Their talent for self-creating cutting crisis is as astonishing as their talent for managing the crisis. Exciting to watch! The Sims series from Maxis/EA is probably the most successful long-running computer game series in history. In the years since Second Life started, Maxis/EA have completely rebuilt the game engine twice with a third rebuild due at the beginning of September. Each new generation has zero percent compatibility with the previous one and many people spend hundreds of dollars on all the expansions for each generation, only to have their content and worlds not be portable to the next generation. Each new generation is announced more than a year before it's released and in the interim they release new expansions for the old series, but these lame-duck expansions still sell. I imagine that the big reason is the world of The Sims is built on creating and storytelling, and not having things. Once you "have" everything you can, it quickly gets boring With each generation there are better ways to create things and tell stories, and that's what drives the users to shell out their money. I recently bought a new car for my avatar. I know it won't be compatible for the new world, but it's fun now and I can see having even more fun driving in a new world where I won't find myself unseated at an invisible seam in the world, spun around in the air for a minute and then, after finally manage to claw myself back to virtual earth, be hit from behind by my own unoccupied self-driving car like what just happened to me this morning. The fact that I won't be driving the exact same car doesn't really mean much to me, nor does the fact that I'll have to pay somebody else a few dollars for a new car some time in the future.
  2. Do you use a mesh avatar like a Toddleedoo or Wowmeh body and keep the HUD attached? Some HUD's can contain so many texture files that they use up most of your available video memory and the rest of the world will blur like you're seeing. If this is the problem you can fix it by detaching the HUD and only using it when you need to change your skin or any clothing loaded into it.

I think Linden homes default to "No Scripts."

I've actually started going on a bit of a buying binge. My thinking is if there's something I want to do in Second LIfe I might as well do it now. I just bought a new car for my avatar - it's an older car and I know it will never successfully transition to a new grid. So? It's a good car HERE, NOW. It was hand-made by creator who I know does good work and hasn't ended up on my personal blacklist for being annoying on the forums (that I know of; there may be a reason I end up buying alot from Japanese creators besides their often being awesome.) As far as generational thinking goes, I came of age during the 1980's (as my avatar whines, "Maaahhhmmm!!! You're EMBARASSING me!") Right now I work with a lot of younger people and I explain to them that we acted the way we did in the '80's because we all thought we'd be dead by now. Songs said things like: Everybody's got a bomb; we could all die any day,; but before I let that happen gonna dance my life away Nothing's permanent - everything's on loan here. Even your wife and kids could be gone next year. And they were talking about real life. And what's more, it was true - and still is. And spending a few dollars for an imaginary car I might not be able to use in a couple years? Cheaper and safer than cocaine and sex with strangers. So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999 - I explain to my young friends that for my generation we're already in the bonus round.

  7. Vivienne, as it happens I have been renting a property based on one of your skyboxes since late 2010. In that time my landlord has replaced it with heavily updated versions that you've issued twice so far, so apparently you feel your creations become outdated in about two years already. So what's the big difference about the idea that there will be a new platform for Second Life coming in two years that will make your current products outdated? Isn't that happening already, judging from your own workflow?
  8. It looks like you've rezzed something that releases temporary objects from time to time - I have a firefly rezzer that does this. It sounds like the rezzer is attempting to rezz some of the objects over land that you don't have rezz rights on. If there IS an object like this that you own you should be able to move it or change settings to stop th emessages.
  9. Stand in your house, go to the "World" menu and select "About Land." The box that pops up should have an "Abandon Land" button.

An imaginary house on somebody else's computer is an "investment"? Awesome toy, yes, but investment? Warren Buffetts they ain't. You can go to another grid. But I've got news for you - whether you lose your "possessions" because the provider changes things or because the founder says, "Sorry guys, but I can't pay the bills anymore - let's hold virtual hands and sing "Kumbaya" one more time before the guy comes to turn off the power," they're equally gone.

I am not a "hater", I just would like to know this is being addressed, and so far I have not heard a word. With a roleplaying game you'll logically always be in one role and living in one "world", so nobody was going to be on BOTH versions of Everquest. With an unstructured virtual world there's no reason why somebody couldn't be on multiple platforms doing different things in each one - there's no reason to have to "choose." If Linden Lab owns both platforms there's also no reason for two different administrative structures. Both worlds could also easily run on the same type of computer and networking hardware. Actually the Lab already runs two different "worlds" - the main grid and the beta grid. Theresa Tennyson exists in both worlds. (Interestingly enough, she looks quite different in the two worlds because Beta Theresa is actually a character in Main-Grid Theresa's dream, specifically her grandmother reimagined as a sort of action-movie heroine. Yes, I tend to overthink things.) The Beta grid is frequently running different software from the main grid.

But to hide from the fact that such a reboot is a perfect time to "sweep out the cobwebs" and sanitise the environment so that school kids on their iPhones can play it during recess, seems to me to be hiding from a path that is very possible. So, I raise the point: ebbe Linden can say to Loki - who is one of the three leading content creators in kid roleplay - that he can't wait to look at what Loki makes in SL... and I can raise the point that once he looks and sees what will his thoughts be? That kid roleplayers are harmless and innocuous (the truth I see) and very much welcome in SL and SLv2 or that kid roleplayers are sexual deviants (the truth of a vocal group of people in SL and these forums) who, along with Gor, Rape, Furries and Dolcett, pose a risk to the monetisation strategies of the lab? Some of the comments I see make me want to yell, "Babs, there IS NO FARMER!" We're used to the idea of one grid for all of Second Life but if the basic structure is revisited there's absolutely no reason why it couldn't be organized in parallel universes with different attributes - perhaps one where kids can run around in freedom and one where adults can do absolutely every sexual act the can imagine in public, advertised to different RL communities, and any given account can access either one or the other depending on their interests, knowing/caring nothing about the other. If someone's interested in both (or the other 18 parallel universes) and willing to behave appropriately the account can be set up so they can go from world to world whenever they like as easily more easily than you can go from one region to another in the current setup.

Let's see here - what you're saying is that the new platform will be simultaneously so different from the current Second Life that no content can be brought over, and then so similar that massive amounts of viewer code submitted by third parties for the current world will have to be re-used. No, that does not make sense to me.

Okay, then here's one of the things you actually "bought" and sorry for the inconvenience: 1a67-5565-3b64-005c-3567 Well, not exactly that, but what you "bought" in real life terms was actually a UUID number referring to a bunch of other UUID numbers which eventually get reduced to a whole lot of 1's and 0's. When you're connected to Second Life they create the illusion of an object. Not connected to Second Life? Useless as teats on a boar hog.
  18. If you're referring to the thing you're wearing that's CALLED "hair" (as opposed to a thing that actually looks like hair), you can't remove it or any "hair." The default hair object is one of the required parts of an avatar. You can substitute another hairbase for it but you always have to wear one.

It won't be running full scale for years, literally. When the new system starts up the current world will continue in parallel for as long as it remains profitable. Third party viewers will still work on the world that we currently know. It's too soon in the development of the new world to even know if there will BE such a thing as a "viewer" (for instance, Cloud Party worked without a separate viewer.)
  21. You can only export things that you are the creator of - you can't export something someone else created even if you have full permissions on it. Shapes work somewhat differently because they're just a set of slider values.

You now have pretty fair warning that, two years down the road at the latest, Second Life will become something of a lame duck. You have, in other words, lots of time to respond: this wasn't sprung on us at the last possible moment. For some, SL became a lame duck as soon as this announcement was made. And the effect will snowball -- unless LL comes up with some kind of reassurance, and fast. Electronic Arts/Maxis announces new releases of The Sims series (each release completely incompatible with the previous one) long in advance of their actual release, and in fact they generally release $40 expansions for the current release (which won't be usable at all for the new release) AFTER the announcement. And people buy them anyway, because they feel like playing with them for the time being, and they know the new release won't be full-featured for some time. Right now you're in a panic because you're afraid a huge group of people currently willing to pay a few dollars for an imaginary sofa will suddenly decide not to because they may only be able to use it for a couple of years instead of -- whatever the lifecycle of an imaginary sofa IS; I'm not sure if there have been any tests done in that area.

The idea of one "grid" divided up into "regions" isn't necessarily the only way of doing things - there could be multiple grids worlds, all of them comparatively seamless. One of the things Ebbe Linden mentioned right after he was hired was the idea that Second Life (the idea, not necessarily the existing "grid") could be marketed as multiple different brands for different interests.
