  1. I think any disagreement that Solar and I are having is about the degree of blame to be leveled at posters, rather than whether there is any or not. And -- Solar can correct me -- I think he too regrets that this came to pass. We disagree about whether it was justified, but I think he too wishes it hadn't happened. There are others here, not Solar, who are trading in a sanctimonious smugness that I do disagree with more vehemently however.
  2. Are there are opposing "teams" here? Serious question. I guess there are a few people who think the new changes are "good." But what mostly seems to be under discussion is the reason for them, I think?
  3. That depends I suppose on how one defines death. There is evidence now that engagement is much down here. So is, I would argue, the sense of community. Will the GD literally be removed? Probably not, because it serves a "useful" function as a place for people to ask questions or discuss more technical issues (for which, see the ALM and LOD threads). And there are many subforums with very poor engagement that remain in place. But it is fast becoming unrecognizable. It is not "the same" place in all sorts of ways, and not merely because certain kinds of posts aren't permitted. There was a while there after the changes when there were some really interesting and engaging threads. I thought we might be OK after all. I'm no longer so sure.
  4. I wasn't using it to "justify" anything, Sam. In fact, in a part you didn't quote, I noted that there was some truth to the suggestion that we brought this upon ourselves. What I said was that it was "ironic." And it is. That said, I still think the response was an overreaction, and may well lead to the demise of the GD. And a "cure" that kills the patient . . . isn't really a very effective cure.
  5. Well, it's a pretty seriously funny idea, and god knows I've seen some memes and tweets that I could use for it . . . But, yeah, there's no reason to pointlessly annoy the mods. We know what would happen, and they know we know. Instead, I'm going to form my own picket line outside of the Governor Linden's mansion, with a big placard that reads "I'm Really ****** Off about All This!" https://secondlife.com/destination/governor-linden-s-mansion
  6. There is of course a great deal of truth to this. At the same time, the irony is that I've never seen the GD as generally "well behaved" as it was in the last year or so before the change came into effect. Yes, there were combative threads and some bickering -- but it certainly wasn't as bad as two or three years ago, and nothing like as awful as a decade ago. On top of which, we had pretty good moderation which was, I think, generally working well. I think the main difference is that LL started caring. I'm not sure why.
  7. I can't be any help at all with regard to clothing, but I'm sure there are some who do furries who will be along to assist. There are lots of makers of hair, however, who produce unrigged styles with resizers. Usually, although not always, these are for shorter styles. DP Yumyum and Tram are two that you might try.
  8. Alternately (as you didn't specify which King Charles) I could create one for the Charles I. It would at least save me the cost of buying a new mesh head.
  9. You're trying to have me permanently banned from the forum?? Now . . . if I created a new KingCharlesIII.resident account, and then asked . . . Hmmmmmm
  10. Right! I knew they were working on something like this. I'd imagine this is going to involve some heavy lifting for computers, though? That scene is not SL, btw, is it?
  11. /me raises her hand Excuse me, Miss? What's a "reflection probe"? And why does it sound painful?
  12. This would be a fun game! The problem is that, since they decided (probably wisely) to stop sending boilerplate notifications when they remove a post, it's harder to keep track of which ones have been removed! What do you think of a new thread: "Nuke This!" We'd all post things that were edge-casing the new rules, and essentially dare the mods to remove them. It would be fun, a little dangerous, and easy to keep track of! (I jest of course: I wouldn't wish that upon Dyna and Quartz. But if we didn't have such nice mods, I'd consider it . . .)
  13. I don't disagree with you at all. I don't think there's any question that "engagement" (as social media types say) is down drastically here. And that will likely cascade. There's the real danger of this place becoming a graveyard. But we have had a few interesting threads. Not the ones currently on the front page so much, although Seicher's has some potential. But the LOD and ALM threads have (rather ironically, in my view) become overwhelmed with technical stuff that is, for most of us, both incomprehensible and dull as dishwater. Others get closed, or just peter out. I am sure there will be other interesting and engaging threads. The problem is maintaining a sufficient critical mass of "interesting" to ensure people keep coming back here. And I don't think that's likely: it would require conscious work on our part to keep coming up with, and engaging with, "interesting" threads that are also allowable. As Maddy says, the forums are fading . . . Or GD is, anyway. I'm not sure how it is yet in some of the other subforums, like Relationships, because I don't tend to go there often.
  14. This is true in another way as well. Projectors don't function as projectors unless you have ALM on. And that can sometimes make a big difference. One of the things I'd like to see if this happens is more use of projectors in builds. God knows they ain't perfect, but they look better and perform more realistically than a standard point light.
  15. I've used autorespond, but for some reason I'll still get a pop-up (a "toast"? whatever it's called) when I get an IM and it's on. And it will include both the sender's IM and my response, which generally made me feel so guilty that I'd respond anyway. So now I don't bother. PS. Hiding my online status also leads to feelings of guilt. And sometimes I'll forget to unhide, get a message, and have to convince the person that I am not ghosting them. Ugh.
  16. OMG. That's kind of brilliant. You're the person with the fake chainsaw who comes at me in the "haunted house," and makes me scream even though I know it's fake! I.e., you're the reason I don't do haunted houses anymore!
  17. Here's a related question. Does anyone do Guy Fawkes Day on SL? That could be a hoot! I'd be right into trying to blow up Parlia . . . I mean, sitting around a bonfire!
  18. I was thinking about this earlier. There must actually be family-oriented RP communities that do trick or treat, surely?
  19. When I was a child, I of course loved Hallowe'en (as I'll spell it just because it bugs some people). I loved the candy, and the costumes -- maybe especially the costumes -- and the sense of it being a special occasion. It was a great time to really exercise one's imagination, and it was also a social occasion with friends and neighbours. I have now grown pretty much to loathe it, to be honest, for a variety of reasons, but mostly maybe because the focus of the day has shifted pretty dramatically away from the kids, and towards adults. When I walk past a display for Hallowe'en costumes, I'll see the usual range of cheap superhero costumes for kids . . . and a whole lot of "sexy nurse" and "sexy pilot" ones. Ick. Adults don't have enough fun (and sexy) things to do without appropriating children's holidays? I suppose in part it's about money: young adults have more money to spend than 10 year olds. I also really dislike the degree to which gore and violence have taken a front seat in costumes and decorations. Some of that has always been there, of course, but I think it used to be much more cartoonish and fun. Now it's often really explicitly violent and bloody. And also, the less explicit and more suggestive "horror" -- bloody bandages rather than oozing open wounds -- required so much more active imagination, and was in that sense far scarier. I'm far better at creeping myself out with my imagination than any cheap plastic costume or decoration could ever be. In SL, it sort of takes over everything for about a month and a half. The positive side, I guess, is that there's usually less on sale that I'd want to own, so I save money. So, really, just not my thing. Have fun with it -- I don't begrudge you it if it's your thing. I'll just wait it out, focusing on more positive and beautiful aspects of autumn.
  20. Cinn, have you tried ALM turned on, but shadows (and Ambient Occlusion) turned off? I think shadows are the real laptop killer?
  21. Oh, agreed. I didn't intend to be mean to Paul. I save that for special occasions.
