  1. Ah yep - the Debit Permission not resetting on ownership change is a bug plain and simple. There is a reason why systems existed (at one point - not so easy to find the older example now) of a system which has a central object which others pull their balances from. Just because an object has operated a specific way for however long it did ... does not mean that what you've come to see as "expected behavior" was not - in fact - a bug. ETA: The item in question was Mystical Cookie's Global ATM - now no longer available.
  2. To go back to something from an earlier post of mine ... I have had people attempt to figure out who I am behind my Avatar. One runs a Blog (and did so to enforce some laughable policy of theirs). Two were from a third party Forum (now long gone, sadly). The first made me roll my eyes. The other two? I laughed as they were doing so in an effort to try and get me to back down/quiet down because they did not like my responses. Both of those latter two were banned (from a place known not to do so unless absolutely necessary). Of those three, two are still active here - despite only ever so thinly veiling their tactics when engaging with others. Imagine that! Small wonder I have my information set up the way I do, isn't it? All of them employ similar "debate tactics" as I've seen a handful use for this particular issue to stir the pot and foment distrust at the minimum.
  3. It does - each and every time a new avatar takes up the object. It should be clearing the Debit Permission flag each and every time this happens. There are exceptions to this - or were anyway. There was a kind of Debit Card/Bank system you could buy and use if you had Alts and wanted them to pool from a central Account.
  4. The long and short of this is that it was blown out of proportion by several users, continues to be blown out of proportion and being used to once more foster distrust (among other things). That is the reality of this. Newsflash for you: Scripted Agents (which have been around for as long as the Viewer has been Open Source, likely even before that) have been doing varied functions for quite some time. Some above board, others not so much. This one rattled a few people. This one is not the operation one ought to be concerned about. Scripted Agents properly marked as such ... are not what users ought to be concerned about. The ones that are not marked ... Are the concern. No, there is no way to identify them (not without catching actual users as collateral - something I'm personally unwilling to have happen). Those types have been around just as long. There is a reason for the warning concerning one's profile and putting personal information within it. Welcome to part of that reason. Advice has been given by more than just myself here. Advice and what should be a common sense approach. Take it or leave it but stop trying to solve a delicate problem with a nuclear device.
  5. My arguments are rooted in reality - what has been put forward thus far to "counter" them has been rooted in hyperbole at best. No one's actual private details were exposed. Beginning and end. An actual bad actor is not going to publish their data in such a public manner. Beginning and end. You are in control of how much data you place into your very public profile. Don't want it out there? Don't put it in there. My whole argument rests in what can/has actually happened as well as just how tempting a target a Second Life user is going to be. Here's a hint for you: You ought to be more worried about your financial data and being phished. Do not put data out there you do not want conflated with your RL self if you do not want it linked to your Second Life avatar. If someone manages to work it out anyway ... Well they have no way of knowing if they really have, now do they? In any event, just as I thought: No actual desire for any sort of actual discourse. Just shadow puppets, boogeymen and the usual dose of rampant distrustfulness disguised as genuine concern.
  6. About the normal conflation for some. If the Tilia data is ever hacked, there would need to be a compelling reason to then go after and compile the avatar/profile data together with external sources - a rabbit hole that does indeed drive some to overcompensate when it comes to how they view security and tends to make some start to jump at shadows.
  7. Ah yes, the usual tactic and why i do not often bother engaging: attempts to frame what I have very clearly stated as being something else. I stated exactly what I meant to state in my responses, nothing more and nothing less. If you're actually being sincere in looking for a discussion, try harder and veer away form such foolishness in the future.
  8. That's nice. Unless they're actively putting data into their profiles to link their Second Life account to their RL self, they have no reason to worry. At all. Outside of dedicated stalkers or bored children (this includes supposed adults that have the same sort of mentality) no one on the wider web is going to take the time to make a Second Life account just to harass/hassle/belittle such people. The worst that can happen is that someone finds their profile, puts it on a blog (or some other website) and disparages the avatar. The opinions of people who would do such a thing are worth less than nothing and should get only enough attention to see what they've done, shrug one's shoulders and move on. If it gets worse, see what options one can pursue (not many in the case of it being limited to an avatar within Second Life). As for the potential targets? Many are already taking the steps they need to, to keep their Second Life from being paired to their Real Life self - as many would have had to do in the first place in order to use Second Life in the manner described! The current situation hasn't changed anything whatsoever in regard to such outside of making it clear that anyone at all could have gotten that profile data. Anyone at all could have been (and could actually be) using said data surreptitiously this entire time, for any purpose whatsoever. Data that is useless by itself. Data that requires one to have linked it themself or to have had some unhinged type go and do it (been there, done that, rolled my eyes and batted the people away). Next?
  9. Second Life is not Facebook, the two do not exist for the same purposes nor do they present even remotely similar data. A Second Life avatar is not a real person despite having one behind the screen - there is no need to go to such lengths in keeping one's profile hidden. Furthermore there is nothing whatsoever preventing the listing of one's Facebook Profile within a search engine's results. You choose what is displayed to the general public. Something which was possible with the absolute abomination that was the Second Life Web Profile system - a system which should not ever have been put into production. If you want a Facebook experience, go use it.
  10. Some of the usual suspects that do not want to hear of nor read such things and refuse to accept that it does happen and should be avoided when/where possible. There is a time and place wherein adding in new tools will have outcomes that outweigh the potential for misuse/weaponization. This is not one of them.
  11. Debit Permissions have - in my experience - not persisted when an object was taken into Inventory and later rezzed back out. This is - as I understand it - by design to allow one to revoke those permissions in as simple a manner as is possible. The "bugged" bit here then, would be the opposite behavior - the object retaining Debit Permissions when taken into Inventory for any reason and then rezzed back out again.
  12. What you describe in your theory is exactly what we do not need - a "tool" that can be weaponized. Sadly it appears as those such suggestions may well be getting some traction (among others) - something we did not need whatsoever. Congratulations are in order for some ... One less reason to bother going anywhere.
  13. Such as the fact that some are being such? That a good portion of this is either blown entirely out of proportion? among some of the usual fear mongering (and worse)? Calling such out for exactly what it is is being "civil" and is being "constructive" - going around the drain with such perspectives is not constructive, it is not discussing any sort of issue whatsoever ... Point blank: If you want to waste your time engaging them, feel free to do so. do not pretend that everyone must do so and do not pretend those calling such BS out are "gaslighting", engaging in ad hominem or any other actually dismissive BS. There've been plenty responding to this thread (and the other, more specific ones prior) who have been willing to engage in actual discourse.
  14. I meant what I typed - unless you're set to not show up in the Web profile system or in a direct Search (through Linden lab's own systems) anyone outside of Second Life can find you easily enough. There is no option at present to prevent someone within the same Region as you, viewing your profile either - that latter being the case does not make the profile "private". So - Profiles have been viewable on the "Main Web" for quite some time, in one form or another. It has not caused Second Life to become less Adult. Nor will it.
  15. I mean exactly what I stated: Bot/Scripted Agents which do not have some flashy web page for you to go to and/or those using the current drama as cover for their shenanigans. Even before Linden Lab introduced the (now pretty much defunct) Web Profiles, one could search up a User through the Web. The form this took and the data presented have varied over time but the ability to do so has been around for some time. Unless a user has placed information anywhere (be it in SL or outside of it) linking their Second Life account to their real life self ... there's not a single thing for them to be concerned about. For those who have made such a link? I wonder why anyone would do such a thing and then complain.
  16. That's nice. Did I directly mention you as being one of them? No? Then perhaps don't make an assumption hmm? The reality (and truth of the matter) is often rather painful and one some do not like to admit. Point blank: The data that was presented was never presented as an actual tally of merchant income. Never. Anyone taking it that way ... Well that is on them. The data that was presented with regard to those figures is public facing data (sorry, no amount of claiming otherwise makes it private). Bots landing in your parcel on a daily basis? Use the available tools (which includes security scripts) to manage it. PIOF interfering with flying and boating? Oh noes! Without strict enforcement concerning Scripted Agent status being properly marked, there's not a single thing Linden Lab can do to truly keep actual bad actors from doing what they do. Tighten it down? Congrats, you've given some griefer types a new weapon to use, especially if Linden Lab adopts a "shoot first and maybe ask questions later" approach. This is a "problem" that has existed for quite a long time, with the same methods to combat it which have worked well enough. If you're going to be concerned, focus on the ones that don't have a flashy website, that don't tell you anything whatsoever. Be concerned about the ones using this kerfluffle as a handy cover to annoy and grief others (as has already happened to at least one other user here). ETA: As far as the Adult Picks and such go? Well if one is that concerned why in the world would you put them into your profile to begin with? They are publicly viewable even if you've opted to not show in LL's own Search!
  17. Elon did it because he had to create a scapegoat (among other things) to try and excuse his way out of an acquisition he never really wanted to make (among attempting to excuse many, many other things). When that did not work out, he went through with said acquisition and doubled down on his rhetoric. Frankly this entire thread is an oh so lovely study point for a similar enough phenomena ... And frankly yes, people are being paranoid.
  18. There is nothing to keep tabs on. Feel free to waste your time if you wish.
  19. Second Life on Steam died quite some time ago. Any "change" registered by such a website is absolutely meaningless. Second Life is not going to return to nor be on Steam. Move on and let it go.
  20. Funny. .. Seems they decided that cutting it 'close to' the roll date was ample enough warning for letting people now there's a new version. So yep - a comment was made on the forum.
  21. I'll make this clearer for you: You can afford to drop that much - period. Month to month, once every few months, once a year ... I. Don't. Care. You. Can. Afford. It. Congratulations! Doesn't matter if you had to save a bit/refrain from making smaller purchases or not - you were able to afford plunking that much down on the transaction! Meanwhile you've got some here who have to budget their bills on less than a thousand a month (less than the $1200 or so Minimum Wage before taxes and such) who manage to actually afford to do tings on here including dumping small amounts into our L$ balances (sometimes over a period of a few months) .... I'll leave it there and leave this entire thing here as well ... Either you get it or you do not. Either way? No sympathy from me on this.
  22. You assume I did not read what you posted - I read it. It changes nothing outside of your making an assumption concerning those who make smaller purchases. Once more - when you're budgeting on less than US Federal Minimum Wage per month, come back to complain about the fee increase. Until then, there's nothing you can say that isn't an excuse or that I really want (or care to) listen to on the matter.
  23. If you're capable of buying a hundred dollars or more of L$ at a time you are not living paycheck to paycheck. If you're doing that while having actual money concerns, it is well beyond time to examine your spending habits and consider not spending a hundred dollars (or more) a pop on such things. If you're not going to examine your habits or going to come up with some other excuse to list off ... Don't bother. If you're pulling in enough that dropping a hundred or more into a Linden Dollar balance is something you can do from month to month you are frankly much better off than you realize you are. Boy oh boy do I wish i could afford to toss that much at my Linden Dollar balance on a monthly basis ...
