  1. Did you leave out the proviso that those hired would be required to export their content to your OpenSim grid deliberately? Because the implication there is that anyone hired by you would need to be willing to relinquish control over their creations, since you would have access to their assets. You would be wise to inform people of this in your request, as many creators are (quite rightly) wary of uploading their creations to private grids. ETA: Not to mention, community guidelines may also play a part in choosing where/if your request should be posted.
  2. 'Full' regions exist as one region per core. This varies depending on the server 'class'. Class 5-7 servers each have four cores (most private full regions are class 7 currently), and thus four regions per server. Class 8 servers each have eight cores, meaning 8 regions per server. The majority of these are mainland regions (from memory, though this will change over time). Homesteads share, at a rate of 3 regions per core. Instead of the typical 1 region per core. I'm not immedialely sure which server class they run on, but it's safe to assume Class 7's (therefore, 12 homestead regions to a server). These numbers are typical, and will vary over time. Additionally, this is a residents forum, only those with the surname 'Linden' represent official LL accounts.
  3. In most cases, this issue goes away by restarting your network router. You get a new IP address, one that doesn't accidentally match a previously blocked account. If you're on a shared network connection, as part of a housing complex (such as domaciles), or on a public (such as a coffee shop) or static IP address (such as a company) where you all share a large connection, this can be a tougher problem.
  4. SL is a big place, I don't know how many people here (if any) will be able to help with the specific product that you bought. Best solution is to IM the creator. Most modern operating systems (Windows XP, Vista, 7. Linux Ubuntu. OS X) all come with 'package' applications that open compressed files. '.RAR' is an operating-system-independdant compressed file, the protocol is built by a third-party company. There are other freeware package applications that might be suitable depending on your operating system. WinRAR, 7zip, etc, etc. Use Google and verify the integrity of the websites you're downloading from if necessary. I hope that helps.
  5. You have to understand that your idea of SL's direction is asynchronous with how others socialise around in and around SL. SL doesn't and can't exist in a vacuum. Resident-run projects such as 2ndHub, SLProfiles and AvatarsUnited have shown that there is definitely a market for 'avatar-centric social networks'. Lots of SL residents were (and in some cases continue to be) affected and outraged by Facebook and Google+ with their steps to delete avatarian/pseudonymous personalities from their networks. Plurk, Reddit and Twitter continue to have a large SL-focussed audience. Personal blogs have always been, and continue to be, incredibly popular with residents. Moreover, I contend that your original premise that SL has changed is incorrect. 'Sharing' has always been a part of SL, as evidenced by the viewers 'Snapshot > To Email' and more recently, SLURLS. The only difference is that it's finally getting easier to do.
  6. Catznip can do full-screen still, and is mesh compatible. You can even toggle it with Ctrl+Enter, as before. The viewer however isn't in the Third-Party-Viewer Directory, but does otherwise conform to the TPVP as far as I'm aware. G'luck.
  7. The OP was the RL partner of the guy being unfaithful IIRC. She joined SL to rant but didn't play. Odds are he just left on 'Remember My Password'. Mystery over.
  8. Gesture sounds are played from your avatar. So the more zoomed in you are, the louder they'll be. Also of course the 'Ambient Volume' is often less than 100% by default. Check your settings and how close you are to your avatar when testing. And remember that those are likely the same for other people, except they'll be hearing the gesture from a different source.
  9. Uh, putting this scientifically? Guess. Everyone uses different speakers/headphones, has their volume sliders set differently and since sound is presented in a 3D space, it'll be at different volumes the further someone is away from you. You'll never figure out a 'best' volume for everyone (especially since some people hate ANY gestures with sound). Saying this though, try to ensure it's a good volume for you. Or reset your sliders to the default, and see how audible it is. That should give you some metrics for measurement. Additionally, you can't edit a sound files volume after it's been uploaded.
  10. You might try IMing Terrence Linden, I'm fairly sure other teens reaching 18 have bumped into this before and he was the one to resolve it.
  11. Monti Messmer wrote: Maybe just mark them as answered for the OP would prevent people from raising their post count ;-) Sounds like you may be mixing up the purposes of the Forums, with that of the Answers pages. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Answers/qac-p/Answers Answers are 'open' until they are 'closed' or resolved. Solutions accepted by askers improve a posters 'reputation' using wizardry. Forums on the other hand, are for open discussion. Hence the name.
  12. Try enabling cookies on whichever browser you're using? If you're using the in-world browser you can do that in Preferences.
  13. I do agree! In-world is often a good way to go in that regard. Forums can be a little too asynchronous and constrained to exchange things meaningfully. There's also plenty of groups and locations focussing on Samurai, Bushido and all-sorts of associated subjects. I'd be happy to chat in-world also.
  14. This isn't a limit imposed by RLV, it occurs due to poor scripting of RLV-enabled gadgets. Essentially, 'Pop up menus' or Dialogs, are limited to buttons with a limited size (23 characters). Many scripts simply collect a list of names of nearby avatars and use those names in buttons, not checking to see if any names are too long. This causes the menu's to fail. The solution to this problem is to buy better toys. Test them first, or ask for a demonstration from the creator to double-check that they'll work for you. Additionally, using 'force sit' from a collar (OpenCollar and Dari's will both work) will enable your friends to skip past this particular problem by forcing you directly.
  15. It can. I would remove the teacher from the virtual classroom, and have a scripted Listener object that passes the chat - without the question-asker's name - to the remote location where the teacher is through a Speaker. The Speaker would also act as a Listener so that the teacher could communicate with the students remotely (again, through the Listener object). The students would however know who asked which question. It's only the teacher who would not.
  16. Most of my warnings occur from Android's native browser, which is Chrome-based. But I agree, getting notified about the warnings is a browser issue. I don't think expired certificates is likely to be too much of a risk.
  17. Some firewalls hate cross-site-scripts. Like how the forums are HOSTED on secondlife.com, with the interface and most of the back-end on Lithium.com Plus, LL have never been good at keeping their Security Certificates up to date. I think my.secondlife.com shows as expired right now, but I don't check them often. Life's too short
  18. If everyone looks grey/cloudy after everything else has rezzed, change your active group. If people see YOU as grey/cloudy, Ctrl+Alt+R to rebake! Never ever accept objects requesting Debit permissions unless you're absolutely, 100% sure that you want a script to have control of your L$. Ctrl+Alt+Shift+= to kill particle spam. Never ever allow Media to auto-play, to run from other parcels or allow Media-on-a-Prim in public. Never ever TP somewhere with Voice enabled. Enable it after you land, and ideally after another avatar lands.
  19. You should be able to find the information you need at:- http://secondlife.com/corporate/brand/index.php There's a quick option to 'Get Started', and those pages should walk you through the do's and don'ts of using the inSL logo. Good luck =]
  20. Attachments are rigged to the avatars 'skeleton', as opposed to the avatars 'skin' or mesh. This skeleton doesn't move with avatar physics, as the physics layer only deforms the mesh. Therefore, attachments are unable to move with avatar physics.
  21. "invasion of privacy" is a relative (and hyperbolic) term. That's why people in this thread are using the term, "expectation of privacy". And indeed in this case, your expectation differs from the reality of SL. To simplify; it's not an invasion if the privacy was never there.
  22. Thanks!! I do feel like I've accomplished a lot, I've been working now for 18 months and it's going really well. But I absolutely couldn't have done it without those clients and friends who were willing to entertain me while I chatted to them endlessly about design documentation and scribbled out user manuals at 4am before heading to class. I wouldn't want to name them here (unless people want to know?) but they do know who they are. I mostly just want to show that professional skills are a lot more than printed qualifications, and there's tonnes and tonnes of 'soft skills' (people-moving, management, finances, etiquette, business standards) that can be practiced and fine-tuned in SL to improve employability. At the very least it's common for SL to improve confidence and interpersonal-communication skills. For me, SL provided the 'experience' my employers wanted while my RL studies provided the paperwork.
  23. Probably not, more out of infeasibility than lack of success. There's no way for a user to 'demand' or 'debit' L$ from an avatars account. You could script a bot to receive L$ payments in-world, and catalogue those payments based on senders UUID and then 'credit' those UUIDs with pretend-L$ within your database, which WOULD allow you to track payments. You could then see if the UUID has sent enough L$ to recieve the product they should've been paying for. But that's a more than a little backwards. And of course you'd need plenty of error-checking to make sure a break in the system returned resident's L$. I'm sure many residents would be wary of sending L$ as an avatar-to-avatar transaction (payment before goods), vs. an avatar-to-item (payment for goods) transaction. Additionally, you would have to ensure that you complied with these policies:- http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:New_Policy_Regarding_Inworld_Banks http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Policy_Regarding_Wagering_in_Second_Life And lastly, the correct forum for this would be:- http://community.secondlife.com/t5/LSL-Scripting/bd-p/LSLScripting - LSL Scripting Forum Hope that helps.
  24. I joined SL when I was in college studying what was essentially a Comp Sci qualification. After a while in SL the scripting bug bit me and I got into working with clients to produce custom scripts. Most of the time I explained my RL studies and they were happy to help by treating me like a professional, and basically with their help I got pretty good at customer-relations, time management and a bunch of secondary (professional) skills that would be useful to me once I was finished with my studies. Fast-forward a few years and I attended a job interview at a small company who were looking for an IT Pro in multiple areas. They asked me pretty quickly if I had experience of what's known as a '3-level' commerce website or had any experience in sales. I was quickly able to show them a website I'd built for use within SL that shows category and product information about virtual products, and demonstrate how I'd used time management and other skills to build a reasonable 'trading reputation' during an extended period of unemployment. They were beyond impressed. Without SL I wouldn't have been able to keep my skills 'sharp' (while unemployed) and have actual, practical experience at business/professional relationships. It was totally and utterly invaluable in getting me what has been my 'dream job' thus far.
