  1. I have yet to see any sort of list that says which combination of graphics card, OS type and Viewers are capable of seeing Shadows. What do we know works? What do we know does NOT work? If someone wanted to upgrade their video card today and be able to see shadows, which ones are certain to work, and on which OS platforms? What viewer do they have to use, and whjat tricks are needed to make it work? And why is it so difficult to find a source for this information? All I know so far is than not one of my Macintosh or Windows computers can see Shadows, even though my two best systems (A Mac Pro Tower and a Win XP server-class system) both have quad-core processors, with graphics cards that get 40+ FPS at fully maxxed out graphics settings. Short of buying a brand new computer with the most expensive graphics card possible to cram into it, what else can see shadows in SL?
  2. The viewer codebase is complicated enough as it is. Much as I would like to use only one tool to build in SL, I don't think adding a bunch of code that LL has no expertise in would be a benefit to the users.
  3. What displays for Creator name and Owner name is the display name, followed by the actual username in parenthesis. And yes, it is dynamic. When you change your Display name, it updates on every item you created or own on the grid, as soon as that item is viewed. For example "Porter (Starchaser Webb)"., where Porter is the display name. Or "Ceera's Testing Alt (Ceera) as an example of a newer-format single username. V1 users see only the Username ("Starchaser Webb", in my example), just as anywhere else, or "Ceera Resident" as an example for the new single usernames.
  4. Supposedly that is "Basic" mode in Viewer 2. But LL hasn't yet figured out what beginners really need as a minimal, "light" client. They cut out too much, like access to inventory.
  5. Bad? No. Most girls would hate having such a limited wardrobe, but how many guys do you know that you never see them in anything but the same type of jeans and very similar-looking shirts? For a guy, I guess it is okay, if you have a 'look' that works for you. You don't have to be a clothes horse. But SL makes it a lot easier and cheaper to have a huge wardrobe.
  6. I came here because a friend had started spending all their RP time here, and I missed them on the text-based RP forums were we used to meet. I came here to continue to RP with their character, and that friend is still my SL Partner today, more than 5 years later.
  7. Before I turned my Feeds and notifications off, I already had a weeks worth of stuff accumulated on my Home pages, from Friends already using this. (Specifically from one friend who loves it, and the replies others made to her stuff. None of my other friends use it, apparently). After I turned off my Feeds and Notifications, I went back several times, and had several more clusters of posts in my Home page, and several notifications on my notifications tab updating me on a feed that I commented on, one time, to let that aforementioned friend know she was spamming all her friends. Not one of those messages was of any value to me. Even if that friend posted something I did care about, like info on a special event she was going to host, it would get lost in the wail of irrelevant spam, and never get read. And when this starts getting popular, if it ever does, that home page will be completely unmanagable for anyone with more than a handful of friends. I'm leaving mine off, thanks, and deleting what accumulates there.
  8. It's being rolled out right now, along with Mesh. Be patient, there's a lot of sims to update.
  9. Well, even if you never do anything social or intimate with that account, it still puts you at a disadvantage, because you're giving out your real name, and 99% of those around you are not doing that. If your business thrives and people know that's your real name on display, that's one less barrier to someone who might try to steal funds from your account. If this was a business-only grid where everyone logged in with their real name, it wouldn't matter. I wouldn't do it in an environment where most others remain anonymous.
  10. So that means: For objects without scripts: Server Weight = 1 + 1/2 * number of prims in linkset 200 prim object = 1 + 0.5*200 = 101 PE For objects with scripts: Server Weight = 1 + 1 * number of prims in linkset 200 prim object = 1 + 1*200 = 201 PE That's a pretty hefty penalty for adding just one script! 100 prims? WHY? Why does adding one script to a 200-prim object cost so much more than the exact same script in a 1-prim object? That makes absolutely no sense to me at all.
  11. HD Pomeray wrote:... I see that single objects, non-linked meshes, are probably not a good choice for mesh use. I see that objects larger than 10 meters are not a good candidate for mesh use. I see that linking meshes to regular prims and sculpts is probably not a good use for mesh. I think given the limitations of rigged meshes in this release, that meshes are probably not a good choice for clothing or complete avatars that need to be clothed. ... Doesn't that pretty much eliminate all uses of mesh? They aren't good unlinked. They aren't good if you link them to prims or sculpties either. They aren't good for big stuff, or for avatars that need clothes... That doesn't leave much that they ARE good for, does it? For my own part, I've gone to the sidelines for a while to wait for the soccer riot to die down. The 'rules' aren't clear enough yet for my liking, nor are the concepts of 'best practices' laid out clearly anywhere that I can see. I have a ton of tools that I could use to make Mesh stuff, but taking the time to learn to do that seems pointless until the framework for how it should be done and what it should be used for is clearer. It's like firing a gun before you can clearly see the target. I'll eventually do mesh products. But not until I have a better understanding of how they can effectively and properly be used.
  12. Crim Mip wrote: Fortunately, LL listened for a change and added an off button so you can stop anyone from posting to or viewing your profile wall. I encourage taking advantage of this button to send a message that perhaps LL might save a lot of time and money if they ask the users before developing a useless and unneeded feature like that in the future. Unfortunately, they only added a privacy setting for turning your own profile's feed and notifications off. The Home page still gets spammed with your friend's idle chit-chat, and if you ever commented on anyone else's feed, the notifications tab in your profile shows you updates for all those feeds. And every profile you try to look at for anyone who hasn't diabled their profile's feed shows you their feed, before you can see ANYTHING else in their profile. Those who want to use it are welcome to do so. But please, LL, let those of us who do NOT want to use it have a way to turn it off completely, and never see it at all.
  13. om Piers wrote: Ceera, I had a thought. Why not just bookmark your Profile and go directly to that (e.g. my "Profile" page is https://my.secondlife.com/om.piers, but my home page is https://my.secondlife.com/). Then you never have to see the Home page clutter again. As far as I can tell, the one and only purpose of the Home page is to hold the Feed clutter. That is fine, for people who only have one or two accounts. I have several, and every time I log out and log back in as a differerent account, I have to waste time to navigate past that worthless Home page again. Every time I want to look at anyone else's profile now, I'll see that stupid 'feed' tab and have to waste clicks and time navigating past the spam to the actual profile info I wanted to read. Yes, It's only one extra click. Per change of login. Per profile you look at... Every time... It's like many of the other counter-productive changes in V2. Things that used to be possible with a single click now take many more clicks, to do the same function, as you needlessly tunnel down through sub panes, and back up, and back down again, for things you used to be able to do on a single screen, with one click per action. "Oh you can still do it, with a few more clicks." doesn't cut it. That 'few more clicks multiplies with every change and action, and soon becomes very counter-productive.
  14. With Firestorm: Text chat is not castrated to a 512 character limit, like V2 arbitrarily reduced it to, but can still be up to 1024 characters at a tilme, like V1. The local text chat window, if torn off, still has a text entry field that moves with it, unlike V2, that forces you to go back to the bottom of the screen to type your chat. You can tear off every one of the sidebar panes, and they remain torn off, and don't force anything back to the sidebar, where V2 forces a number of things to appear in the sidebar even if you have a torn off instance open! Most of the bug reports or function loss reports from V2 are fixed in Firestorm, while the V2 team at LL ignored them. For example, it's just as easy to update Friend permissions in Firestorm as in V1.
  15. Oh, you can turn off the "Feed" tab all right. Look at my profile there. That's done by going to Privacy settings and setting "Feed" to "Nobody". I'm talking about the page you get when you log in to my.secondlife.com, or click the "Home" link there. That feed is every last bit of drivel from every Friend that you have! And you can NOT turn that mess off.
  16. Bent Luik wrote: Well it won’t work for me, I tried I don’t know how many times and it is still the same as what dear Mr./Ms. Someone Linden set it to. So if this MyFaceTwits stuff keep getting more and more in Second Life I guess my SL days are numbered. @ Ceera Murakami. I use IE and Win Vista. @ Void Singer. That didn't help either, but thanks for your help :smileyhappy: I tried with IE and Win XP, and sure enough, I can't change the privacy settings with that browser. They revert right back! Try Safari or Firefox. This isn't the first time LL's done a change that broke functionality for IE users, and likely won't be the last.
  17. No. LL only allows one Payment Method to be in effect at a time. What is worse, every time you disassociate your PayPal account (like to switch temporarily to a credit card that has more funds available),it burns one of five lifetime allowances for using your Paypal, ever, for any account, as payment info.
  18. OK. I've had a business PayPal account since well before SL existed, zero complaints, never used eBay at all, and I have a BBB Class A rating as a business. If I see this show up in my PayPal account, causing holds on my incoming payments from SL or anywhere else, when my income stream is mostly for payments for intangible services, I'm going to be very unhappy.
  19. Lexie Linden wrote: Well, I like it! :matte-motes-big-grin: Since notifications can be turned on and off, it is very easy to simply ignore it if you don't want to use it. That's what is so great about SL imo. There is something for pretty much for everyone. What's the saying?... "Variety is the spice of life". That's fine for you, Lexi. Some people like playing Polka music 24x7 at full volume on a jam box on their apartment balcony too. But that doesn't mean their neighbors want to listen to it! PLEASE give us a way to opt out completely from this! Don't clutter my profile with a useless "home" page that will be nothing but a landfill of chat spam that I don't ever want to see. Yes, I can keep it from spamming my IM's and my e-mail, IF I OPT OUT. I can't keep it from filling my profile with spam on that "home" page. Right now, every time I log in to my.secondlife.com, that "home" page is the first screen I get, even though I have disabled every Feed option abvailable to me. I can't do anything I went there for without first navigating out of that landfill to the About page. I suppose I could just delete everyone on my Friends list. Is that what it will take to have a useful profile with no unwanted clutter? Would it kill you to give us an OFF switch?
  20. But even if you uncheck all six types of notifications, and set your own Feed to "Nobody", your Home tab in your profile still gets spammed with every feed post from every Friend that you have. No way to shut THAT off.
  21. Bent Luik wrote: Does anything work for other people, it don’t work for me. I get the profile but when I change anything in the Privacy tab ( I tried to set the feed to nobody) it change back next time I look, I don’t have a save button on the Privacy tab. And nothing on the Profile tab works. What web browser are you using, and on what OS? Works fine for me with Safari on Win XP.
  22. Not certain this applies across the board for everyone. I cash out monthly, and there's no indication on my PayPal account that a hold has ever been applied to my incoming funds from LL.
  23. *Sigh* Even if you turn off your own Feed (set privacy to Nobody), and uncheck all 6 Notification options, that "Home" page still get spammed by every Friend that you have who uses this so-called 'feature'. Where is the OFF switch, PLEASE?
  24. Incidentally, even though I set my own Feed to "Nobody" for every account I have, and unchecked and opted out of every "Notification" from those feeds, my "Home" page in my profile is STILL getting spam from any Friend that chooses to use this so-called 'feature', and I CAN NOT TURN IT OFF!. I can't even post a reply back to them to tell them to stop spamming all their friends, wuthout first re-enabling the Feed for myself! It looks like I can, but there's no save/send button if you have your own feed disabled. So my new name for it is "Landfill". It's just an endless pile of garbage that I don't want and can't get rid of!
  25. Keli Kyrie wrote: Ceera Murakami wrote: Spam. Because that is all it is to most of us. More spam, in our profiles, e-mail and IM's, unless we opt out of this inanne idea. I've opted out of the feed (set it to Nobody in privacy settings) and unchecked all SIX notification checkboxes, for every one of my accounts. But it is just like hanging out with your friends and chatting in local but you do not need to be logged into a Viewer to do it. More like having your Friends barge in on you, any time of day or night, hanging out arouhnd you, whether you want them around or not.
