  1. I really appreciate your answering all these questions, but this question is about hiding *usernames*. My username is kershe, which no one calls me in SL. It would be nice if when I choose a first name last name combo, that "kershe" could be hidden and not float like a spoiler under my name.
  2. Wow wow wow. That sounds great. Can I ask: - will we be able to hide our usernames? (see below) - will firstname lastname combos have to be unique? Or can 20 people call themselves "Joe Doaks"?
  3. Hey! I forgot something that I did while I was still shopping for a body. while I was out and about in SL, at dance clubs, or at Mesh Body Addicts, when I saw someone with a really striking look, I'd ask, "Do you mind if I ask you which mesh body you're wearing?" And I won't tell you the results I got, because it doesn't matter - the thing is, you'll see what you want without having a mental preconception first about one body or another. The funny part is that I asked these two amazing-looking women at the same time which mesh body they were wearing, and neither was wearing one.
  4. I'm still going through the thread, but this has been going through my head for days, and now I'm listening to it over and over:
  5. I'm halfway through,* and really happy I started. So far there were just a couple of pieces and artists I'd heard of. Nearly everything was new to me, and I'm pretty sure my chances of stumbling on them by myself or from friends are pretty low. I've been adding names to my list of artists to explore. This is a great thread *I could possibly have been done by now, but life and work ya know...
  6. Yeah, I could definitely go for that. It's pretty weird to use the username as if it's our name.
  7. Wow, yeah. I am still on page one. But I will do it. Over days, I'm sure. I haven't heard a single song yet that I've ever heard before. Haven't heard any I hated, either.
  8. I'm going the beginning of this topic and listening to the songs everyone posted. One hour later: This is going to take longer than I thought! Still, it's great to get a peek into other people's heads. I'm trying to keep your avatar name and picture in mind as I listen to each piece. Also realized that I'm going to have to do the playlists on a second pass, prolly next week.
  9. I'm trying on some presents I got today! Yeah, I'm not so great at the SL photography. I'll learn.
  10. The Pretty Reckless: mainly I keep listening to "F**Ked Up World" and "Absolution"
  11. That makes a lot of sense.

    HUD not visible

Hey, so FINALLY! Yes - you know what was holding me up? I was trying to do all this on a Mac without a mouse, and although there are probably adjustments I could have made, finally I grabbed my linux laptop, plugged in a scrolling mouse, and it worked. I opened an edit window, then clicked on the sky so it wasn't editing anything. I attached the hud, but it didn't show up in the edit window, so I right-clicked on the item in inventory, and chose Edit. Then I rolled the scroll back, and there were the cross-hairs, way up high. I pulled it down, and yes, it was rotated and therefore invisible. So a few turns and it was good as new. Thanks to EVERYONE who patiently replied to question!
  13. Lindal, I have to confess I was being a smartass - it was late in the day and I had just had a beer, so I was more expansive than I usually would be. If I thought a bit, I'd have realized it would have to be an old and thorny question, and probably the true setup is something I'd never guess. Personally I don't care about changing names, but god I'd love to have a last name. When I see people with them, I think, "Yeah, you got in before the door closed."

Very cool! Thanks for the tips, @Lindal Kidd - I will give that a shot.

Honestly I don't know how I messed it up. I don't usually do "attach to HUD" because it's inconvenient, and none of the attach points seem to be where I'd expect them to be. I usually "add" because "wear" often ends up knocking off my hair, one of my shoes, or one of my hands. After I couldn't find the HUD, I tried attaching it to each of the HUD points in turn. I appreciate the way you all came back to add comments, because it's more interesting and fun to work this out than to just get a new copy of the item. I did find a funny workaround: if I rez the HUD on the ground, I can use it to change the color of my shoe. I can cam all around it, but it's black on the sides and back. And it didn't show up with the Ctrl-Alt-T. I'll keep looking at it.

Unfortunately, neither solution worked. I was pretty surprised because they sounded solid. So, as @Monti Messmer suggested, I'm going to look up the transaction number and the date and contact the maker, to see if she'll send me a new item. I must have messed up the HUD somehow, and moved it without meaning to.
  17. TIL that when I lay out my clothes for tomorrow, I ought to put my underwear on top, because in my distraction this morning I very nearly ran out of the house without any. ALSO, I want to go back to the sackcloth discussion on page one. I don't believe at all that it was called that because it covered a man's sack. Sackcloth is the cloth that sacks are made from. Burlap is such a cloth. The point of wearing it, rather than making it into a sack (for carrying things) is that burlap is very rough and uncomfortable, which is the point of mortifying the flesh. Also, nuns (who have no ballsacks, wore sackcloth.
  18. I have both, plus an Altamura freebie. I got the Altamura first, and liked it pretty well, but then switched to the Belleza Venus because I wasn't finding that many clothes for the Altamura. There *are* a lot, but I think I came upon a designer I really liked, and they only had Belleza and Maitreya versions of their stuff. Then I went through the same thing with Belleza. I REALLY REALLY liked another designer, who didn't make Belleza versions, only Maitreya, and I kept having the experience of finding versions of outfits for Belleza Freya and Isis, but not Venus. So I got the Maitreya. One thing great about all three bodies is that they come with feet. You don't have to buy them extra. Honestly, I think the best looking body is the Slink Hourglass, but again it's the availability of clothes. Since I got the Maitreya, I don't think about getting another body, because it's beautiful, and there are so many clothes and shoes for it. Belleza is nice too, but I don't think its curves are as smooth. And its alpha thingy is hard to use. I often was clicking and clicking and having the wrong part of me disappear. But honestly, I'd look at the clothes and shoes you like best and see which bodies they're made for, and then decide.
  19. I've tried to talk about SL to some people who are close to me about SL, but after a while I realized that they thought I was playing with dolls. I was talking about a house I built, and they thought, doll house, and the cool clothes in SL, and they thought doll clothes. In the end they were silently laughing at me, just as if I was saying, "You can be a barbie doll! And the barbie doll walks around! And there are other barbie dolls that you can talk to from all around the world! And you can dress them up and they can live in barbie houses and drive barbie cars..." Also, after the American version of The Office had its dorkiest character using Second Life, most of the people I worked with laugh at it even though they know almost nothing about it. Which is manifestly unfair, since they spend hours and hours playing Pokemon online and other games. So, I don't talk about it. Also, my husband thinks it's some kind of perverted thing. The last time he peeked at my screen, my clothes hadn't rezzed yet, and he said, "I see why you like it." I do behave differently in SL than RL. I definitely dress differently: I would *never* wear a lot of my SL clothes in RL unless I had bodyguards and dark glasses. Although I'm pretty open to people in RL, I'm a lot more open in SL, because relationships aren't as dangerous in SL. Or relationships, friendships are potentially more dangerous in RL. SL has definitely changed me in RL. I have tried some things in SL that I haven't been able to do in RL. I've never been on a motorcycle in RL, but in SL I've got my own, and I've ridden on the back of someone else's bike. I've done skydiving in SL, but not in RL. I've tried other things, too, and though I know they aren't real, they felt real enough that I kind of feel I've crossed them off my list of things to do.
  20. Don't hate me (actually, no, you can hate me), I'm going through Taylor Swift's playlist Songs Taylor Loves: A lot of the songs sound like Taylor Swift songs, and some are way too little-girly for me, but there are some I like quite a bit.

Thanks, @Rolig Loon -- I'll give that a try. (I'll come back and say if it worked, but it sounds like it should.) I'm going to try both methods, they both sound like winners. (Important to have alternatives!) Thanks, @Love Zhaoying

I have a pair of shoes with a texture-change HUD, and after the first time I used the HUD, I can't see it any more. I've tried attaching it to every point in the "Attach to HUD" menu, but I don't see even the smallest piece of it anywhere on my screen. Do I have any hope of getting it back into view?
  23. I never thought about us and our UUIDs until now, and I know I'm just speculating, but I am guessing this (and sorry but I'm an IT girl): inventory and payments and everything account and accounting-like is tracked by the UUID without the username usernames have a small footprint in the database, just for lookups, similar to the way domain names and IP addresses work in DNS BUT (still speculating): back when SL had last names, it was implemented using an awkward and unfortunate join between the list of valid SL last names, the list of UUIDs, and the set of usernames it might have been even worse than that, in that usernames might have been firstnames plus a number that stood for an SL last name getting rid of last names was a step toward correcting all that, BUT there's still some last-name-related cruft back in there and so, every time last names or changing names or non-western names comes up, some developer's anxiety level goes through the roof. But I'm just guessing. Anyway, even if it does work like RL names and social security numbers, people do change their RL names fairly often -- for marriage, divorce, when acquiring citizenship, and other more personal reasons. But their SSN doesn't change.
  24. What it is, I think, is people caring about you and what you say. It's about having a home and community. Maybe it's easier to do that in Forums.
  25. Try putting a space in front of the first N and after the last s.
