer itself from that page. Updates to LL viewers are rarely mandatory -- and then only for security reasons. You can choose to turn off any automatic updates by going to Preferences >> SetUp and unchecking the appropriate box.
  22. There's a very good description of gesture issues at http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=gesture_issues . I'd quote long parts of it, but it's better if you just read it yourself. Pay particular attention to the stuff at the bottom of the page. That advice works for all viewers, BTW.
  23. Luc's right. The only file formats acceptable for upload to SL as textures are PNG, TGA, JPG, and BMP.
  24. If they accepted some sort of scripted device and are wearing it, all they have to do is detach it to remove any permission that they would have given implicitly. Open inventory, select the WORN tab, and start systematically removing any objects that do not look familiar. And if they are using a viewer that allows them to have RLV enabled, they should turn it off. Now, there is no script that you could write or get that will protect them. The best thing you can do is identify the griefer and file an AR. Do NOT take any aggressive action yourself. Griefers would like nothing better than to have you attack so that they can righteously file an AR against you and have LL ban you from SL. The wise philosopher, Mr. Miyagi, offered the best advice: "Best defence, not be there."
