A new article about Second Life dropped a few days ago. It's worth a quick read. There will be lots of (justified) quibbles about this piece; there are a few things it gets wrong, or that it mischaracterizes. It's also written in a rather thick and occasionally annoying Postmodern dialect that will be familiar perhaps to some who do media studies, Queer Theory, and the like. Were I vetting this as an article for publication, I'd want to see the argument tightened up a lot. tl;dr basic thesis: the things that seem broken, out-of-date, or difficult about SL are, paradoxically,. the things that make it most worthwhile as a site for "queer spaces" -- meaning not necessarily LGBTQ+ oriented, but rather more generally transgressive and even a bit revolutionary. GIMP can handle the PSD files, I assume you mean the SLUV templates that most people use so don't worry about that. Skins are a particularly dark art though, you don't need to be a pro but the very nice skins you see people using in SL are the result of a lot of practice. Still, have to start somewhere so why not grab GIMP or something and see what you can do? Download the templates from here: https://www.robinwood.com/Catalog/Technical/SL-Tuts/SLPages/AVUVTemplates.html - your image editor (I'm assuming GIMP) will have a layers panel, use the eye icon to toggle individual layers from these PSD's on and off. They're just guides that allow you to see where the 'seams' are and most major body features. Maybe start with a free base skin from somewhere like here and customize before starting something entirely from scratch? They are old but would be good to learn from I think https://www.outworldz.com/download/ Also worth experimenting to find out about the little differences between bodies, SLUV might be standard but you'll quickly find that skins need to be made to fit certain bodies. Nipple placement is the most obvious difference between bodies but there's lots and you can only really find them all by experimenting. Learn to use Firestorm's local texture feature, it is essential for this type of work since you will be flicking between your image editor and SL a lot to see the results. I would guess that the more pro people are possibly using software like Adobe Substance to make their skins but I'm not sure. There's a lot you can do with an image editor like GIMP or Photoshop though, you'll definitely want to get quite familiar with this type of software.

Alright, Nina reporting for duty. I've finally had my sleep. Four hours is enough, thank you very much. So while eating breakfast, I did read through the article and yah, I can see what happened. It's written in the kind of authorative voice you get in academic papers but with none of the scientific rigor to earn that with. It gets so much fundamentally wrong that it casts doubt on the things it gets right, leading to knee-jerk reactions by people that feel misrepresented. However, I'll echo the sentiment that it does seem to convey a positive message overall and is very much sincere in its intent. So, diving into it. I'll put down a basic rebutal or perhaps a nerdy "actually...". While the nature of jank or imperfect systems leads to new forms of community, communication and socialisation, that is not in itself special to Second Life. Every game I've ever played has had jank and uh... <--- Take it from me. I know. Whenever there's interaction between players, they will find ways to communicate and to build communities around that. For example, I've been playing Rabbit & Steel with a friend. A cute game about bunnies taking on increasingly more difficult bosses while the game simulates typical MMO raid mechanics. Our entire communication was to bounce and wobble using the bunny sprites and so after each victory, we did our little silly dance. We never talked about doing that. We just kind of naturally did. An imperfect system has created a wholly new expression. It's my experience that this is universal. First Person Shooters had the infamous tea-bagging thing, where they used repeated crouching to simulate a certain act as a taunt. Dark Souls had entire legends surrounding the use of certain emotes and Minecraft has crouching as a courtesy bow. The reason I'm writing all of this is a simple question: How the hell is Second Life special, then? Transgressive, revolutionary spaces? While Second Life can be that, it's certainly not unique to it. Case in point, have a gander at this picture (source: https://www.thegamer.com/final-fantasy-14-xiv-community-spotlight-hgxiv-interview-housing-community-designers-glitch/) What you're seeing is players breaking the spaces and confines of the game (the ability to place premade objects inside of player houses) to create new and unseen items. For example, the light source above the stove is the bum of a snowman. Stool tops double as cooking plates. In some places, the houses have gone through twelve years of constant revolution, of constantly being broken and intentionally glitched to create something new. This has led to communities whose entire expertise it is to know how to break the game. There's an element of subversion in there, of taking a predefined space, breaking it and making it your own and I kind of see that same energy in Second Life. Like, the whole thing of mesh is frankly ludicrous the way it is implemented. First, we more or less hide our system avatar, then attach body parts on top of it and then layer further parts over that while again hiding parts of the meshbody on top of the already hidden system body which funny enough, technically already IS a meshbody. So we're wearing two bodies but hiding one of them and half of the second one. That's breaking the system to create something new. I posit that it's not that different however from glitching a snowman into a cupboard to fake a lamp with it. Now then, what other qualities does Second Life have that are mentioned in the article. The historical aspect of abandoned builds and history. Okay, maybe? While I do think that some of the houses in Ultima Online are older than Second Life itself, I'll give SL that it probably has got a lot more of that and with more creative expression. There's a certain eerie feel to driving around and seeing houses that still look like they were last updated 15 years ago. It does allow the mind to wander and as a person that adores industrial ruins, I enjoy that aspect. However and this is obviously personal opinion, I am not seeing decay and rot, I'm seeing regrowth and reclamation. I don't see a world forgotten by time, I see a world ready to be reshaped, remade and reborn. Potential, versus the sensation of loss. As for the closing statement then, that the disjointed chaotic janky mess of Second Life can serve as an ironic retreat from an ever more gamified real life - well to that I've got this to say: Hello, heya. She is also very good about communicating with residents, whether it's about reboots, sim issues or new services that she is providing. I forget exactly. WIllowdale parcels are outstanding... beautifully landscaped with quality trees, plants, water features, birds, but with plenty of room (and LI) to add your home and your own landscaping and deco. Personally, I have never seen an estate where parcels are prepared this way. It must take considerable time and expense, and makes them welcoming even before you settle in. Tenants also get access to several fun areas, such as a racetrack and a glorious beach. But more importantly, the estate owner, Imagin Illyar, is very kind, and VERY prompt to help with any issues which might arise (for example, a region needed a restart due to some SL quirk). I have frequently recommended Willowdale to friends, for the reasons given above. Given what all you get, rents are very low. The rules are logical, common sense ones, clearly showing an understanding of how SL works - unlike others I have seen. Many rules are geared to peaceful coexistence with other tenants on the same region, such as restricting sounds to your own parcel, and keeping sky builds out of view of preexisting builds. In summary, I cannot recommend Willowdale enough. I found out that she owns and runs her sims all on her own, yet her service is top notch and she responds much faster than a lot of rental places that have people working for them. Goes to show that it's not always how big your name is in SL that makes a good service. After contacting her, I went ahead and rented a plot, it wasn't what I had in mind, because I wanted a corner at the time but was determinded to make Willowdale our home. I had asked that she let me know when she might have a corner up for rent and sure enough, good on her word, she did. So....another move was in store, but we didn't mind because we found our "forever" home with the best service possible! No problem returning anything you don't need to the owner. Imagin was very helpful and understanding when I moved in. The parcel itself is beautiful... my visitor words, not just mine. It is also a quite private place to live with absolutely no annoyance from neighbors. No complains and Imagin is always ready with advice about how to get the best out of your investment. She also gives free things for winter landscaping. It is WELL worth the cost to rent land from Willowdale Estates, and I can't imagine living anywhere else on Second Life. We've just released an Alpha build of Firestorm that integrates the Linden Lab PBR project viewer. I have to emphasise that this is Alpha, in the same sense that the LL version is too. This is not release quality but the hope is that many of our users will be keen to test this new technology out and at the same time provide ourselves and, more importantly at this stage, Linden Lab, with valuable bug reports and user experience feedback. PBR server-side support is not yet ready for mainstream and is only available in a limited number of regions on the main grid (Agni), it is also present on the beta grid (Aditi). This is a shiny, fun, bug-hunting spree. The more we find now, the less painful things are later on.
