  1. When I first started Second Life I wanted my own parcel where I paid Linden Labs directly. I would still really like to do it but the costs of having to maintain a full region plus the costs related to a homestead is too much. Considering that gives me two full regions that is also way too much land for what I want or could possibly even use. I could find renters but that is a hassle. Which leaves renting from someone else. After nine years here, I have found good rental companies (such as the one I am renting from now) but the bad ones are what make me want to get land directly from Linden Labs. It's too bad one can't do that through a direct purchase of a homestead which could come directly off a payment plan like the subscription fees. A homestead was perfect. A homestead PLUS one full region was too much.
  2. That's a good question. People ARE using Flickr, Facebook, and blogs just as you said. But there should be a way to advertise IN Second Life as well. For as many blogs as there are out there I have to admit to following or reading very few of them. And while Flickr and Facebook are nice to provide visuals of new products for my favourite SL brands, I can't actually buy or interact with the items by visiting those sites. I shop and spend Lindens in SL therefore it is in SL where the advertising should be done. I don't think that this is something Linden Labs can change. It has to be something community driven but not just tacking up a billboard and calling it a day. Billboards are eyesores because they are (many times) out of place with the environment they are in. The other drawback as you said is that they are fixed in one location where people may or may not see them. People can't buy things they don't know about. If Linden Labs can't, won't or are unable to do this for us, then people need to work together on advertising. This can be as simple as Stores A and B that sell related products or services to agree to mutual promotion in each others stores (like a small sign with their logo and a landmark giver). Sort of quid-pro-quo situation where people work together to increase the business of any parties involved. For example: a skin store could advertise in a shape store and vice versa or an accessory store advertising in a shop that exclusively sells clothes. The items are related and would not be the least bit out of place. Advertising then becomes a social project that still involves networking but in a more impactful way than just putting up a billboard in a random location. I shop a lot and I don't see enough of this kind of thing. People could also combine sales events. Let's say store A is having a sale but they often use items from Store B in their ads. What is to stop those store owners from telling their respective groups that they are having are all having a sale and provide links in a group notice so they all could find those shops easier? It doesn't have to be a big event - even 3 stores working together could find success. I have seen those done in the past and thought they were a neat way to do promoting.
  3. I think if you want to make money in Second Life you have to examine what real life talent can be turned into a marketable skill in world. If you have any sort of artistic or technical ability then you should just look for a niche you can fill for the residents of Second Life. You really can do almost anything and make Lindens here if you have any sort of talent or ability even if it is just being a CSR for a group you are active in. Then develop mutually beneficial relationships with people that can support and promote you at the same time you help and support them. I have made Lindens being a live model for events and stores and then was asked to be marketing manager for Ghee. When my real life job became too stressful I took a step back from that and looked for something else that I could do to fill my time in Second Life that suited my new real life schedule. I think that is important to consider - what is your real life schedule like? The last thing you want is to start a venture here in SL, have it take off and then have no time to really work at it because of real life commitments. That would just cause stress - and not the good kind. If you have a busy schedule or one that is sporatic like I do, then I would also recommend working out a schedule where you fit everything you want or need to do in both real and Second Life into it. It really helped me a lot to do that. Everything got attention then and nothing felt overwhelming time wise. For example you may spend an hour doing promotions for your abilities every day, you could put in an hour on creating or updating your social media. Since you said you are an artist you could spend a few hours creating new art pieces daily, or watching YouTube tutorials on how to develop skills in Photoshop or mesh creation. You can really tailor it to you and what you want to do and what will help to achieve your Second Life goals and still have time for what is really important in anything we do in Second Life: F U N.
  4. The question is in the title. Looking to see how much other people paid to have Linden Labs set that up for them.
  5. To keep things manageable in between sorting sessions, I have about 15 folders for different categories of things. They include: - body parts (mesh heads, bodies, ears, hands etc) - clothing (put into alphabetized folders based on store name) - make up and accessories (jewelry, tatoos, gloves, hats, hair... all that kind of stuff goes here into separate folders for category) - demos (as I try them on I put them into folders based on whether I want to give it further thought after trying it on or if I definitely want to purchase it later.) - hunt / gacha packages - need to open (for things I cant classify right off by title) - projects I am working on - house and garden items I find it gets rid of the clutter and I can still find things even if I don't get as much time to sort out my inventory as Id like.
  6. I am wondering how many people in SL use these on a regular basis. I seen the list on the SL Wiki and there seems to be quite a lot.
  7. There isn't really a chance in gacha - you purchase each item with a set amount of lindens. Whether its the item you want or not is irrelevant as there is a key you can look at before deciding to put your money in but you will always get an item for paying. With loot boxes (the "pay first, receive later" ones) you always know what kind of items you will be getting ahead of time (house, avatar appearance etc) before paying the amount asked for. You may not always like the items or use them but you are still guaranteed to get an item or group of items for the money paid. For me it is no different than people charging for hunt items: you may get a great item, you may get a lousy item or you may get an item like I usually get that stays boxed up for years after the hunt is over!
  8. I suppose that people on the opposite end of the spectrum - those extremely obese - can relate to your feelings. Especially your third paragraph where you start by saying "I never wanted to be anorexic" it can be changed so easily to "I never wanted to be obese". I think it is a natural human desire to want to be around people that we can share our innermost thoughts and feelings with without fear of recrimination and guilt trips. I think everyone wants people to accept them for who and what they are. I truly think not having that need met can drive us insane. I do wonder though - if it was an obese person going to the lengths that an anorexic goes to to lose weight - would there still be such a concern over the methods used? Or would they be applauded for their efforts and determination? Or perhaps it wouldn't matter as they are both issues that represent a problem with food consumption. My biggest issue (and the only correction I would make to your otherwise good post) is where you say certain things like depression and anorexia are not learned. I think we learn from the experiences we have had through out life. If we have had a lot of very negative things happen in a relatively short amount of time or even across the years of our lives we WILL become depressed. Simply because we will have learned through experience that there is a bad side as well as a good. We know that things will not always work out and that makes it very difficult to be 100% positive and happy. These things condition us to think certain ways and since we can't go back and change them to be happier memories we just have to go on living as best we can. I think it is difficult for people to relate to problems as people don't want to hear about them and / or they simply have not experienced that many problems and losses as the depressed person. So the people that are experiencing difficulties don't feel that they can share things with others and so they suffer in silence. Sometimes to the point of wanting to kill themselves either slowly (like through an eating disorder) or quickly (such as pills or some other means). Best thing I found is just to listen even if you don't agree or want to hear about it. Save the judgement about the person and the issues in their life. Just be there for them. For the person that is sharing - try to find things that make you happy that do not contribute to the medical condition you find yourself facing. Also try to find out what is making you feel the way you do. There is an underlying reason and once you deal with that you will know exactly what to do to fix it. It's like anger - anger usually covers up something else like fear. If you deal with the fear, you also deal with the anger because the anger is just a symptom. The best way I can say it I guess is that things like anorexia and depression are an outward sign to an inner problem. So what do you think is the underlying cause for your anorexia? Since this thread is about what we will accept or won't accept. I can accept you for being anorexic. You are simply one more person struggling - and I think anyone that has ever experienced a bad time in life should be able to relate to that. I am glad you reached out to people. Especially if you are lonely. Takes a brave person to do that especially with an issue that will draw judgement.
  9. Wow. That's just creepy. But putting aside the "Ick" factor, I suppose it makes sense that there would be people out there that would want to be a victim just as there are people that want to be the criminal. Hard to know what to say really to that particular case. Would the person really be guilty of murder if the person wanted to die? Would it be a mercy killing? Maybe the guy had a horrible life. I read about that case after reading your post and the guy was drugged heavily - so could he really have formed a coherent statement to say no once it started? If not, then the guy should have been found guilty of murder. The thought occurs to me now that this case has been mentioned here that if anyone wants to and has the talent they can create something like this on the marketplace for those that want to roleplay serial killer cannibals.. I can just see it now on the marketplace.... Probably with the silly name of "Johnny! He's What's For Dinner!" Ewwwwwww.....
  10. I think that the biggest determining factor in what we accept or won't accept is the fact that there are tools at our disposal in SL that we do not have access to in real life. If things get too bad we can put the person on our block list, teleport away, choose not to respond to them, log out, go afk or just log in with an alt if we have them. We can't do that in reality - so in the case of someone tormenting us in the name of role-play we can escape. We are safe at home and not actually in the situation. We are basically observers of our Second Life - no different than watching a violent scene in a movie or tv show. When in that particular position we can view things with a certain level of detachment even if we are interacting with someone else and that detachment allows us to look past some of our own morality code. However. There are certain areas of SL roleplay that I do not want to be a part of. I can respect peoples choices if they are okay with it for themselves but my limit is when they try to get me to take part in it. I usually try to steer the conversation in a different direction or find a reason to leave or log out if people do. Occasionally though it is important to just be blunt and say "I am not into this so lets just change the subject". I remember dancing with someone at a club and having them continuously hit on me when I made it clear I just wanted conversation. Finally I just said something along the lines of "Look, you want something I don't want so why don't we just go our separate ways now?" He agreed and we both went to do our own thing. I suppose that's another way of keeping our limits intact - just avoiding places and people we know are going to put us in situations that make us uncomfortable or continuously push our limits. (For me that means no more dance clubs). SL is a big place - whatever you are into or want you will find, if you search hard enough, so you definitely don't need to spend time with the people that make you uncomfortable or don't share the same interests you do. And that means your SL experience will be a much more relaxed and happy one.
  11. Things like an avatars race and gender don’t matter too much to me. I think if you are in Second Life (or any other online world) then you can be who you want to be. The only proviso I would offer is don’t lie about it if asked point blank about your real life self. You don’t have to answer their question and you can say “I’m sorry but I don’t discuss my personal life with people I don’t know” but once you lie about who you are then you run the risk of creating problems for yourself. As someone said – we are not required to be who we are in reality in a virtual world. Another person asked though why would anyone care? Why indeed is what I say, but some people do. And even though there are thousands of people involved in SL and those other online worlds who would share that attitude sometimes it just takes one negative experience to set a series of events in motion that can have very real and far reaching consequences in real life. Let me tell you a story. There was this guy that began playing an online roleplaying game. It was his very first mmo and he created a very cool female avatar with a great backstory. He was fun to be around and a great role-player. He was doing missions with someone one day and they were having a great time until the inevitable question came up of “Are you a girl in real life?”. The guy answered honestly that no, he was a guy in real life. That changed things and the other person got very nasty. Instead of just passing it off the guy simply began lying about who he was to everyone he met online. He played this game with his real life wife who, after seeing the situation getting out of control, could not handle the lies he was telling to the people that they both had become friends with. This created a rift between them and, ultimately, they wound up separating and are now divorced. An extreme situation perhaps but it wouldn’t be the first time a virtual world has affected reality. If the person that was nasty had just been a little bit open minded – who knows what might have happened? That couple may still be together. But we live in reality, and sometimes Second Life mirrors that reality a bit too well because we are dealing with the real life people behind the avatars and any negative attitudes they bring into the virtual world we share.
  12. What a fantastic house! To add to the original post - You know you play too much Second Life when a person in real life tells you that they are going to bed and you tell them "Okay - enjoy your RESET"
  13. I am thrilled and honored to be a finalist for this event. I wish good luck to the other finalists as well.
  14. YAY!!!! YOU are now my hero!!!! Thank you!!! Those are the ones I was looking for!
  15. I seen these tatoos recently that look like long wounds but they have white flowers growing in them. Ive checked group notices, went to most of the events that are open now, browsed through the Seraphim website catalogs and the Second Life marketplace, checked out stores, past Flickr images from people I follow and asked people if they knew where to find those particular tatoos. I have seen them only in the past couple of months so I think they are new releases. Any help on finding these elusive tatoos would be so appreciated and welcome.
  16. I have also been having log in problems for the past hour or so.
  17. I am not a model in Second Life but I have done some training through the Miss Virtual World Modelling Academy. I have the most experience with them but there are other reputable schools out there as well. What I can tell you is that the training I received was extremely useful for anyone in Second Life not just those aspiring to be models. They will teach you about shapes, animations, posing, skins, adjusting your appearance, sizing your avatar, editing clothing, putting an animation overrider together with walks and poses, and are a constant resource for how to do things or where to find things (just to name a few things). They will also teach you about the backstage production of a fashion show (or really any show because it can be applied to any live event in Second Life). But be forewarned - this knowledge will NOT come cheap. I know most people think that the costs of taking a comprehensive modelling course is expensive but I wish that I had done it long ago. What I learned there would have saved me a ton of Lindens by saving me from buying things that just dont work when it comes to basic avatar necessities (skins, shape, animation, hair, etc). So in the end - you pay alot at the start but you will learn so much that its worth it. But Lindens aren't the only thing I'm talking about. Im talking about TIME investments. Prepare to spend hours searching for just the right poses to go with that formal gown that has a huge adornment at the back that gets in the way, or making sure that no strands of hair are cutting into your clothing or avatar. Be prepared to relearn how to walk in Second Life and do stops, stands, movements that create a seamless performance. Also be prepared to do alot of real life research for what look designers are after when it comes to styling. Some of the ones I had to research was Harajuko (which as about 5 different subcategories that have not much to do with the outfits that Gwen Stefani's entourage wore) and avante garde. But that was also fun in that I seen firsthand just how amazing and unique some of the designers are here in Second Life. We also styled from real life runway looks - I watched several Chanel shows to get a feel for the overall look Lagerfeld created for that fashion house). The best of the best in the modelling world spent a huge amount of time working on those kinds of things long before they were asked to do the fashion shows or print ads for the biggest names in SL fashion. The attention they showed to detail and their willingness to pursue the absolute best looking, well put together avatar possible is visible just by looking at them. But not all the people that are well known in the fashion world in Second Life are models. Some have branched out and started stores selling various things (clothing, poses, etc), do blogging,or created regular shopping events. I would also think of that kind of thing - what do you want to accomplish by modelling? Just a small note here too - please do not think that models make alot of money - because they don't! Even if they get a sweet deal with a designer there are always going to be new poses, new hair, new skins, eyes, animations, etc to buy to stay current that will NOT come for free. The other thing is attitude. Just like in real life - Second Life modelling can be a cutthroat industry to be in. I have met some really awesome people though that are willing to give of their time and talents - just to help people in need. Those are the best models - those are the "Audrey Hepburn" models. And I say that name because she was a fashion icon but also a humanitarian one. There are a huge amount of models in Second Life whose "physical" beauty is replaceable by another pretty set of pixels but the heart that those models have shown towards others can't be. I consider it an honor to call some of those kinds of models friends. So I guess thats what I will sign off with - really think about what you can bring to the modelling world, what you want to accomplish with it in Second Life, what kinds of things you would like to do that might not be modelling. And then if you still want to go for it - let me know - and I will recommend some people to you. In game name is Yhishara Cerise. I have messages set to go to my email if Im not online. Good luck!!
  18. Thank you for your respones. It is all fixed now
  19. Hi. I am taking part in an event and I need to price some objects for sale. I did one and its done correctly. The next one I did though is a problem. If I click on it I can buy it for the right price of 250L but if I select pay then it reads as only 10L. The item is two linked prims. Ive repriced them both to read 250L but when I link them I still get the price of 10L. The object is for an upcoming charity fundraiser so its really important to have that 250L price as the only one showing up. Any idea how to fix this?
  20. Since you asked and the thread has already been resurrected.... There are several stores I can think of that put very beautiful items on their gacha machines. What makes them rare is that the most elaborate peices in those machines are hard to get with only one or two pulls (though sometimes you get lucky). Rare and desireable though is really in the eye of the beholder but if you played a machine and one or two peices eluded you then it becomes a case of supply and demand. Lets take for example DRD"s Mystery Mansion set. Right now the complete set is on the SL Marketplace for $5000 to $7500 Lindens for the complete set. If you seen a peice you wanted but missed the event you are out of luck as the set is now retired (while I write this I am at the DRD main store looking at their Gacha section and the Mystery Mansion set from the Arcade event a few months ago is not here). This may seem like a huge amount but keep in mind that there are 32 items in this set. However, thanks to people reselling their copies you may be able to buy the peice you want. For a really sought after peice (like most of the structures in a gacha machine are) you are going to be paying whatever the going rate is for them. I sometimes do wish that people that created items for gacha machines WOULD just sell them outright but think about it - if you play a machine and you dont get what you want you will keep playing in hopes that you will get that item on the next pull. The creator makes alot of money that way. The best creators have a balance between gacha items and for sale items. There are some stores where I rarely play the machines because everything they release seems to go on gacha machines - so I opt to just buy the items I want on the marketplace. To me I just think thats a money grab and a sign of greed on the part of the creators regardless of how beautiful the item is. Some are becoming better though - like the Epiphany event (you can exhange extras for rare items) or the Gacha Garden event (you can earn a special prize for playing the game so many times). Ideally the creator would accept a trade in for the items you are missing and want (X amount of commons for the rares, 1 rare for 5 commons or something like that). The items (no matter how beautiful) are sometimes just not worth the price paid.
  21. I am looking to purchase the full perm template for a dress I have seen in a few stores now - the most recent being from Prism for the Peace on Earth 7 hunt. I have been looking on the marketplace but having no luck. The Prism version can be seen here http://peaceonearthsl.com/category/prism/ . I know that it isn't an original design by the stores selling it but I would like to know who the original designer of the template for this dress was so I can find out if it is still available. Any help will be appreciated.
