  1. Well, let's see. I'd come from spending a week or so in Active Worlds which was as dead as the proverbial dodo, so i already knew how to move/speak etc. That was my only experience of virtual worlds . I logged into SL at some welcome area or other on 29th July 2009. I don't recall exactly what i did but i think i fiddled with my avie a bit, using the sliders. I also remember the horrible non-prim hair. The second time i logged in, I remember looking round frantically for someone to greet me or offer help as i'd somehow acquired an orange skin without my knowledge. In the end, i asked for help in Local Chat and a guy took pity on me and also showed me my first free clothing in or near that same welcome area. Attired in my new togs, I quickly found the destination guide and left that place, never returning to any of the traditional newb areas. Looking back, i was quite independent -- too nervous to speak to anyone, but off on my own and exploring. :smileyhappy: Next day or a couple of days later, i tried to modify my avie to resemble my RL self. To this day i have no idea why i thought this was a good idea. At least i was no longer orange. Because i'd come from the dead zone that was Active Worlds, i hadn't really grasped the fact that people actually owned properties etc., in SL, and whilst i was inside someone's house innocently exploring, i was pulled up for trespassing by a security guard. Fortunately, he could see i was new and he was very helpful. He gave me lots of tips and my first (very simple) prim hair. This was on Enchantment Island, the first place i ever visited. Then i discovered shopping. :smileyvery-happy:
  2. So the bus that hit my partner the other day was likely one of these vehicles? :smileymad:
  3. I think you look great, Marianne. I'm also impressed that you don't use the 'glued together' cleavage layer when topless. I laugh at the many many female avies who insist on wearing that layer on topless beaches, etc. Not only does it look unrealistic, it makes the owner of said boobage look kinda clueless... YMMV, of course. :-)
  4. I've noticed that since the advent of the web-based profiles the number of characters one can use in one's picks is greatly reduced. Am i the only one disappointed? Some of us enjoy being a little creative with our profiles and liked having the extra space in which to write. I appreciate that 'picks' were not originally intended for us to write our own text in. However, 90% of residents do use it for that purpose. Might there be a chance we can get the old number of characters back in Picks, or is there a workaround? Many thanks if anyone can help with this.

  6. Out of curiosity, how did you arrive by your special rank of 'member', Knowl? :smileyhappy:
  7. thanks. i'll try that. i did look before, but seems i need to include the b-word. *looks round cautiously*
  8. Yes, i thought Vitamen would be the place to go, but it seems their stuff is just layers. But i'll try Jungle, too. Thanks!
  9. Ok, i'll put this as delicately as i can. I'm in a well known male underwear store (I don't know if i'm allowed to name the store or not). On the promo pics of boxer shorts etc., there's a distinct bulge which i do not think is drawn on. However, when i click on the box containing the merchandise, there are only clothing layers. Can one can get male underwear with a prim bit that goes on top or underneath the clothing layer? I had an idea that one could. I'm trying to find something realistic looking for my partner. Thanks.
  10. When i get that problem i know it's time to clear cache. That seems to fix it every time. In the pic i posted on the dancing thread you can see my bodice is a little blurred. It was that time again!
  11. She would only give me a half-smile :smileywink:
  12. Marianne, you are beyond awesome. Now i have no excuse to be stretching my hats until they snap. Thank you! :smileyvery-happy:
  13. My understanding is that Drowsy will be back in a couple of months or so. I'm sorry, i can't remember where i heard this but i know the info seemed reliable at the time.

I rename it to include the name of the hat it is for too Oh dear. That word unlink always throws me into a mild panic. Still, i can keep making copies until i get it right, right? I'm going to try this. :smileyhappy:
  15. Carole Franizzi wrote: You won't like this but the trick is to buy mod hair and edit lock by lock. Boring, I know. But it gives you best results and you're not stuck with one style or two. If possible buy mod packs of different shades of the same style. That's what I used to do and I'd set aside the least favourite shade as my "hat" hair. Ok, normal boring i can live with. It's more a question of if i mess it up and then have to keep doing it over and over until i get it right, each time using a new copy of the original hair. That's the really boring part!

Loren Twine wrote: I copy one of my hairstyles, move, shrink, rotate or smack a clear texture on bad prims, and keep it in the same folder as the hat.* The above is what I intended on doing, I usually forget so when it's time to use the hat, I have to quick-mod in a panick. ^_^' Ok. I'm not very good at this sort of stuff. Am i able to simply delete a stray prim or two? Thanks.
  17. I have lots of tips! Poetic Colours provides a free pair of eyes to new players under 30 days old. It's in a box outside the front of the store. Sweet Hairs gives a free (female) hair to new players, and you get a huge selection to choose from. If you've seen their hairs you'll not want to miss this one. Sassy has a box near their MM board which contains a complete avie with hair, clothing, etc, for females under 30 days old. I believe that Twittery Birds also has outfits for new avies, male and female. (Their clothing is a little on the eccentric side). Exodi recently started giving out free avies to new players, and their skins are pretty good. :smileyhappy: I'll post again if i think of any more.
  18. Does anyone know where one can purchase hair to wear under a hat? I'm NOT looking for hair with the hat attached; rather, i need hair that doesn't stick out when i place a hat on top of it. I did find one hair that is specifically 'hat hair' but it's only available in limited colours, and it's not very attractive. :smileysad: What do you suggest? Should i simply shrink my head?
  19. The tip that has worked best for me lately is the changing of eyebrows. If that doesn't work, i'll put on a folder of saved skin/shape/hair/eyes/clothing. If that doesn't work, i'll do the test avie thing. One way or another, i'm coming back. :smileytongue:

  21. Venus Petrov wrote: The Calas Galadhon sims have a hot air balloon ride. Since these are 10 attached sims, it may be the ride you are thinking of. ETA: There is also a boat rezzer (they supply the boat) on the Calas Galadhon sim here. (re: your other thread) http://slurl.com/secondlife/Calas%20Galadhon/61/122/21 Wow, these sims have everything! I'm sure i'll have a lot of fun exploring thereabouts. Thanks. :-)

  23. Cate Foulsbane wrote: Go to Starboards Yacht Club, Hollywood sim, and pick up a free Om's box of rez zones. It's outdated, but has enough active zones to keep you busy while you learn. The Blake Sea is huge and connects the United Sailing Sims in the east and the Nautilus sims in the west. Plenty of Yacht clubs and marinas..things to do. Hours, days, weeks of sailing .. it's all yours to explore. Look at your World Map, find Nautilus continent and explore the whole area. And contact me inworld and I will give you a bundle of LM's. Oh, i will do! Thanks so much, Cate. This is great. :-)
