One of the issues that makes much mainland less desirable than it could be is lack of public roads and waterways. Residents cannot effectively address this because there is no guarantee that any resident-owned land will stay the same. It could be addressed by allowing residents to donate land for public roads and waterways. This is similar to what happens in RL, where a developer buys undeveloped land, builds roads, and sometimes waterways, and donates the roads to the local municipality, making them irrevocably public. Like RL developers, SL developers might be incentivized to build public facilities because it would increase the value of the adjacent land.

It would be really interesting to see an example of this kind of project documented.

I do agree that the lack of infrastructure, along with oddly sized and distributed parcels is a huge disincentive for purchasing abandoned land.
Unfortunately  it only takes one person using an area as a personal sandbox in which they abandon their half-finished, badly textured and generally hideous constructions to blight the landscape for some distance. This seems to happen more frequently in 'low rent' areas with a lot of abandoned land and adds to the downward spiral of lack of demand.

Having an area which does look cared for seems to influence the surroundings plots as well. This feels like real life urban re-generation, where investment in one area encourages more development and investment, which in SL means emotional and time investment also.
Taking on this type of project as a group with an established track record would tend to discourage Land 'flippers' and property speculators from setting up such a scheme as an exploit.

With regard to adding the laugh emoticon as a simple way of disagreeing with a post, I'm afraid this is not how this comes across to me. It appears lacking in respect and dismissive, especially when seen on a series of posts where no further explanation for the reaction is provided.  @Mollymews has obviously seen more context and may well be correct in her assumption, but there is a real danger that most people won't understand it in this way.

  2. Apart from very plain t-shirts, I can't imagine myself wearing all the colours in a fat-pack of anything. I would get bored seeing the same item over and over. What seems reasonable, is that it would be cheaper to buy the fat-pack than buy the items I might wear separately.
If someone feels the need to have every colour, then that doesn't feel like a fashion choice, it's looks like more of a collector impulse.
I do know that the actual choice of colours is a big influence in my choice of retailer, some are much better than others.

Maybe this is just me, but if I can't imagine a selection of clothes which would fit into a regular RL wardrobe then it's hard for me to warm to the items. I can get attached to my one pair of brown boots, but the idea of having fifteen different colours boggles my mind.
I do make hud based fatpack exceptions for those creators who I really like, and who make this offer very good value, and who do not offer singles..this is just their normal way of selling.
In this case I might just wear one colour and ignore the rest, and not have my inventory cluttered up with unwanted items.

If a creator does only offer basic colours in an expensive fatpack then that landmark goes in the trash. I would rather support another shop.

The fun for me is in creating a working wardrobe, within a chosen colour palette, and making it feel real.
I know that is not true for others, that making fashion pics is their joy, but even then, nobody likes to feel cheated or manipulated.

I've had a parcel on Jeogeot for a little over a year.  I've been on most of the mainland continents over the years, but I like the default ground texture on Jeogeot the best.  I don't have many neighbors - the largest (and closest) pulled up stakes a few weeks ago.   I emptied my parcel out earlier this month, and now have it mostly re-done with a different house and landscaping, though there's still a few more things I want to do landscaping wise.

How lovely this looks, Jeogeot is an interesting place to be, especially if you can find good (or no!) neighbours.

  4. Thank you for the suggestions so far.
I recognised the emergency response boat, and wonder if I already have this somewhere in my inventory, so on my list to try.
@Orwar's suggestion led me to a great deal of fun distraction at the creator's demo sim. The row boat suggested fitted my criteria, is very easy to steer and has lovely animations, so thank you for that idea.
I will check out the Tuff range today.

  5. I'm looking for a vehicle which looks and sounds nice, and is designed to work in river channels.

Something which is easy to steer, has slower speed settings available and which doesn't have excessive problems crossing sim boundaries.

I'm not too worried about space for passengers, though having one extra seat would be a bonus.

Cruise control is important to me as it reduces my hand problems, so canoes and row boats don't really work for me unfortunately.

    Any ideas welcome.

You mean while everyone in some countries were asleep.  It was near the end of my workday - roughly 3:30 pm SLT yesterday.

i.e.  It is currently 9:35 SLT.  The post currently shows as being created 18 hours ago:

(there isn't really a time of day when some countries are not sleeping)

Yes, I thought afterwards that my sense of humour might have seemed a bit obscure there, I was going to explain but the moment seemed to pass.
It was meant as light-hearted response to your saying that @Charlie Rowleywas hours behind noticing Patch's post! I was giving the general Euro excuse about not noticing things when we are asleep.

  7. The asian theme seems likely, and the open plan trads / wall tints idea has been floating around for quite a while. I actually did have a rogue tintable trad that escaped QA for a while,  and it was so much easier that shelling out the interior.
It is probably unlikely at this stage of development, but it would be grand to have some more definitely distinct themes, which are instantly recognisable for what they are supposed to be, even to those who are not familiar with US home styles. Clearer themes would help a lot for those wanting to decorate within the rules.
The 512 homes on 1024 plots have been very popular in the latest release. I hope this gets factored in to any future developments. Even putting the existing campers on larger plots might work, though I have my doubts about whether the team are really committed to producing  the unique style  of landscape that went with the original release, and that could be an issue for some.
Personally, I do like small houses on large plots, so a one room cabin would work for me! I found the log homes too large for one person, and as a consequence of their size on the plot they felt rather crowded together from my perspective.
Another thought is to sacrifice some building prims for the sake of having more space, and landscaping between plots. This is something that happens on private estates of course, and in my view it works well.

This post concerns the "BBB resident favoritism" and "Newbrooke slanty roof" issues and attempts to make constructive suggestions.

    1. If there is means by which a resident can obtain an extraordinary parcel in Bellisseria in compensation for service, please let us know where we can find the official Linden document that describes this process. If no such document exists, please create it.

    2. The covenant governing Linden Homes in Bellisseria is key to its success. After the stilt homes were released, the covenant was amended to cover stilt home related issues (e.g. "Privacy screens, fences, or other parcel perimeter barriers are not allowed on the water in the Stilt Home theme". Please further amend the covenant to enumerate Newbrooke related issues.

I would like to commend @Abnor Mole as the Linden who provides the most effective communication on these types of issues. (I have not been influenced by the fact that Abnor is good looking.)

I would like to agree with @syndi Pearl here and commend @Abnor Mole for his clear communication over the whole period of building Bellisseria. I may argue with some of the things he says, but this is because I feel able to understand what he says, and have a difference of opinion with the expectation of being treated with respect.

These are all questions that are just going to beg more questions and requests for more specifics. If the statement is "Please stay away from the edge if the cliff", the response shouldn't be "Well, how close exactly to the edge in millimeters can we go?"

We can spend more time enforcing the covenant, constantly looking out for those who want to push the boundaries to see how far they can go. That pulls resources directly from our ability to build and release homes. Or... we can ask people to use their better judgement and not to try to see how close to the cliff they can go and be upset when they find out the hard way. A good rule of thumb is if you're asking yourself if you're going to far, you probably already know the answer.

I think that shifting some resource towards better enforcement is a good idea, it improves the quality of the existing housing stock. I'm not sure if everyone shares the desire for thousands more homes with the same problems as before?

    Asking people to be reasonable only works when;

    a) they are here to be asked, most are not

    b) all people are capable of being reasonable

  10. I just read Patch's comments in the other thread discussing this and my understanding is, that this is about trying to be clearer about where the boundaries lie, and how we interpret the restrictions.
Going forward, if there are genuinely more resources put into policing infractions, then this is what will have the greatest effect on the feelings of unfairness that the current situation has created.
My view is, that residents new and old will take look around to see what others do, and use that experience to interpret the rules. That is the primary way that most people understand rules, by copying others, not by legally dissecting covenants.
If current residents have tested the boundaries then this is a completely understandable human reaction to a confusing lack of apparent consistency in applying the rules.
I personally, can more easily lose the creative builds, no matter how well done, if it means also getting rid of the hideous monstrosities which blight other parts of the continent.
If the thoughtful community focused builds are targeted and we still have to put up with smoke belching seventies disco traditionals, and so on then, I will be back to thinking that this project isn't really working as planned.

So the top photo is on theme but the roof that was returned is not? I feel like I'm in the twilight zone. I can't imagine that LL wants something like the photo above all over Newbrooke and isn't allowing a very tastefully done roof to be an add-on.  I feel like some people will be pushing the envelope just to see how much they can get away with just out of spite.

The way that the rules are policed is inconsistent.

  12. The question that occurs to me is, do the powers that be within SL actually care about the customer experience? Is there a corporate value to promote virtual community, or a more cynical view which values short term survival more?
Meanwhile, customers make the best of it, some doing so in a way which amazes me with their creativity and willingness to share.

I have found myself 'flipping' at times, not through land purchases, but with my views on certain behaviour as my relationship with SL changes.
When funds are low I feel more generous towards those 'sky tower' developments, a place to park with minimum cost and low need to be involved. I never actually rent one of those platforms though.
When I run out of ideas, and have made yet another ugly build, I am more inclined to be tolerant of some hideous monstrosity garbed in 2008 textures made by another user.
There are times when the world view of a 'land baron' seems perfectly reasonable, and other days when a socialist values based community would seem ideal.
Some years I am grateful that SL keeps finding a way to survive, and other times I am utterly frustrated by the toxic neglect and lack of planning which leads to the issues everyone has mentioned here.

It is not ok that parts of mainland have fallen into abuse, decline, and selfish exploitation. It is not ok that the powers that be have either no idea how to tackle it, or a lack of willingness to do so. This is despite the fact that I can't think of a way to do that either, without making considerable financial investment.
In this way virtual worlds mimic real life, and solutions take decades, never completely solve the problems, and end up in a tussle between our various needs to belong and selfish desires.

My rule number 1. When in the air: lock your floor.
That said, I always have a few spare floors right under my building platforms, because even with my rule number 1 I more than once made those falls. :D

What a great idea, I shall adopt this policy at once, and call it the Sid Nagy patented safety net :)  I wonder if we could add bounce for full effect?

  14. I wouldn't have a clue what was in or out of theme in Newbrooke, as I am unfamiliar with container homes. I'm not sure if any non forumites would know what these houses are supposed to be either.
This is different to liking, or not liking, the style. I actually do like them.
Therefore working out which addons may, or may not be acceptable might be a challenge, even for those residents who would like to stay within the rules.
I doubt the current level of enforcement will continue, so waiting a few months will solve most problems.
Playing 'guess what Patch is thinking' is always a losing game for me so I've given up the attempt.

  15. I guess once the newness wears off and the moles have moved on, then governing out of theme addons falls to the usual channels.
As the usual channels are usually overwhelmed, and only move quickly for serious issues then I guess people will be able to get away with all sorts of out of theme addons.
From my perspective that is an issue, but some people will prefer that.

Enter the tudor farmhouse with barn, sci-fi geo-dome and whole extra floor with helicopter launch pad mod.

  16. Winning felt like the endgame for me, it was the search and the forum banter that was so much fun.
I had my dream houseboat for about a week and I was more sad that it felt over than anything else.
Creating the map, the birth of a continent was so fascinating in the beginning, but now the process feels more focused on meeting volume targets and it is hard to be excited about new releases.
I am really grateful though for the experience, and feeling involved in Bellisseria early days.

  17. It's an imperfect system when there are few homes available. There are ways to time  your landpage visit to reduce the possibility of landing the same home (see Elena's reply above) but if you are looking for the same type of home you will see the same properties over and over. This is why some people time their moves to coincide with a new release as there will be more abandons in the pool.

@Nika Talajyou are right that they are starter homes. But when Bellisseria was new and I was a bit crazy with excitement, I said that I should live there in my first house for ever. It would not be a very good business.

I agree that Victorians was peak time. After that, the cloning came in with full force. I think the landscaping has missed something since then. Or it is my cycle of interest that was on the way down, and the cloning made it go faster.

@Mercedes Avon, I think you are right in that we got something modern, but not the modern we wanted. But I am sorry to say, after I googled container homes and I look at the images, then I try to compare it with the new theme and... I recognize some parts, but others not. Vertical brick ribs? Big roof overhangs? I do not think we got container homes either, but someones idea of container home with big roof overhangs and bricks added on.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am content. But not enthusiastic. They will do, I am going to try one despite what I have said. It took LL so long time to deliver a modern theme,  so I am going to use it while I am Premium.

I think a refreshment of the Traditionals is more exiting, especially if they do more than add individual colors for the rooms. I yearn for the originality of Old Bellisseria, and still regret the one I abandoned in Humansville.

The Victorians were the first regions to have cloned regions, so my moment of starting to detach was back then, even though I resisted.
It felt as if there was a large cultural shift, and the ongoing building plans were required  to be more cost efficient and speedily produced, and in the latter cases, more able to accommodate denser packing of homes.
Maybe this really was necessary in terms of survival of the project, but it sucked the joy out of it for me, unfortunately.
