I got a bit of a surprise here. A group I'm a member of had suddenly changed name and I didn't think that was even possible.

It's not a big change, the name used to start with a space and that has been removed. Does anybody know of other groups that has happened to?

The group owner contacted LL abut it and was told LL doesn't allow group names with a leading space so they changed it. But I'm a member of other groups that still has a name with leading space and none of them have had a name change.

Have no idea, as it a minor issue does it really matter?

Well, as far as I know, LL's official answer if somebody asks to change a group name is that it can't be done. Not that they won't do it but they can't - or rather they can't anymore. Look at Nicholas Philly's answer here for example:

Leading spaces in group names are supposed to get stripped out, however it seems buggy & not all group names with leading spaces have been "fixed".

See https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-11303

LL do sometimes make changes to group names at the founders request however there has to be a very good reason for them to do it. We had some of our official support group names changed when Phoenix viewer was replaced with Firestorm viewer.

I'm not reading the forum as often as I'd like to, but I was notified my group was mentioned here.

steph Arnott is right. The issue, from its technical aspect, is minor. That is why I prioritized it as minor on that jira ticket. But the case still remains mysterious, if not weird. ChinRey only expressed what many members of that group ask(ed) openly or privately: Was our group the only one changed? And if yes, why?

According to Caleb Linden, there is a procedure which strips those leading spaces. According to Whirly Fizzle, this procedure is buggy. According to this thread and numerous other experienced active residents, no one can indicate a similar group which is changed, besides mine, several weeks after the change was happened. Conclusion: This new procedure picked my group first, "fixed" it, and then stopped working.

I'm sure the fact our group was created as an in-world public forum for Project Sansar and also the fact LL seems to be a bit nervous, lately, about the kind of publicity their new baby receive, is just a coincidence.

To avoid misunderstanding: I'm not talking sarcastic. I do believe the change wasn't really made manually. Our community is not oriented against LL practices, after all. On the contrary, we are all Sansar enthusiasts whom only goal is sharing news about it and talking about how it can be a great next generation platform.

However, to some members, what seemed to be a selective treatment was taken as some kind of an intimidating warning for us to be very careful of what and how we discuss our topic, thus conversations dramatically decreased.

So the real issue here is not LL to change the group name back, but for us to have an example of equal treatment which I could use to prove the silliness of the conspiracy theories and thus to restore group's functionality.

Unfortunately, when I asked for such thing from Support, the official answer was that providing a publicly available information, such as a group's name, would become "an issue of a privacy concern"(!). (the full dialogue with Derrick Linden, Support Supervisor, is going to be available to any of our members, as he allowed me to copy-paste it at will, but I won't paste it here, on forum)

I'm not sure if ChinRey wanted to help the community by taking the initiative to search for that 1 example or she was simply curious (if first is true, I thank her), but I do know she doesn't believe on such speculations either.

PS. Creating a new group with a leading space is still possible for anyone.

I have seen group names  with leading space and the effect is to show up at the top of your groups.

Pretty cunning because it ends up always "in your face".

If Linden is making the changes across the board, then it seems fair to me.

I'm afraid you missed both the point and the question here.

It could had been fair if no one could do it (I agree with you on that, SaiJinhua, and I told them - In fact, I told them to also remove all characters besides latin letters and numbers) or if trully everybody could do it. If everyone can do it and some indeed do it, except 1, then that's simply something worse than unfair...

Most of us have seen such groups. The question here is: Have you ever seen any of them being changed??

Right now, all similar groups I know of, both older and newer than mine (the last one is some days old) are still untouched. If the procedure is indeed buggy, as Whirly Fizzle suggested, the least they could do is turning my group's name back as how it was when I paid to create it (we all know it's possible for them), and when the bug would had been fixed, the (alleged automatic) procedure would re-remove it. They didn't even have the courtesy to do that.

Hello Whirly, I was trying to name a group and found out I can't start with symbols and space. But I see there are groups starts with space. All should have been fixed?
