  1. Both you and @Eddy Vortexhave made really important points. This isn't just "academic." It isn't a game, and it's not about virtue signaling or any other such nonsense. This matters to real people for very real reasons. These people are armed for a reason: they want to literally, physically hurt or kill those who are the targets of their hate. And that includes blacks, Jews, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and women. They represent a real and present danger to actual people. And, indeed, to American democracy itself. No, a sale item in SL isn't going to kill anyone or tip the balance. But at some point you have to draw a line over which you will not let hate and violence step.
  2. And those who don't care are welcome to skip this thread. They can cancel -- er, sorry, put me and Pixie and whoever else on ignore. That is, again, their right. Or, they can make their case and try to demonstrate that I am wrong. So far, no one has come close to doing that. In fact, the more I've learned about this merchant, the more I am convinced he knows exactly what he is doing. The key point, again, is that it is a discussion, with everyone able to make a contribution if they wish, and determine for themselves how they feel. That is what a forum is for. I'm not going to get into the "both sides" thing, however. I'm not American either: the Proud Boys have literally been banned from Canada as a terrorist organization, and I imagine this one wouldn't be welcome here either. But i don't care that it's not in my backyard, anymore than I am indifferent to the recent terrorist attack in Denmark. It still matters because people are people everywhere. If you think it's fine and dandy to signal your support for a group of armed, racist thugs, that is your choice. I am not prepared to shrug off the vileness that this group represents, nor pretend it doesn't matter merely because it's happening somewhere else.
  3. There is a tone from some people here as though what is being proposed is some sort of nefarious scheme to "cancel" or "ban" someone. Although the subject is "political," it's not really, in effect, all that much different from arguments about whether "Maitreya sucks," or "Kupra is unrealistic." It's not an interpersonal dispute, nor is it slander. It's a discussion about the nature, meaning, and intention of an item offered publicly for sale. Pixie and others have presented their views, with evidence, on this, suggesting that the maker is consciously aligning himself with an extreme right wing and violently militant group. I have been convinced that this is so. And so I will not be patronizing this store. Others disagree, and have presented their perspective. They are of course free to do so, and free to spend their money at this store if they wish. That's how this works. No one gets banned or slandered. Rather, viewpoints with evidence are expressed, and people coming to this thread can read those, and make up their own minds. There's no coercion or force -- people will decide for themselves. Which is how it should be. So, please stop suggesting that this is some sort of kangaroo court, and that summary execution awaits the "victim." That's not what is happening. Consider the evidence. Consider where you stand on extremist right wing militias, maybe. Make up your own mind, and choose your own course of action. It's that simple.
  4. The "ok" sign has been coopted as a right wing "secret hand sign." The article Pixie also posted explains it.
  5. I have no idea if this creator is a "racist person." He may simply know that there is a market for this kind of thing. And if so, I find that rather disturbing as well. But I AM now convinced he knows full well what he's doing, and is consciously catering to a target market that is either racist, or not clever enough to realize that that is the actual nature of this group, and groups like it. I don't want him "banned" or "cancelled" or "shamed." No one here has named him nor even, directly, the store. I have simply noted that I will not spend money on a merchant who consciously caters to this kind of extreme right wing audience. And I am grateful to Pixie for alerting me to this, so that I don't inadvertently patronize a merchant who makes things representing a violent and extremist political viewpoint -- whatever his views.
  6. I'm sorry, this is . . . garbled. Seriously, I'm not being difficult. What do you mean?
  7. My choosing not to buy from a particular vendor for any reason is not "cancelling" them. It is, in fact, choosing to employ the only tool I have available under capitalism: my right not to spend my money on things or people I don't like. You are entirely free to patronize this merchant: no one is stopping you, or even trying to. I'm sure you'd look lovely and very manly in an Hawaiian shirt and tactical vest, Alwin! And it's on sale! Go ahead, make a statement. It's your right!
  8. And the Trump banner? And the "ok" sign? They were accidents too? Coincidences? Again, this is literally how dog whistles work. I actually don't necessarily blame FLF for this, although I'll be sending a note card along to suggest they be a bit more watchful next time. As for someone I might meet wearing tactical at, say, a club? Almost certainly not someone I'd want to know anyway.
  9. Ahhhh. I missed that. Thanks Pixie. Yeah . . . I'm pretty satisfied now that we know where this person is coming from. Yikes.
  10. I have a few hairs that are like this, sized in "A," "B," and "T" or something equally unhelpful. And no notecard explaining.
  11. Hairbases with names like "Satin Night" or "Chocolate Marshmallow." Ugh. TELL ME WHAT COLOUR IT IS! "Dark Black" is much more helpful!
  12. Who suggested it was? Or that it should be? I have said neither. What I am suggesting is that producing Trump banners is a pretty good indication of where this particular merchant's political sympathies lie, and that it is therefore more likely that he fully knew what he was doing when he put this set up for sale. And for that reason I have no intention of ever buying anything from his company. (I don't think I have in the past, although I'm pretty sure I've demoed some boots and shirts from there.) If a dog whistle about an extremist right wing militia doesn't bother you, then go ahead and purchase his stuff. That's your right, and I have no desire to take it from you. I don't support bans, or call for them, and never have, for a variety of reasons, including a dislike of censorship, worries about slippery slopes, etc. And it's also rather handy knowing exactly who the NeoNazis are.
  13. The running joke on Twitter about this seems to be . . . . . . That it's the first time he's pulled out of anything. Ba dum ba!
  14. Ulysses is certainly possible, but even more so Finnegan's Wake, which is an entire tissue of awful puns and neologisms (and in my view entirely unreadable). Chaucer does indeed use a lot of scatology, and quite explicit sexuality, but he's not guilty of that one.
  15. And one moreover who tends to focus not on Canada, but on racial politics in the States. I'm not sure how the existence and relative success of a right wing Canadian musician proves that Canada is becoming a "liberal autocracy"?
  16. Apparently not! Well, sort of . . . This is a story my English grandmother used to tell me, but I subsequently discovered that "crap" actually derives from two Middle English loan words. OED says: "late Middle English: related to Dutch krappe, from krappen ‘pluck or cut off’, and perhaps also to Old French crappe ‘siftings’, Anglo-Latin crappa ‘chaff’. The original sense was ‘chaff’, later ‘residue from rendering fat’, also ‘dregs of beer’. Current senses date from the late 19th century." So the word crap itself long predates dear Thomas, whose last name just coincidentally proved to be very appropriate for his chosen profession. That said, I have the sense that "crapper" itself, as a word for toilet bowl or commode, does derive from the English plumber. What a way to be immortalized!
  17. It was also "not his intention" to seem to be supporting Trump with his "Make Second Life Great Again" banners. Methinks he's either being disingenuous, or is kinda dumb.
  18. You realize, of course, that that is what they want! It's a kind of camouflage, often employed by extreme right wing groups, to infiltrate targets unseen! See also bison hides and horns, and nearly everything worn by the January 6 mob. How do you suppose they got into the Capitol so easily? Security got caught averting their eyes in horror. Fiends!
  19. Speaking purely for myself, I'm not advocating banning anything. But I'm pretty much done supporting any merchant who is selling "cool" gun and paramilitary stuff. And I don't care if it has "Antifa Rocks!" written all over it. Enough with the weapons and the violence already. I'm done with it. Period.
