  1. Agreed and that is one of the main negative arguments. I think we have to assume Sansar tech is looking as far ahead into the future as it can and trying to build for down the road. For me it isn't the price, it is the clumsiness of most of the gear. When things look like driving gloves and regular sunglasses I will be there. Until then the idea of MORE technology isn't working for me. I am very happy with Second Life.
  2. According to the reports I have read (many official) Sansar can be used without VR gear but is optimized for VR gear and certainly being MARKETED that way. Lots of comments about it (pro and con the wiseness of the choice), but I guess most of us won't know how it will work for US until the doors opens. It is certainly being PRESENTED in all the videos as a VR environment. So for example I am playing Obsession (the Myst folks) in the old fashioned point and click version but I also have the ability to play in VR if I had the gear. That's my thinking from the comments I have read. Since the content creators over there are reportedly under Non-disclosure agreements we only have bits of info and slips of the "tongue" here and there to go by.
  3. I didn't read it but there is a long post on the Living in a Modem World blog on this issue here: https://modemworld.me/2016/11/24/lltakecontrol-and-horizons-experience-update/ Hopefully that will give you some hints.
  4. If you can make nice texture clothing there is still a market. You would need to learn how to put your clothing into APPLIERS for the verious mesh bodies (Maitreya, Belleza, Slink for sure) and could still sell them as regular texture clothing to the folks that have legacy avatars. Mesh has definitely replaced texture clothing in some areas but things like leggings, sweaters to be worn UNDER mesh clothing etc are still in need for mesh bodies. Making and rigging mesh clothing is about as difficult as it gets creation wise. Then there are the huds for texture change so think about starting slowly or as someone suggested trying to texture full perm mesh clothing. And on that subject I would say be SURE and buy ones with demos. I see a lot of badly made full perm mesh clothing out there. Better to buy a good template that can be used in many ways than one that only looks pretty in the photo and won't move or is baked with super dark areas. Good luck and have fun.
  5. Well sort of. To my knowledge I wasn't thrown out of GCG. I was just there this last week looking in my inventory. Maybe you know something I don't know. No regrets. And yes I LOOOOOOVED Cloud Party. Was hoping Sansar was going to be similar - and maybe it will be but that's not my take from the comments I have heard.
  6. While waiting for company to arrive last eve I did a little research on the status of Sansar. Since the first wave of creators were invited in August, it has been relatively quiet. A few comments by testers were found sprinkled here and there, but silence has been the rule since we can assume NDAs are in force. After checking with my goto sources who had no news, I let Google lend a helping hand and found a few recent articles. One in particular actually had some news. Since a second wave of content creators had -- from the quietness standpoint -- not appeared on the scene I was suspecting that the opening originally slated for next month, then later into January had indeed moved further out. An article (a long one) appears to confirm that. Here are a few of the most important points -- in my mind anyway. "Sansar has been slowly inviting creators to build VR experiences since last year, and it will begin taking users in a larger beta early next year, with plans to officially launch soon after." So no need to break away from holiday shopping it seems. "Its avatars have the same bland, glossy prettiness of Second Life residents, but they’re far more detailed. Lips move in time with your real voice, and walking in real space will cause the avatar to take a few steps as well." This using VR gear. The "far more detailed" comment was nice to hear. ***************************** And for content creators, a bit of actual news. "But the majority of Sansar’s editing capabilities exist outside VR, on a piece of desktop software that people will use to place lights, add props, or perform other relatively complex tasks." This is sounding a bit like a Unity experience and I can see how this relates to the "building a whole experience" comment made on these forums a few weeks ago that didn't make all that much sense at the time. Personally, this is not making my heart pitter patter, but perhaps for some will work. Here is the complete article.
  7. From posts on the MERCHANT FORUM I gather that trying to list more than one copy of the same thing gets those items deleted as spam. I think this might be covered (the gacha thing) in the videos Torley made when the marketplace changed to viewer mode. Since I wasn't in need of that info I didn't watch it too closely Looking up. There are three in all:
  8. Not sure about that exact model but in general MOBILE cards don't do well in SL and neither do "old laptops". You best bet would be to try and 1.23 style third party viewer like Singularity (there are others). I have had two notebooks that wouldn't run SL ^^. The graphics card is usually the downfall.
  9. Checked your RECEIVED ITEMS tab at the bottom of your inventory. Unless you change the setting (maybe only in Firestorm) that's where marketplace items end up. Yes, it is a bit confusing. I have wondered a time or two until I remembered the drill.
  10. For many years the amount of items that you could have on a piece of land was measured in "prims" which equaled a primative shape such as a cube or a sphere. NOW since the advent of mesh, items are measured in "land impact". You can have a mesh house or piece of furniture with one "prim" (as in one OBJECT) but it could be many land impact (let's say 4li for example). The person making the item linked (joined) the pieces of mesh together BEFORE they uploaded the mesh model into Second Life. A house or piece of furniture or decor could also have many "prims" and have a lower land impact since not all mesh objects weigh 1 land impact (it gets complicated but I'll skip that). So land impact and prim count can vary radically. What you need to watch is the LAND IMPACT as that is what is used now to count usage on land. If you are on mainland (this is the end of November in 2016 for the archives) then currently a 512 free tier lot has 175 land impact points that you can use -- same for a Linden home except that the house is not counted against the land impact. The prim count is irrelevant for your needs as stated. A few mainland areas have higher land impact maximums but these are rare and expensive. Prim count will simply tell you how many pieces there are (single objects that can be unlinked) . This might be important if you wanted to MODIFY the house or use parts of a decor item separately, but not for counting up what you can use on your lot. Also you can often link small decor or furniture items together to save on land impact. Be sure and TEST this though as sometimes the land impact will go up. If you want to know more about that you can ask on the mesh forum. Note that many old-timers use the terms interchangably which is wrong -- just habit. So that doesn't help with the confusion either. Hope that explains things a bit better.
  11. Skins are a product made from textures (usally hand drawn) that add -- well a skin, as well as makeup for gals and facial hair for guys to your avatar. You can wear skins over the original legacy body OR you can wear them using APPLIERS on a mesh body. I suggest going to the marketplace and getting some free demos which you can try out and get a feeling how they work. Skins will not always work on every avatar. They work most often on mesh avatars and heads since those are a given and not subject to shape changes that the standard avatar offers. You are already wearing a SKIN (you can see it if you lookin the WORN tab of your inventory) as everyone has to have one on at all times. The trick is to find one that feels like "YOU". Happy experiments.
  12. Well I use Firestorm and haven't updated that or any software and no autoupdates except for virus database so for me anyway it doesn't seem to be a viewer or system thing. This has happened in the past for me, not just with my things but with other people's meshes. But it SEEMS to be a now and then issue. My fix was on both previous grids up in the air where there had been flickering before. Since down on the ground AND other platforms (opensim) have no issues with the same mesh (granted a different uploader on the OS mesh) it seems like something going on inworld. Glad it is gone though as it is definitely ugly.
  13. ChinRey wrote: 24 I'm wondering if it's worth the bother to make a series of houses specially to match the region. It's easy enough a style to follow and houses of this complexity shouldn't be more than 10-12 LI but there may not be big enough a market, I have to keep with the "probably not worth it" comment that I made last week BUT ... had to smile when I started playing with a sizing "demo" of a "Victorian Orangery" which TURNED OUT to be a pretty impressive start on an ultra modern abode --- LOL. Yes, much laughter at my end. I also tried a different building method which was WAAAAY faster ^^ so that was a plus. I am not sure that I will sell many models but since I am personally impressed I will at least finish it. So get to work!!!!! and make yours if you are going to .
  14. Just a followup note. All flickering is gone today at any altitude. I did nothing . A mystery for sure.
  15. Yes, I did the math as have some group mainland and yes since you can have groups in Horizons you could certainly have almost free land tier wise -- AFTER paying an exhorbitant amount for it. My figures when I did this last (maybe last month on a land post here) were a bit over a US dollar a month using the current exchange rate at the time of posting. But definitely mainland group land is the best deal monetarily. No arguments. But my SHOP is on almost a quarter of a sim and I pretty much need that land now as I have lots and lots of demos and furniture and such. That would be WAAAAAY too many avatars (although I know some folks that have 20 or more). And my rent is about half of what it would be if I was paying tier. So a big difference with the charges and such on parcel size.
  16. I don't think so; I have had those before and pretty obvious on the raw mesh if we are talking about the same thing. The fact that it only Flickers like you said up high when it doesn't on the ground or on other platforms seems to suggest it is the altitude thing. AND other things that have been fine since upload (a week or so ago) all of a sudden are starting to flicker (these were ALWAYS up in the air). Also I haven't had any Windows updates or graphics card updates etc over the last week. Nothing but virus updates which I can't believe would affect anything. It does seem like I can't do much except wait. This has happened before in the past and rectified itself (with no changes from me) so I am guessing that it isn't the mesh OR my graphics card. Time will tell. Thanks for your help.
  17. No, not that. Bigger patches of blackness that flickers (like single tris or maybe three together). Happens both with ALM and without. BUT, you are right on the sim thing I think. The reason why it worked at Plum and not on the other sims could have been altitude. No issues at Swanbridge at ground level (at least this morning and it was still flickering up in the sky). So something SIMILAR if not exactly the same. This was on mesh. It was also happening the last couple of days on items that had been fine a week or so ago. And, yes, I build on the ground (well my alt does) on the beta grid. NOT good though and very intermitent it seems which isn't helpful either. Building pad is at 3000 meters so not near the ceiling.
  18. So I just wrote a post on the mesh board about odd mesh Flickering which appears to be happening on SOME sims. The really bad news is that if you are on a sim that isn't running that server code you may never see the problem and might be presenting your work in a less than great way for folks on the problematic code(s). Here is the thread for anyone interested: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/Mesh/Flicker-ONLY-on-Main-Grid/td-p/3082307
  19. So I thought this was a graphic's card issue but lots and lots of testing shows it is not. Here's the scoop. Made some boxes and ornaments. Uploaded to Aditi to test LODs and textures. All great there. Uploaded the exact same file with the same physics model and uploader settings AND textures and got a nasty black flicker thing. There are no wayward vertices or overlapping prims. Good topology. Later I uploaded the same files to OpenSim. No issues there either. I have rebooted, closed programs etc and I still have a flickr on the main grid. Now I have seen that flicker before -- on my things and ones of other creators but it is disconcerting to find (once again) that the beta grid isn't all that great for testing as there seems to be some very odd things going on and difference between the two grids. I vaguely remember making this comment three years ago or so, then things seemed to be pretty equal for a long while. But this last month I have seen so many disparities with the exact same files uploaded in the exact same way that I am beginning to wonder what is going on. If any one has any ideas, let me know. EDIT: Well I think I answered my own question but leaving this up as it seems pretty imporant. Also going to link to from the MERCHANTS forum as this is pretty important for folks to know. I decided it might possibly be a server code issue. So I went to some other property I have (so for anyone official I was on Swanbridge and moved to Demondrille). Both of those sims had the same flicker. I then went over to PLUM (a LL sandbox) and tested there. No matter how far out I cammed or how much I moved the camera there was NO Flicker.
  20. Now at about $80 US for the top one so a good move for the lab, but I am not really seeing the draw other than "new and different". It would take a long time to make that money up (and assumably it will go much higher) with tier payments on a larger mainland parcel . And I rent which is MUCH cheaper than paying mainland tier LOL. Silly me.
  21. It took me awhile as I haven't looked at the auctions in years but for folks wanting to follow along, here is the page with the current ones listed. http://ld.auctions.secondlife.com/lin/catalogsearch/result/?q=horizon There are only a handful. Many "seem" to be on "ocean" but it was stated that the ocean could easy go away if the continent gets enlarged. Prices currently (6 hours after auction started) are running between 10,000 and 18,000 lindens. Will be interesting to see where they end up.
  22. HOHO - Actually some of them seem to have shutters you can pull down so likely those odd shaped windows tint for privacy and trust me as someone who lived a few months in an adult role play sim LOTS of folks are virtual exhibitionists . And so far as the one room thing, these places are relatively small (not filling up the whole lot) so for walking around and not veiwing through walls, one room is better I think -- especially for anyone new.
  23. Not sure if this is your issue BUT the check marks on the web form are only INDICATIONS to the buyer what the permissions are. You need to make sure those permissions are SET on your item. So check the permissions on the item inside the folder in your Marketplace listings folder in the viewer and make sure THOSE are correct. The checkmarks in the web form need to be correct also or your customers won't be happy, but they do not affect the item in any way. Not really awake yet, but that's my thoughts .
  24. Thanks. They still seem to be talking around things with semi-contradictory statement (note that I have no intention of buying so just a general interest thing). It says Residental Parcels as a heading but then says you can build your own home : You may build your own house or other building on the parcel, or You may use a Horizons Home. And then it says "home" again If you build your own home, you have freedom to choose the style and size of the building, as long as it fits on the parcel and is within your Land Impact allowance. The video says "same rules as other mainland" except for a few things but dosn't mention any sky restrictions. So judging by that (and who know if that is correct) someone could put a house on the ground and store (not too big of course) up in the air -- or the other way around. I guess we will all know soon enough. I didn't understand that the different odd things in each sim were to set that sim apart from its neighbors. I found a blimp on one and another interesting landmark on another. So that was interesting to read. Thanks.
