Since most EULAs indicate that such assets are only to be used within Second Life, naming the new world Second Life would automatically legitimize their use in that new world. _________________________________________________________________________________ Edited to change the font so it is obvious where the quote ends This was talked about way back towards the beginning of the thread. As the TOS of August changed the game The Lab has the legal right to transfer the goods to the new grid whatever its name. The TOS (haven't read it lately and we no longer need to OK it when it is changed so who knows what it says now) certainly read that way as it was argued over and over 6-8 months ago and many lawyers agreed -- that The Lab could sell our stuff with no monetary remuneration OR even attribution (as in strip our names off). Now there are some darker scenarios that I came up with this morning but I would just as soon not write those here. You are smart folks (well, some of ya are *wink*) and can most likely see the possibilities. I was talking about EULAs, in which case, what the ToS allows for or not is inconsequential. Say I bought a texture with a EULA which restricts its use to only within SL... should the new platform be named anything else, regardless of whether or not its a LL product, uploading that texture there would be a violation of the EULA to which I agreed. LL, as per the ToS, can do whatever they wish with such content... I, on the other hand, having agreed to much more restrictive terms, could not. I don't necessarily believe that LL will name the new platform Second Life, I'm simply acknowledging the advantage of them doing so for those of us who wish to live up to the licenses to which we've already agreed. ...Dres

Of course, the difference now is that I know how much functionality that TPVs can provide and would surely be disappointed by any less. But that in itself wouldn't be a deal breaker. ...Dres

I vaguely remember you implying it in a previous post, though I must admit that I've read so many posts in the last few days that my brain is suffering from information overload and could very well have gotten it wrong. ...Dres

While I probably wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire, I must commend you for bringing up something which has been on my mind for days now. It might serve LL very well to name the new world Second Life and re-brand the one we have now with one of the names which you've suggested. I believe naming it such would go a long way toward enabling people to accept that, though it may be new and improved, it is actually based on the very same concept as the world which they know and love. Not only that, but it would quell the fear that the textures and templates which are compatible with the new platform, won't be portable because if EULA issues. Since most EULAs indicate that such assets are only to be used within Second Life, naming the new world Second Life would automatically legitimize their use in that new world. Of course, when considering this, one must give thought to the "stigma" which is attached to the name/brand Second Life... but, I seriously doubt that re-branding it would wipe that stigma away, since every time it gets mentioned, it will forever be associated with SL anyway. Plus, if you ask me, the name Second Life is about as perfect a name for a virtual world as can be. By comparison, High Fidelity is woefully inferior. ...Dres

  10. Alright Ebbe, I've been reading a whole hell of a lot of what other people have been writing about this (what I consider to be) exciting development and, after careful consideration, have come up with the one thing which would make my migration to this new platform extremely uncomfortable. Of course, I only speak for myself when I say this, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who would feel this way... I know that you've already said that it's important that we're able to transfer our identity to the new world, but my identity, for me, is more than just my name or friend list or inventory or $L balance. This is me... This is what represents me in the virtual world. This is the image which I've created over the last almost six years by tweaking my shape and carefully choosing elements created by others. I may not be much of an original content creator, but I assure you that putting this avatar together was definitely an exercise in creativity. I love my SL home and my SL land; I adore the people on my friend list and I treasure many of the things in my inventory, but none of them compare to the emotional investment in which I've made to my avatar. I've been to other virtual worlds... Inworldz, Open Sim, Cloud Party, Blue Mars... I just never felt comfortable there for the simple fact that I couldn't look anything like what I thought of as myself. Could I have gotten over it, had I have given myself a chance to do so?... possibly. But, I'm more than certain that, should I had been able to enter those new worlds in a form with which I was familiar and emotionally invested, I probably wouldn't have left them as quickly as I did and would have, at least, tried to judge them on thier own merit once I got there, rather than have left them because I simply couldn't connect with my avatar the way I do in SL. Emotions can be a very powerful motivation. If you ask me, emotional investment is the very thing that has enabled Linden Lab to keep SL alive for as long as it has. My suggestion to you would be to capitalize on the emotional investment of your users by pandering to it. With that in mind, here's my idea... make legacy avatars portable to the new platform from the get go. That way, it creates the illusion of using one's current SL avatar to explore the new world as their old avatar self.... in which they've got an emotional investment. Yes, I'm suggesting that you enable the use of the old antiquated avatar base in the new world... yeah, it's ugly... but it's familiar. And, if your new avatar system is so much better (which I'm sure it will be), I'm certain that people will start adopting it in droves, once they get there and can see the difference. Why else would mesh body parts be such the rage nowadays? ...Dres ETA: I'm also willing to do without animated mesh penises... for a few months at least.

  13. WickedWanda1956 wrote: The problem with that course of action is if there are more young people like my daughter and not like us. My daughter is CONSTANTLY on World of Warcraft and she tells me that people there are forever making fun and laughing at all of us, Second Lifers. I can't even repeat some of the jokes they have said in WoW about us. Her feeling is that people of her generation (25-35) are more into games like WoW then what the "old" people (like me) are into. Actually if someone can give me a counter arguement to her I would appreciate it. Tell your daughter that while they're making fun and laughing at us, we're too busy enjoying ourselves to make fun and laugh at them because of their lack of the determination and imagination necessary to set their own goals and entertain themselves... therefore, having to rely upon someone else to hand those things to them on a plate. ...Dres

I apologize if I assumed from your post that you were drunk in RL, but your post seemed to indicate you were. Even so, I stand by what i posted, other than you were drunk. Obnoxious behavior, whether drunk or sober is not tolerated in many clubs. As a woman, my piece of heaven is being able to go someplace without being harassed , hit on over and over or having some one try to involve me in drama. I can't blame a guy for trying, if they aren't obnoxious about it or hand me some cheesy line. If i say I'm not interested in the offer or some one's drama, nothing a any one can say to convince me otherwise will make me interested and if they continue I block them. However I may still report them to the staff so that someone else doesn't have to deal with them. There are clubs that tolerate just about anything, you should go to those if that is the atmosphere you want. Being clean and sober are two entirely different things. As such, I'm pretty sure that you read their statement about drunkenness and cleanliness incorrectly, which probably wasn't difficult to do considering the state if intoxication through which they're trying to write. ...Dres

  18. I just finished reading and responding to a thread about this very topic at SLU and I have to say that coming back here and reading this discussion is like going back to kindergarten where little children just want to slap each other in the face as opposed to having a cogent conversation about the topic at hand. It's no wonder that Ebbe would prefer to interact over there rather than he would here. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to blame those who are obviously discussing that in which they are emotional invested. I actually blame LL for chasing off anyone who might have had something thoughtful and pertinent to add to the level of conversation here. Also, know that I'm not at all trying to absolve myself of my own behavior. For far too long, most of my replies in this forum consist of comments about the actions of people who I consider either delusional, overly emotional or completely out of their minds. I'm not necessarily ashamed of myself for doing so, but more so discussed by the fact that I now feel as if that's all that's left worth doing here any longer. Perhaps it's time for me to take my leave of this place and move on to less crap-laden pastures. ...Dres (Should I decide to do so, there are certain people with whom I shall greatly miss interacting... My question is, if you adore FS so, why remove it without trying to figure out what has gone wrong with it all of a sudden? FS has a great support team which could help you figure out why it's not working as it should be... you just need to join the group and ask for help. If you would let us know what the specific symptoms are that started happening and a bit of info about your system, someone here may be able to help you as well. I mean, if you don't like the official viewer simply because it's not FS, then why not try to get FS to work instead of switching to something you will find less satisfactory, just because it's not FS? 22. Phil Deakins wrote: What are the chances of taking your own advice, eh? I would have to say they're very slim, considering the fact that the only advice I've given in this thread was to Tex, simply because I don't feel as if he has any obligation to justify his behavior to you or anyone else. And since I haven't tried justifying my behavior to anyone, my taking of that advice would be entirely unnecessary. As far as the rest of your reply, I've already told you that further discussion between us about such matters would be fruitless, therefore, I see no point in even acknowledging it. ...Dres
