I've tried tinting on some things and didn't look good.  However, my landlady tinted my stairs a darker brown after I asked her and that was one tinting I saw that looked great!  Otherwise, I've had no success with tinting, not yet anyhow.  Plus the blue would probably only go black.  I don't think I'd like black either.  See, I was a painter, and I'm used to mixing very original colors.  Or, let me say, I am very picky about colors.  I can't stand primary colors, any of them.   I like my colors toned down with grey, brown, black... it's hard to explain but I'll try.  When I make a pink color I tone it down with brown so it's more of a soft, muted pink rather than a scream in your face pink; some people call that dusty pink or antique pink, etc.  I am very picky with colors, that's just me.

I'd love to find another antique bed on SL that has colors I love.  Or perhaps I'll make that a music room instead of a bath and vanity room like I was planning; something will come about eventually.

Calling something or someone repulsive can very well be a moral judgement. Think of the people who call homosexual love repulsive, or those who have used this word in the past when referring to couples of mixed ethnicity.

But even without getting hung up on this adjective, you certainly do pass moral judgement when you pit us pornographers and our customers (bad) against people who value art, culture and creativity (good, as long as it's not X-rated creativity), and imply that if SL had less of the former, or if the former were less public and more secretive, there would be more of the latter, and that SL would be a better place for it.

Not only is this both a moral and a value judgement, it is also a false dilemma. There is no reason why art and porn can't coexist in SL. I mean, you don't see us porn addicts protest against art galleries :) It is entirely possible to voice one's personal preference without any us vs. them sentiments, and of course without being insulting. SL is a big place that has enough room for all of us.

PS: Why can't self-proclaimed SL artists and cultural entrepreneurs do exactly what Stroker did and bask in the media limelight? You can't blame Stroker for the failure of SL's art and culture scene to show the public a different side of SL.

Scylla actually said she was making a moral judgement in her post. The only problem I have with all this, (personal preference stuff), is why do we have to constantly keep hearing about it?

I followed the link and read the Jumpy thing and wow, isn't it just snoresville ^.^ Birds of a feather I suppose... SL has changed because that is where the market is and LL have known that all along.

It is great for people to be able to follow their particular interests within SL but at what stage does it become hurlzville for others no matter the subject?

Pink marble skins for example are a supreme work of art and the joyous feelings they invoke by wearing one is simply inexplicable, but I don't think I wear one for its intended purpose as I understand it now, (could be wrong), but I don't make a moral judgment about that, nor do I want everyone else to partake of them.

Did I mistake it for beautiful art? That is why I wear it.

Here's a page I made about tinting, and it includes info about how to get more subtle colors http://lagalleriasl.blogspot.com/p/learning-how-to-modify-texture-and-tint.html. Very simple but try it on a cube first.

You can also buy textures and apply them in a similar way -- there might even be some in your library. But  I have found that if a texture is a pretty light color I can usually tint over it to good effect. But again, texture a cube first.  Tint you can always remove but if you retexture your bedspread you can't go back to the original texture unless you own it.

In any case there is no need to get rid of your bed because it is not the right colors.

In that case I misunderstood her. I thought she said that she wasn't making a moral judgement, only an aesthetic or personal one.

Thanks :) This shows that there is no clear division line between creativity and sexual kinks (I think the creator of the marble skins originally intended them for objectification and forniphilia play).

In the same way, a SexGen bed could be used as a "harmless" furniture item by somebody who simply likes the design. Most sex beds also include sleeping and cuddle poses, which are great for completely innocent photo shoots. There is a creative, artistic and social component to everything in SL.

Oh, I didn't buy the bed yet.  I asked the creator if she could make it in different colors.  She makes very nice things, and I really did kind of have my heart set on that bed.  So, thank you for the info, and I'll look into how or if I can mod it.  That relaxation bed and a harp in that room might be just what the doctor ordered.  But, no doctor visits in my room will be necessary.  They'd charge way too much, but if a cute male doctor, well....maybe....:matte-motes-bashful-cute-2:

Anyhow, thank you for the info.  Sounds like a plan to try as I really did love that bed, but haven't bought it yet.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote many wonderful and poetic lines.  One of my favorites, and almost captured in your signature is:

"Art is long, and time is fleeting,

And our hearts, though stout and brave,

Still, like muffled drums are beating

Funeral marches to the grave."

Omg, I'll have to change that.

Here's the story.  I have a "supposed" antique postcard that says:  Art is long, and time is fleeing.

Now, after I just looked up the quote on the internet, I believe it's a reproduction, probably made in China or somewhere else where English is not the native language.  My antique postcard is a fake.  I should have looked it up!  But, the art on the postcard is Art Nouveau and gorgeous, and I still like the postcard, though had doubts it was an 'antique', but now I know it isn't an antique, obviously.

I can give you some pointers on tinting things... being color blind makes you find ways around things.

Thanks, Dres.  Hugs back.

I'm feeling a little better, but no marathons or anything like that anytime soon.

I fight this disease with almost no medication because I don't want to get addicted to any pain killers.  It's not easy, but I do it.  I'm still a little sleepy.  Autoimmune diseases wax and wane -- they go into acute phases, and then get better.  I've been through these acute phases many times before, and they do get better with time.

In response to Keli's original post, I don't think this will make people more promiscuous or more ready to fall in love. SL has had free sex areas for a long time and those have always had a few menu driven beds. Homeowners who buy their furniture probably already have a sexbed. A love revolution? I doubt it.

I do so love pratchet's Discworld.... takes a world filled with all the worst abuses and vices, sets it in motion, and you get to whatch the novelty of kindness and decency succeed in the most unusual ways =)

@Mayality

how do you get that Churchill's (apocryphal) statement made him a hypocrite?

Kind of like the real world :) Or Second Life, for that matter. We even have dragons, vampires, werewolves, and of course trolls in SL. And lots of beefcakes that remind me of Corporal Carrot, probably because of their carrot-colored skins. I've even seen someone who looked like Nobby Nobbs :smileyvery-happy: Terry P. would feel right at home here.

Ah, Churchill's statement just reminded me of the double standards women have had to face for centuries.

These prior "men of power" with their mistresses and women on the side for centuries seen to be considered good that they have mistresses and the men would even make smoking rooms to gather with their cigars and scotch after being fed a great meal and even their wives would put their feet up and give them the cigars and the scotch after visiting houses of "ill repute".  Oh, that's normal for a man to do that, but only the women are "whores".  At least today, it's viewed as both are "whores" or cheaters or something else if unfaithful; (some) of the double standard is fading away, but only some.

Tiger Woods comes to mind as to how the media now views men who have a lot of lovers outside of their marriage.  Today  some of the men are called "sexaholics" whilst the women are still called something else, such as what Madonna or Britney Spears have been called.  The media now calls men "sexaholics" or they were abused in childhood or something so now they are promiscuous.  But, women celebrities in the media are just called "sluts", not the toned down version of being called a "sexaholic", or that the women had a problem with abuse, unless it's a Loreena Bobbitt type thing.

Ok then, yes, he is a chauvinist!  But, you're right.  That way of stereotyping the sexes (genders) was/is very typical, imo.

And there was me thinking Maya's quote was not Longfellow at all ...

It's astounding, time is fleeting
Madness takes its toll
But listen closely, not for very much longer
I've got to keep control

I remember doing the Time Warp
Drinking those moments when
The blackness would hit me and the void would be calling  <== You called, Void?
Let's do the time warp again...
