Should Second Life merge with your First Life?

When I joined Second Life about three years ago, it was a fantasy world where I could be whoever/whatever I wanted to be and nobody cared.  Nobody could hear me and all they knew about me was what I revealed.  Then voice came along and female avatars without voice were accused of being males in real life.  Now SL seems to be becoming an extension of Real Life with not much chance at being anonymous anymore with all the profile pages on the web, etc..  I can't be anonymous anymore with out making excuses.

Second Life just isn't as appealing as it was three years ago.  And VWR 2 won't log in anymore, anyway.

That's just familiarity breeding contempt. A lot of us go through the same stages in SL.

However, I'm betting that the majority of new residents feel exactly like we did when we first joined three or so years ago; full of anticipation and excitement, that first shocking experience of being asked "are you male/female in real life", so many new people to meet, places to go to, things to try out, etc etc.

Take a break, a week or two, install Firestorm, come back brighter.

It's whatever you make it.  I myself enjoyed the privacy and the fantasy for a long time.  Then I opened the first RL Adult corporate driven region bout 4 years back and since it meant RL clients, and RL money with RL staff resources, things changed for me.  Oddly, SL didn't change much, just how I did SL as it was my own choice.

Today I live with my significant other in RL who I love very much and met in SL.  But, that is for me and not for everyone.  The point is, SL is whatever you have it be.

If you don't find it appealing, then why are you posting here and not on a WoW or IMVU or Red Light Center or your facebook account?  I think what you are saying is that you are disappointed at how things are for YOU today in SL and would like something different.

But, it's YOU that can make that what you want. (OMG, am I sounding like Storm here? :matte-motes-big-grin-wink:)

That is as south of accurate as anything I've heard on these forums. In fact, in my four years in SL, the only time I was never pestered and pressured for pictures, voice, and whatnot was when I was dancing exotic. People didn't start pestering until we were having normal conversations as alleged friends that had nothing riding on what was similar or dissimilar between my RL gender and my SL gender.

And no matter what should have made it obvious what I was, whether it was me discussing women's issues, me discussing my daughter and what it was like to carry and give birth to her, pictures of her, whatever, there was always an excuse for others to move the goalposts.

The sense of entitlement within SL since voice came out is disgusting, annoying, and can be seen all over these forums even where half the people here seem to feel they have authority to demand whatever proof they want of whatever they want (although it never concerns anything but gender), and anyone who doesn't comply is a liar. Always the most negative connotation they can come up with. And nothing has changed since it started, so I wonder how anyone could think this is limited to escorts.

Second life is a fantasy world, as long if you live by you own set of rules and not what others try to dictate. I still login each day excited and enjoy myself in the world I have created with my own imagination. No I don't need webprofiles nor do I feel the need to justify if I am a female in real life by using voice on the grid. A lot of people THINK they must identify themselves first before they can enjoy second life LOL. Just be what you want to be here and if someone is soooo curious about your real life, well then use the MUTE button, because this proves the fact they don't belong in second life but in real life!!!! :matte-motes-dead: *meows*

What part of the profile page is non-anonymous? (o.O)

Challenge:  Find real life information about me via SL or admit you're being paranoid over nothihng. (^_^)y

When I posted my rant against voice... I decided not to do it in text.  Made things all the more fun. =^-^=

Ze mini-me or take a number and vait hyur turn to see Herr Doktor Frankenstein? Hyu might have to vait a while, he's very busy today.

stop making excuses then...

it's fairly simple, it's your life and your business, and if someone else doesn't like it, tough. Why should you feel responsible for other peoples misconceptions? if they get butthurt about it and want to try to insult you they just make themselves look like morons. the proper reaction is to laugh at them, then mute, eject and ban to remove the stupid from your world. done.

There does seem to be a lot of moving in that direction—the idea that we can all make SL an extension of RL. When the new profiles thing started that appeared to be the default. But it's pretty easy to change that. I still respond to SL the same way as always and I've no plans to change. Some people want different things; for those people the opportunity exists. If it brings more people who spend more money and tell more stories, then cool. Can't hurt. I don't think that anyone who does not wish to change must do so.

Actually I don't like Imma's style. I never have, but hey, her world her imagination. The woodbury thing did it for me.

I offer my RL to my friends and I distance it greatly otherwise. They have no right to my RL info unless I willingly give it.

I do give RL info, but if someone is asking me for it and I don't want to give it, then they choose to get angry with me about it? Their loss, plain and simple.

Truth be told, the only people who have demanded that kinda stuff from me are people who are into a sexual side of SL. Even though my profile clearly states that I don't do that, they find me weird. What more can I say??

Happy in RL?? Must be tapped! :))

Marigold, I did take a break.  It was a little over two weeks near the end of June.  I downloaded Firestorm and tried to log in.  It wouldn't.  LL's VWR 2 wouldn't log in.  In fact, after installing Firestorm and updating Phoenix, no SL viewer of any generation would run SL at all.  LL's VWR 2 would not log in and the viewers that did just sat there.  I went back to my old computer that is below the minimum specs now and could log in and run SL well enough to do what I wanted.  I just bought a new computer strictly for my home theatre and reluctantly installed Firestorm, LL VWR 2 and LL VWR 1.  LL VWR 2 still won't log in.  Firestorm ghosted my avatar.  LL VWR 1 ran the best I have ever experienced SL in three years.  But I still doubt that I will buy any land and reopen my club that I closed in February.

Well damn me, it can only mean there is a conspiracy against you.

I certainly have no words to comfort or console you.

Explain "Firestorm ghosted my avatar", because there have been no ghosted avatars since 6th March 2011.

You seem to have issues generally, and I think your time in SL has run its course. Stop swimming against the tide and go and do something that gives you more pleasure.

I always said I would only be in SL for as long as it was fun for me. It has had it's moments of misery, I have also experienced problems, seemingly with viewers (when it has been my computer at fault in actual fact). But I am back on an even keel, and my computer specs are really poor (according to a lot of "bright" people in SL, I shouldn't even be able to run Second Life with these specifications and yet somehow I do).

Look around you, truly look around you. Stop blaming other people for your own unhappiness and just move along.  Absolutely nothing (especially a virtual reality world) is worth so much misery and stress.

Aren't there some fantasy groups you could join?

Also, going with just the title of your thread, my answer would be no as there are no shoulds in SL, other than common sense and common courtesy, and acting accordingly to the sims owner's requests.

As far as people IMing you about your RL, there are no shoulds that you have to answer any of their questions.

There is voice chat in SL? If it wasn't for those ridiculous voice verification groups in some people's profiles, I'd probably never know. Nobody has ever asked me to have a voice conversation or verify my gender.

PS: If people pester you to expose your voice or strip on camera, you can always AR them for harrassment.

When I log in with Firestorm, my avatar is a bunch of red fuzzy dots.  I have never seen my avatar in Firestorm.  I have not been able to log in with LL's VWR 2 since July 6.  The best running VWR (and this is on my new 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac) is LL's VWR 1.23.

I had a lot of fun DJing in SL.  I even opened my own club.  But those days are over now.

I've just been reading your other thread: "do you get tired of tweaking", and understand a lot more why you are so fed up.  The title of this forum thread made me feel like you were getting "mid-season blues", a little jaded with the company in SL wanting more RL than they seemed to before.

It is a pain in the neck when something doesn't work properly, and in spite of what some other people said on the other forum thread, I have never had to tweak very much within Second Life to get it to work adequately, and I am not on a high end computer, far from it.  If you start tweaking things, it's like trying to unravel a ball of 2ply wool, it inevitably gets more knotted.

There was a really fabulous suggestion on the other thread though.  To uninstall absolutely every viewer, and all the components that may get left behind.  Do a disk cleanup, defragment, blow out the inside of the computer, really pamper that computer, then ensure your graphics card has got the latest drivers, reset your modem, install your preferred viewer and try again.  I never suggest uninstalling and reinstalling, but in your case I would do so. The "ghost" issue - you are the white blob in the video link? That can easily be fixed by doing a character test; that is something to do with your cache, and happens more often if you swap viewers, or if there is an interruption in your connection.

You obviously do not want to give up your Second Life, as miserable as you feel right now, or you wouldn't keep attempting to get help via these forums.  I really would like to see a happy outcome to your problem.

I can see a couple of Linden folk (and others) offering suggestions on the JIRA, and I do think that after being a resident for all this time, as you're so stuck, it is the Linden folk that need to be doing what they can to haul you back up onto your feet by giving you the right advice and suggestions. All of us run the risk of getting wholly browned off by hitting a block of obstacles as you seem to have done.

All I can offer you is a virtual hug, and hope your brainmush over this situation soon eases, so you can get back to having some fun and good times in SL.

Yeah, the suggestion from Linden Labs was "Check your local network".  Three different computers could log in with every viewer except LL VWR 2.  I even connect my "main SL" computer directly to my modem, bypassing my router with no change in results.  Sounds to me like my local network is good and VWR 2 is bad.

Folks are naturally curious about the human behind the avatar. Escorts were asked to Skype as proof before voice. I don't think we can lay blame for a myriad of issues by placing it in the lap of voice. [yikes crazy visual]  There are people who I talk with on voice and people who only type . I guess my family in SL is a mixed one with typers and voicers co-exsisting peacefully. ;-)
