  2. Inventory doesn't load (quickly) for a number of reasons. Something I've found that can help is to open the inventory window and type something in the search box (at the top of the inventory window). Then wait. Then wait some more. It should indicate how much of your inventory has loaded and been searched. When it finally stops, you can remove your search and see your inventory (hopefully). As for not teleporting. I haven't seen that in years. My best suggestion is to try and teleport somewhere else. Worst case, open the map and click some random mainland. Teleport to that spot, then try getting where you want to go. Seeing as the USA is getting over a long weekend, it might be that things are just a bit more glitchy than normal and stuff will sort itself out as the techies at LL figure out what need to be rebooted.
  3. Dead simple answer: make the channel you use a variable and set it per product. If you are not already doing so, make sure the listener script verifies ownership of the HUD before doing anything or people will use their own hud to change other people's things (unless that is what you want). There are other ways, this is just a simple way.
  4. Months ago, I started having issues with running Second Life on my laptop. I've only got the Intel integrated (HD4000) graphics. Granted this isn't exactly ideal for Second Life but I only really need it when traveling. The issues involved flickering of the screen. in-world object distortion, and some strange coloring issues on menus and buttons in the view. Something I called a "rainbow" effect on buttons. Since there was/is a mandatory viewer update imminent, I upgraded my laptop. The visual issues remained. I noticed Intel has a recent update to their video drivers and there is a discussion about Second Life on the Intel forums. So, I upgraded the video drivers too. I got 2 nice surprises. First, the flickering and rainbow effects are gone (yes!) and secondly, I'm getting about 5fps faster rendering on the viewer than I was before the driver upgrade. I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1 64-bit with the 64-bit Intel graphics driver version Second Life client version 3.6.1 (278007).

There used to be a whole thing for finding that laggy neighbor but it says now it is no longer available. Now, when a region goes down (including a request for a restart), it comes back up on some other random server that has space. This is also the reason why they no longer offer private island a "tier X server".

  7. I have asked LL to subdivide land before I buy it to avoid the tier issue. It's worked for me in the past. I submitted a support ticket in the Land category. It usually takes a couple of weeks and you run the risk of someone else buying that plot before your request is fulfilled.
  8. You are describing several bugs and limitations of Second Life. Not all of them are related to server memory usage. For example, the bugs around things not rezzing (hair, parts of building, etc.) showed up about the same time that LL started making noise about specular and normal maps. Although I have no evidence to support my guess, I suspect that the rezzing issues are related more to changes in the rendering engine to support the new features than server memory. The music stream comes from complete different servers (not even managed by LL). The only thing the SL server has to do is send a URL to your viewer. While there might be a bug in the SL server that is preventing it from sending the music URL to your viewer, it is probably not memory related. The more likely culprit for music not playing is on either the viewer or the streaming server end. It is true that teraforming will use more RAM on the server. But so does script usage, prims, and avatars. I was under the impressin that the expected usage of a full region on the SL server was more like 800MB or 1GB but I can't find a reference to that in my quick search, so I may be way off. And, just to add complications into the attempts to diagnose the cause of issues in SL, there are multiple regions per server. They share resources (memory and network for sure, probably CPU as well). So a very busy region on the same server as yours could affect your region with no way for you to even know about it. So ... to answer your question, there is not "a" fix for the issues you are experiencing but I'm pretty sure LL is working on fixing some of the bugs and trying to reduce the impact of some of the limitations as best they can.
  9. I've seen a number of "theatres" and "movie rental" places in SL and I've always wondered. How do you get the rights for a public showing/streaming of the movie? Netfix pays a pretty large chunk for their rights. Hulu and Crackle are owned by the publishers and only show their own content (although Hulu does cross-link with permission to Crackle). So, how did you arrange the appropriate permissions?

There are quite a few exploration quests around the Second Life mainland. Most are available to everyone. They are generally simple find a hidden place and collect a prize type of adventures. There there are all the resident built things to enjoy. I highly recommend looking at the MadPea games.
  16. Yes, welcome. Do you know about some of the added features that are opening up to you? The occational premium gifts? (I got an airplane, car, etc.) Do you know how to get your Linden Home (should you want it)? Have you found the sleeping dragon? It's a fun little hunt for premiums. Do you know about the premium only sandboxes? They are marginally less laggy than the public sandboxes. Have you been to the jungle? Another premium only area.

  18. Ralph, As you figured out, most large private estates (USS, Fruit Islands, etc.) have rules. Most are in-world land rental businesses and why would any business want to let another potential compeditor connect with them. Others are community groups (such as USS) and have developed their rules over a long period of time as a balance to keep everyone already in the community as happy as possible. The rules for the Linden mainland has always been that private regions don't get to connect unless specifically invited by the Lab (as USS was). Your best chance, as you've figured out, is to provide your own water regions for sailing. You are free to have a loose covenant and encourage others to connect with your regions.
  19. Like you I have issues with bandwidth consumption at times. Although most months I'm fine. I have found a number of things significantly lower bandwidth consumption: Lower graphics settings to "mid" or "low". I have tested this, it does result in a measurable reduction in bandwidth. I'm guessing that the servers don't send some unused information (like lighting and shadow details). Reduce your draw distance. 64m is fine most of the time. I've never needed more than 96m unless I'm driving/flying. Turn of the audio stream (parcel music). Turn off media (parcel media and media-on-a-prim). Turn off voice. Increase your SL cache (I think the default is 1GB, mine is 4GB). Only use a single viewer, don't switch between viewers. Reduce the maximum bandwidth settings. I haven't actually seen a difference in total bandwidth consumption per day with this, but it probably won't hurt. You can turn on audio stream, media, and voice when needed but leave it off otherwise. I managed to get it down to around 100MB/hour of online time and even lower if I stay in one region.

  21. That is pretty much how the parcel media works. In fact, you could probably use the same URLs that parcel music streams use. Hey, that's simpler than I thought. Using a script to set the html-on-a-prim address so when someone change it through the script interface (like a lot of SL radios) should keep people in sync. When I get in-world, I'm going to see if I can do just that. :-) I went in-world and fiddled with a script to try and get a music stream through html-on-a-prim. I learned something out of that. The shoutcast player (that plays parcel stream) is not linked to prim media. So, it is a bit more complicated. There needs to be a shoutcast player on the Internet somewhere (Flash maybe?) that can be referenced inside prim media to get it to play. I was, however, successful in getting youtube embedded videos to play through prim media. This isn't really that big a deal, there are already in-world TVs that do this. I just didn't realize how easy it was. My test object plays about 10 different youtube vides (hard coded for now) that are selectable on a dialog in-world. When someone selects a video from the dialog, everyone sees the video. So, if anyone knows of a shoutcast player that can be controlled through simple HTTP GET requests, this radio should be simple enough.
  22. Hmm, that's an interesting idea. I run SL in a window instead of full screen because I noticed how much it affects FPS. But I like the big fully screen view with all the window clutter behind it. I'll have to fiddle with screen rez on my 2nd monitor and see if I can do something similar. Thanks. :-)

You will really want to find a provider that works well with HTML-on-a-prim and is reasonably globally accessible. I'm afraid I don't know any.I think RDIO is multi-national but I'm not sure how wide-spread. 1) HTML-on-a-prim is rendered/displayed entirely client side (that is your local computer connects to the web server directly). So, in effect even though it looks like all the avatars are looking at the same web page at the same time, they are all connecting separately. In order for everyone to truely share the experience, you need to control all updates from the web page. This might be possible using a sort of wrapper page which updates all link whenever anyone makes a change (like pressing play). This would probably need to be something like the way Google Docs works where people see eachother's updates in real time. I've been fiddling with a much simplified version of the "everyone sees everyone else's updates" with HTML-on-a-prim. So far I have had mild success with some very VERY simple experiments. Nothing even close to being able to keeping a music stream synchronized.

  25. Some (possibly correct) answers: 1) If you deed the land to group, you will definitely get your objects returned when you enable auto-return if your objects aren't set to the same group. If you don't deed your land to group, I think your objects stay (as the owner of the land) but honest I can't remember for sure. All my land is group deeded to get the 10% group bonus. 2) Do you see lag being caused by physics? If so then your lanturns might be an issue. There's all sorts of reasons for lag. If you are having lag issues, you need to figure out why and what (if anything) you can do to reduce the lag. Note that some lag you cannot prevent.
