  1. I just love that description! I'll take great care with ignition sources next time I use it.. But many thanks for the very helpful explanation. Bit by bit, I'm beginning to understand things better.
  2. When things ran pretty well ok, apart from the odd glitch here and there, I never took the slightest interest in the technicalities of how this all works. But now that it clearly isn't running so well, I'm getting curious. I've been following this thread very carefully, and I think I'm getting the drift of the arguments being put forward. Many of you guys are way over my head though, and thus it is is likely to remain! But, like Shari, I never bothered to look at any stats in the past because there wasn't any need to - I don't photograph normal roads either! But also, I'm a user too, and when it takes 20 seconds for my alpha hud to appear, I can't help thinking that something is seriously wrong with the service I should be getting. This is what the region I rent a parcel on looked like last night:- I can now realise that there are some very nasty figures in there. It would take me days to try to find out where all those scripts were, using Area Search. Do I nudge the region owner into re-starting, raise a support ticket, or head off to college for a while to learn what the hell I'm talking about? (If anyone could explain what the important figures should look like, I'd be most grateful!
  3. Oh gosh, yes! I completely missed that one. Better keep the tissues handy after all.....
  4. That is incredibly noble of you! I wonder how many else would do the same? Not many, I guess.
  5. Nice work, Chic - thanks! There's 432 people in the starting blocks according to the followers of the The New Linden Homes Update Post. There were only 300 around a week or so ago; word is getting around! There's bound to be a few late entrants to the race, too, but is it too hopeful to think that supply might just satisfy demand this time? Oooooooh! Fingers crossed!
  6. There were definitely at least a couple; popped up in the Security thread, if my memory serves me right.
  7. That's a very interesting and clever idea. Heaven only knows how you could work out who is "active", though. It certainly serves as a reminder, to everyone who has gained any experience in SL, to be prepared to welcome in and help new people, at least. So thanks! (One slightly devilish thought has just occurred to me, though - one person's idea of activity isn't always the same as somebody else's!)
  8. It matters not one iota who owns premium accounts, in relation to this matter. The issue is simply about whether LL should have done the numbers first, and provided sufficient homes in the first instance. That topic has been thrashed to death already in umpteen posts elsewhere. If you're simply suggesting that its unfair that somebody can afford extra accounts, its time to join the real world. That's life!
  9. You opened this thread with a bit of a nuclear attack. Not surprisingly, you got a big one back! Please don't forget that this is a users' forum; we do not manage Linden labs. We can often be helpful, sarcastic, humorous, elated or even sympathetic, but we can't directly solve all the problems that can occur. Your humble apology, (possibly a little overdue!) has however not gone amiss in my eyes - thank you! Don't give up! Come back with some of that (network?) knowledge you must have. I'm sure you could be a valuable contributor to appropriate areas of this forum.
  10. If you haven't already found this page, you will find full information and some pictures of the new homes and houseboats here:- http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:New_Linden_Homes_2019
  11. That's all about network comms, isn't it? You could be a very useful contributor to the teleports/sim crossings issues.
  12. Ah! I've got it now. How to quote the post, not the name.
  13. I didn't intend my comment to be gripe about not being around to get a new home at the first release! I was really intending to comment on modern commercial practices, which I dislike intensely. The number of people that have posted disappointment comments do bear this out. I do accept the situation with the new homes release though, quite happily, and am prepared to sit and wait; yes, my turn will come.
  14. It is, in my opinion, a sad and most lamentable fact of modern commercial life that loyalty actually produces negative points. The emphasis is always placed on getting new customers; dangle the big carrots to get them. Existing customers? They really don't matter at all. Most of them can't be bothered to do anything about it if they get mistreated, and probably won't even notice anyway. The similarities are too evident, here at the new homes release, to ignore. I can't help suspecting that this was all about increasing the premium customer base. Not just one carrot was dangled, but three! Double plot size, skybox permitted and a very decent extra bagful of LI. Of course the existing members would want to jump at it, and LL know exactly how many there are. The only unknown variable in this equation was how many new many members would result, and I have a feeling that this has turned out to be more than could have been hoped for. So why release only a limited supply? I have heard arguments for this and that, the most convincing being the need to iron out wrinkles before the full release. The outcome, whichever way you look at it, has been to upset both existing members ("we don't give a damn about loyalty") and new members ("I know we promised you a house/boathouse, and put it up in big lights to get you to sign up, but we've got your money, now you'll just have to join the competition and hope"). The strangest, and possibly most wonderful, thing about this is that most of us won't be voting with our feet by leaving, because we still actually love the product!
  15. Thanks! I hadn't realised, at that time, that you won't be shown that page (with available homes) if you are already in possession of a Linden home. Callo Dinzel kindly shot me the link, but I needed an alt to see it.
  16. One whisper even suggested maybe as early as tomorrow (Monday). I haven't seen anything cast in tablets of stone yet, though. Until then, we can only keep guessing!
  17. I had absolutely no intention of trying to restrict anybody in any way; indeed, I clearly acknowledged that is was their right to only use the skybox, if that was how they wanted to use their new Linden Home. I simply thought that it was a crying shame that a quality home might have been grabbed purely because a skybox was wanted and, yes, I was mindful of the long line of people who would loved to have got one, in the first round of releases, for its full value. Their turn will come, though. Like everything else connected with this new venture, a little patience will be required.
  18. Or even "persons"? An additional controller(s) is more towards essential than merely helpful, in my view, for exactly the sort of reasons Blush stated.
  19. I guess that a little tolerance will needed until the new rules sink into people's heads, but if their system continues to be a nuisance just raise an Abuse Report. (They are allowed to use their own system, but it must conform to the new rules).
  20. They must still be using their own system, set contrary to the new rules. The Linden-supplied system will not set to less than 15 seconds warning, and will not teleport home.
  21. There may well be a demand for just that, especially if a reduced premium fee was involved. I suspect that a tiered charging structure may be in the pipeline for the future. I wonder?
  22. Loyalty actually seems to score minus points these days. I'm reminded of the motor insurers who offered fantastic introductory goodies to new customers, but put some sneaky hurdles in the way of renewing ones, like, at best, keeping the premium the same but doing funny things like making you cancel the old policy before you could start the new one......
  23. Have you already got an old Linden Home? It won't show you any if you have. That's a downside; you have to abandon your old home first - the advice on that is don't until the new batch become available. Then hope!
  24. Hell, NO! You pay the premium fee, you get the premium benefits, main or alt. There might be some envy that you can afford two premium accounts, but that's life, I'm afraid.
