  1. Incidentally, for anyone in the UK facing the same questions go Sky (yes they do broadband too). They're the only company offering "truly unlimited" usage because, according to them, "we worked out what people were asking for in our market research and decided that if they really wanted to stream and download that much video they'd never have time to watch it".
  2. This is a forum for discussing how to script and scripting techniques, not an employment agency. Please post your request in Commerce > Wanted or Commerce > In-world Employment. PS: texture-animation is much less laggy than timers for texture-changing so you could use a single texture with 5 frames (1 per 10s) which are transparent and 1 frame which is your logo. Then all you need is http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlSetTextureAnim PPS: That's the sort of advice we give here. If you'd like to try writing this yourself we'll be glad to help, otherwise see you in Commerce :-> ETA: /me waves to Rolig
  3. Actually, yes, I have figures for you, as I'm having to use pay-as-you-go broadband at the moment so every Mb costs. The news is, generally, better than you'll be expecting. First, a lpt of broadand companies cap monthly usage to 1GB for 'basic' users - that really is only for face-twits and emailers. The next 'normal' step is 3GB and that's pretty much adequate for most internet users, but not really if you're streaming pron, er, YouTube, etc. In practice few people would ever break a 5GB/month cap, including watching a few videos online. ... Trouble is, it all depends. Some months I have a couple of GB of software updates to download, sometimes none at all. SL specifics: Most of the traffic between SL and your computer is texture downloads, in the other direction it's movements and clicks (so tiny). Textures and other downloaded data are of course cached so if you're sitting at home (where everything has already rezzed) almost the only thing SL has to send you is timing information, animation updates (when your AO changes, for instance), info about anyone walking past/objects changing and chat. If I'm doing that my bandwidth ticks over at around 50-70kbps (roughly dial-up speed) and in a 5 hour session I'll use about 60 - 70MB on average. Doing that every day is roughly 2GB/month. Treat this as the minimum you need to use SL. ... Trouble is, it all depends. You've just been shopping and changing clothes/skin/etc. That means LOTS of new textures, object-information, sculpts, etc. that SL had to download each time you TP'd to a different sim. That can easily quadruple your usage, but you're not likely to do that every day unless you're a serious explorer. (Or committed shopper, I suppose). In practice though, 8GB/month would almost certainly be your upper limit for SL. So - say 5GB for video-streaming and 8GB for SL = 13GB. You're almost certainly safe with a 10th of the cap AT&T are introducing :-) [i am building web sites and database, uploading and downloading those, using SL about 5 hours/day, using these fora for another 2 or 3 (they take a ridiculous amount of bandwidth because of all the 'pretties') but not using YouTube or other streaming. When I'm in SL I'm mostly visiting the same 4 or 5 sims except when I'm sailing. When I am I go through a lot of sims but there is comparatively little in them. I had a 5GB/month limit but found it a bit too tight, so now I'm on 7. It limits my web use a bit, but if something didn't I'd never get anything done in SL ^^] Does that help?
  4. You know you can just temporarily change shape and clothes yourself so you can model them both? :-) Do you have licences to use the copyrighted terms "Na'vi" and "Pandora" in this context?
  5. This is a viewer, rather than script, issue I think. On viewer 2.6x go to Me > Preferences > Notifications and uncheck "When I spend or get L$". If you're receiving many payments every day it's the only practical way to hide them all
  6. Sorry, yes, I was confirming it did, not requesting confirmation :-) Good catch, hadn't noticed it myself and I always use V2 for building
  7. Two questions: Did you AR (Abuse Report) the money sploders? Traffic-abuse is a breach of the TOS (Terms Of Service). Secondly, did the neighbouring land also belong to your landlord? If not, it's possible there wasn't anything he could do.
  8. What happened is that the person who sold it to you didn't set the permissions properly. 'Next owner' permissions are only set when an item is rezzed in-world. That is, actually rezzed if it's an object or put into an object's contents if it's anything else. That means your inventory copy still has the same permissions the seller's had. When you drag it into your HUD you are rezzing it, "bang", next-owner permissions are activated. There isn't anything you can do about it other than contact the seller. If you're nice, you will, otherwise you have a copyable version from which you can make unlimited transferable ones. If you're mean you can share it with all your friends (shhh! I didn't say that).
  9. NCI is my preferred site too but Caledon Oxbridge has an excellent walkthrough for all things SL and also runs regular classes on content creation and other aspects of the world.
  10. And your question to we other residents is what?
  11. US$90 is a significant amount. Your friendly lawyer might right a letter to LL requiring the landlord's RL contact information for that much. Then you can write to them in RL and threaten further action.
  12. The others have given you the right idea, now let me give you the right place: post either in Commerce > Wanted or Commerce > In-world employment. Please don't post in the scripting forums unless you want help with writing this yourself. Please also note - scripts can't manipulate avatars in many ways. If you are considering 'touch nose' or *shudder* other movements that will require an animation, which is another skill altogether (but still doable). Almost anything else should be straightforward :-)
  13. Just to confirm that this also applied to HUD objects, not just avatar attachments. It 'could' be because attachment offsets are so hard to use reliably but is more likely a bug. Stupid question - has anyone read the release notes yet (stupid, because I haven't!)
  14. Luk Wilber wrote: Thanks for the comments. Really is very necessary to discuss the topic before, to not cause losses to anyone. Just to clarify: the premium resident could choose only one option -> Home OR store. So I think the impact would not be greater than that already caused by linden homes. You're welcome, as I said in my first post in this thread it's not a bad idea, as such, just not likely to be popular. LL did float the idea when planning the marketplace (e-commerce, not in-world) so it might happen, but don't expect much support from existing residents. Meanwhile - you CAN use your 512sqm allowance to rent/buy a commerical plot. There's no need to have a Linden Home if you don't want it. As a premium member you can have up to 512sqm without paying any extra tier fees. Renting from an existing mall-owner is likely to get you a lot more assistance than you ever would from LL, quicker too. In addition, if you deed your 512 to a land-owning group there is a 10% bonus, so you'd be quite popular :-)
  15. Well done you Blondin, you're really on the case with these :-)
  16. Void Singer wrote: my posts for this thread aren't aimed at OP really, but rather anyone reading.... the hopeful idea is to demo some structures and considerations that might be new to the reader, and get them more familiar and comfortable with them and how they work... Ditto :-) Talking 'about' most of the time, hoping it helps someone. Entirely agree about optimisation too. Hehe, as you know, I prefer 'elegance' in my code anyway, which is possibly another form of optimisation :-)
  17. I should perhaps add that by the time someone has the skills and experience required to run any business in SL they also would have those required to rent/buy their own shop, so wouldn't need it "on a plate" from Linden Lab. Anyone coming to SL should spend a couple of months just exploring, looking around, meeting people and finding out how the world works. Personally, I believe they should do that before even considering making any sort of commitment, like becoming premium or otherwise 'owning' a home. Some will take to it quicker than others, of course but without at least a knowledge of how and where things are sold, how to create things, how transactions work, etc. a shop would be no use to anyone anyway. For the simple trouble people have with Linden homes look at all the questions asking "how do I find my home", "how do I decorate my home", "how do I create/texture/change/move things in my home", "why does it say 'parcel full', I have plenty of room", etc. etc. Those are the sorts of things people should learn BEFORE getting a home. Now imagine all the additional questions that would come up from people trying to make and sell things without knowing the first thing about how SL works, or even what it does.
  18. There used to be huge annoyance because all the images, etc. on the marketplace were on a non-secure site (I think) so every single page would pop-up "This page includes secure and insecure ... do you want to just see the secure ... Yes/No", which had to be clicked before you could do anything else. As far as I can remember the solution was to make login secure, and the payment page I hope, but all the rest insecure.
  19. About scripting/programming in general: Making the &*^%*^ thing work is most important So first learn how to do it There is always another way to do it, which is part of the fun So (try to) learn other ways to do it Making things easy-to-read/maintain and efficient/fast is usually a trade-off, there often isn't one "best" way Writing something that you can understand (so fix as required) is initially more important than making it 'good' But obviously we all want to be proud of whatever we create so 'as good as possible' is the ultimate aim Beyond that we get into questions of style, naming-conventions, layout, etc, which usually come down to personal preference and what you're used to. Knowing different approaches and techniques gives you more options, but it isn't worth confusing yourself with and no-one's working solution is necessarily 'best', just 'better' in certain aspects (some might just be all-around 'better'.than others but it's comparatively rare that a really, really, bad script/program will actually work). Void is particularly good at making things efficient although, for me, less readable so she might disagree with this but my recommended priorities for anything are: Make it work Make it clear Make it efficient And specifically by 'clear' I mean tidying - get rid of unnecessary variables, event-handlers, etc. add consistent comments, indentation, variable-names, etc. By 'efficient' I mean optimisation - through experience use all the tricks you can to make it smaller and faster.
  20. Darkie Minotaur wrote: Ahh - and - maybe you should explain what Worcestershire sauce is + how to pronounce it. I don't think it's available in any civilized country :smileywink: It's known and available, I think, but the pronounciation is a secret :-) UK immigration use it as a test.
  21. Je vous remercie pour ça, c'est merveilleux
  22. Without having to sell on the marketplace you can simply sell the clothes in-world, assuming you have land. Put the clothes in boxes. One box per outfit or however you wish to sell (Texture the box with a picture of the clothes so people know what's inside) On the general tab of the edit window set the box 'for sale', with the price you want. Probably set it to 'original' too, siince you want to get rid of them. NB: The clothes must be 'transfer' for you to be able to sell them or even give them away. If they aren't you can either keep them or delete them but that's all.
  23. This page will explain how to change mode: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Basic-mode-FAQ/ta-p/733541 Unfortunately, Linden Lab haven't seen fit to mention this 'basic' feature to new residents so congratulations on finding your way here to ask :-) [ETA: @ Peewee below: Yes, I quite like the way LL have done it. It's probably TOO basic but the really big issue is it MUST, MUST, MUST, say something like "This viewer is in Basic Mode to give you a simplified taste of SL. See this web page ... for instructions how to switch to Advanced Mode in order to enjoy the full experience. This does not involve any payment or commitment but has many more features to learn and so is disabled by default". ... None too snappy, I know, but something that tells them they're not seeing the "full" SL is important. No idea how to communicate that (lol, or anything else) to LL in a way they'll hear though]
