If you are wearing one of the bodies that came with one of the avatars you choose when you sign up:

 - Look in the folder in your inventory for that dress, and see if there is an item that has an icon that looks like a shirt with a white/light blue crosshatched pattern.  It probably will have the word "alpha" in its name.  Right click on that and "Add" it - that should make parts of your body covered by the dress invisible so that they won't poke through.

- When you buy clothes, make sure that the vendor display indicates that the clothing item fits "standard" or "classic" bodies - when they do, then they almost always include an 'alpha' layer (if necessary).

if you use a standard body you need to use alpha layers to hide the skin. If the dress doesn't have those in the folder it's most likely made for a special brand mesh body.

If you use a mesh body, you need to use the alpha cuts from the hud as delivered in the same folder as your body.
If you use a (nearly) free body, there's a chance you possibly don't have the feature to use alpha cuts and have to buy specially fitted clothes, or even won't be able to wear just what you like and are bound to a very limited choice, or non at all because some free bodies are only meant as demo.

Also if you have a full body, be sure the dress has a size that's specificly made for your brand.

Just on on the blockiness and lack of smoothness it looks like you are still using the system body you need to check the folder of the dress you are wearing and see if there is an alpha layer included if there is wear it. Though it it is highly likely one is not included as very little new fashion is created for "classic" avatars these days.

A mesh body is a worthwhile investment if you aren't using one look in the folder of your dress see which body sizes are included they will be a good place to start on choosing a mesh body to get

Another thing you can do pretty easily is make a copy of your shape (if it's copyable), and tweak it so it doesn't poke through your dress. To do that, right click on yourself, click "edit shape," and then play gingerly with the sliders on the torso tab.

It appears that the neckline of the dress cuts through your body, so I don't think you can get a perfect result with an alpha.

I think its a terrible adivce to try to adapt your shape just to fit  _one_ piece of clothing and I even doubt its going to be a reliant solution, as the body might still poke through it with enough movement. To me it looks like the dress isn't meant to be worn with a standard body.
