  1. You've got problems? I have fielded three four phone calls in the last 20 minutes from a niece who is confused about the difference between "strong" and "weak" nominal forms in Old English.
  2. And unfortunately this is the insidious way this sometimes works. It's an old tactic: change something enough that it breaks, note that it is now "broken," and so use that as a justification for just dumping or completely replacing it with something you'd prefer. Change forum rules --> Gosh! People aren't using the GD as much --> The GD is hardly used. Is it necessary, really? --> Kill the GD forum
  3. Or, alternately, an even more old fashioned concern that someone is breaking rules in ways that are designed to hurt someone else? In fairness, I'm not sure that I'd do anything if I came across a profile such as that described above. At most, I might consider contacting those affected, and suggest that they do something about it. But the "mind your own business if it doesn't affect you" school of thought is what tends to lead to people pretending not to notice the bruises that might signal that someone else is being beaten up or abused, walking by the person in obvious distress on the street corner, or conveniently "not hearing" the cries for help echoing across the street at night. "It's not my concern" is perhaps a brute truism, but it's also a pretty inhumane way to conduct oneself in society. But there's another point here: the SL ToS and Community Guidelines are built upon the premise that, if people see violations, they will report it. LL doesn't have a "police force" that watches for violations: these can only be rectified, and the ToS enforced, if we take action to report them. Without our engagement, literally almost no violations of the ToS would ever be addressed by the governance team in-world. And that would pretty quickly reduce SL to a dystopian hell, I suspect. So, if being a good person isn't incentive enough to not "mind your own business," maybe ensuring the continued well-being of the platform is?
  4. Well, it also always seems to necessitate remembering passwords that I haven't had to use for, in some cases, a year or more. Yes yes, I know that there are apps for remembering all of one's passwords. But that would require organization. Organization. Is there an app for that?
  5. Despite the back and forth, and some probable dissent, I'm sensing something of a consensus here. I think that the differences in views here are mostly less dramatic than the agreements. We agree that there was a real problem here, and I think we mostly agree that at least some of the posters were generally responsible. (I am also acutely aware that there are a few people who would number me in that group.) And I think mostly we regret the changes that were made, in the sense that we think that they went too far. There are some differences within this consensus, but they are mostly ones of degree rather than fundamental. For those who come here mostly for discussion that is purely and narrowly about SL -- threads on tech, for instance, or on events, or places in-world -- this all likely seems, for obvious reasons, fine. Those who were here for broader reasons that probably encompassed those things but also included more general "free play" and banter are inevitably less happy. /me shrugs I don't think I've a lot more to say about this; it's all been said more eloquently than I could probably manage. So PET PEEVE: My computer updated last night and it took about a half an hour this morning to go through all of the nonsense that was necessary to get it running normally again. Grrr.
  6. So, the one that is new here is Emissive? Is there any change to the effect, or ways in which one can tweak, Normal and Specular (i.e., Metallic-Rougness)? Or is it that this separates the last two, which are together now?
  7. So here's my peeve, and it's a very real one: There's been a kind of "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" thing here. We didn't just lose the permission to talk about politics: we can't talk about anything, outside of this and a few other threads, that isn't pretty obviously SL related. Even things that likely wouldn't result in firefights. The result is that people like @LittleMe Jewell, who typically does not get into political arguments, and in most cases actively avoids them, is finding this place pretty dull right now. And I think to a great degree the problem is what you identify as a kind of compulsion, not so much to be nice, as to be . . . anodyne and a bit drab. Any kind of compulsion is going to lead inevitably to some stifling of creativity and interest.
  8. Sure, of course. We've had some awful threads here, and they were often, but not always, centred on politics. But it's important to recognize, at least based on what we were told here and at the SUG meeting, that it wasn't the "politics" as such that were the issue. It was that the politics tended to feed into nasty and toxic fights. The real issue wasn't that we were talking about things that weren't SL related, but rather that, when we did, the situation often got out of hand, and the mods were hard-pressed to control it.
  9. I think any disagreement that Solar and I are having is about the degree of blame to be leveled at posters, rather than whether there is any or not. And -- Solar can correct me -- I think he too regrets that this came to pass. We disagree about whether it was justified, but I think he too wishes it hadn't happened. There are others here, not Solar, who are trading in a sanctimonious smugness that I do disagree with more vehemently however.
  10. Are there are opposing "teams" here? Serious question. I guess there are a few people who think the new changes are "good." But what mostly seems to be under discussion is the reason for them, I think?
  11. That depends I suppose on how one defines death. There is evidence now that engagement is much down here. So is, I would argue, the sense of community. Will the GD literally be removed? Probably not, because it serves a "useful" function as a place for people to ask questions or discuss more technical issues (for which, see the ALM and LOD threads). And there are many subforums with very poor engagement that remain in place. But it is fast becoming unrecognizable. It is not "the same" place in all sorts of ways, and not merely because certain kinds of posts aren't permitted. There was a while there after the changes when there were some really interesting and engaging threads. I thought we might be OK after all. I'm no longer so sure.
  12. I wasn't using it to "justify" anything, Sam. In fact, in a part you didn't quote, I noted that there was some truth to the suggestion that we brought this upon ourselves. What I said was that it was "ironic." And it is. That said, I still think the response was an overreaction, and may well lead to the demise of the GD. And a "cure" that kills the patient . . . isn't really a very effective cure.
  13. Well, it's a pretty seriously funny idea, and god knows I've seen some memes and tweets that I could use for it . . . But, yeah, there's no reason to pointlessly annoy the mods. We know what would happen, and they know we know. Instead, I'm going to form my own picket line outside of the Governor Linden's mansion, with a big placard that reads "I'm Really ****** Off about All This!" https://secondlife.com/destination/governor-linden-s-mansion
  14. There is of course a great deal of truth to this. At the same time, the irony is that I've never seen the GD as generally "well behaved" as it was in the last year or so before the change came into effect. Yes, there were combative threads and some bickering -- but it certainly wasn't as bad as two or three years ago, and nothing like as awful as a decade ago. On top of which, we had pretty good moderation which was, I think, generally working well. I think the main difference is that LL started caring. I'm not sure why.
  15. I can't be any help at all with regard to clothing, but I'm sure there are some who do furries who will be along to assist. There are lots of makers of hair, however, who produce unrigged styles with resizers. Usually, although not always, these are for shorter styles. DP Yumyum and Tram are two that you might try.
  16. Alternately (as you didn't specify which King Charles) I could create one for the Charles I. It would at least save me the cost of buying a new mesh head.
  17. You're trying to have me permanently banned from the forum?? Now . . . if I created a new KingCharlesIII.resident account, and then asked . . . Hmmmmmm
  18. Right! I knew they were working on something like this. I'd imagine this is going to involve some heavy lifting for computers, though? That scene is not SL, btw, is it?
  19. /me raises her hand Excuse me, Miss? What's a "reflection probe"? And why does it sound painful?
  20. This would be a fun game! The problem is that, since they decided (probably wisely) to stop sending boilerplate notifications when they remove a post, it's harder to keep track of which ones have been removed! What do you think of a new thread: "Nuke This!" We'd all post things that were edge-casing the new rules, and essentially dare the mods to remove them. It would be fun, a little dangerous, and easy to keep track of! (I jest of course: I wouldn't wish that upon Dyna and Quartz. But if we didn't have such nice mods, I'd consider it . . .)
