  1. only the designers of v2, under the direction to make the viewer "more browser-like" would think it's a brilliant idea to rely on one of the most reviled browser plagues.... the pop-up
  2. Humor.... once upon a time LL created a word filter that caused anyone using my name in a post (even a quote) to be automatically moderated and hidden.... giving me special uber powers to terrify the uninformed =)
  3. I think sub-ranks are mostly designed with people who have a drive to ladder climb in mind, as confirmation of progression... I don't see much point in it personally, or much use to the community at large. I think the article writer was a bit too narrowly focused though.... there plenty of talk about the psychology of the people who like to do that sort of thing just because they can, and not enough of focusing on things that might compell more casual users to take a more active part in the community..... the solutions presented seemed directed more at maintaining the projected percentage by catering towards one specific type of user, rather than engaging a larger number of community. as such it seems like it was a bit overplanned.

"ranks" as it were allow board managers to keep often abused tools like image posting, videos, etc out of the hands of accounts that just signed up, which makes it harder for the spammers to do their thing... Only that everyone can post images and videos. Besides, spammers rarely use anything other than text. the statement was generalized, for all ranking structures... many forums do something similar in that they don't let newbie post live links (something spammers and exploiters rely on) Ishtara Rothschild wrote: So if someone with a Helper badge posts an answer, and I answer the same question with my orange Ms Nobody badge, I can be sure that my answer will be ignored. Why would I even bother posting? well, for starters, because those people started out the same way, and if you are getting to the answer before the person with the helper badge, why whould THEY bother?.... more likely with the amount of assitance they provide, they'd merely confirm that your answer is the right one.... one would hope you would post because you felt like being helpful, and screw em if they can't realize you got it right and first (heavens knows you see it often enough) Ishtara Rothschild wrote: Void Singer wrote: ...as well as letting the board operators know that those are people whose suggestions for improvements are likely to be well thought out and not spurious thanks to experience with the available tools. No. Nothing against you, but just look at the higher ranked folks here. The prokodile and MP, just to name two of them. I for one am glad that the Lindens were listening to us orange nobodies, instead of those who were already a little more equal than us, when they decided to add this Off Topic forum and allow all of us to post youTube videos. I hope it stays this way. actually I'm looking at this thread and seeing the two highest ranked people here (Irene, who is also the higest ranked resident I've seen, and Suella) also happen to recognized by pretty much every regular as being some of the most helpful people ever...... Prok rates a mere member (and is sometimes quite helpful despite the crazy conspiracy theories), and I'm not sure who MP is, but I also note that Cerise Sorbet, another well known and highly active person helping others has risen quickly too. me I've been backing off the forums recently, and only barely made "member".... not that I care, but it does identify me as someone that helps quite a bit in the content creation forums... mostly scripting, so that newbies have someone to look for..... but it would be nice if those top people in certain areas had the ability to do things like sticky important threads, or suggest changes to the official references when they notice they're incomplete or out of date (and they're the people that usually know first) will some people get caught up in a game of one-upmanship? it's inevitable.... but at least their energies will be directed towards helping, which IMO isn't all that bad of a social hack.... will some people try to game the system? oh you betcha! but they'll also be easy to spot and easy to ignore or smack down by LL, so I doubt that'd be an issue
  5. in the very unlikely event that you mean system hair instead of prim hair, right click on your avatar, or go to the "me" menu and choose "appearance" then click on the tab for hair.
  6. the best free way is obviously to lower your settings.... even if on a custom babsis... water and sky elements tend to have the higest impact. particles along with draw distance, and moving around a lot to new areas will also negatively impact FPS, and so will other programs running in the background while SL is running (although this is usually minimal) some older cards will perform better with the legacy render engine, used by snowglobe based TPV's, some will not. otherwise as the first person said, it's probably time to upgrade, if you are able
  7. if your setup hasn't changed, then you should still be able to run one of the many 3rd Party Viewers even if changes to the official viewer have made it unusable for you. if you have not updated and are receiving this message it means that something has changed on your system... this could be file corruption of video card drivers, the side effect of a virus, or even a partial hardware failure.... make sure to scan you system thoroughly, and/or reinstall your video drivers if that's the case
  8. this is a matter of object updates.... you aren't getting a full update when you return to your region... why, I don't know, as I've not seen this happen before myself.... perhaps it's specific to the viewer being used or some setting... such as ping or velocity interpolate objects.... check on those first (there were also some similar problems that were unique to linux multiple desktops) the popular methods for forcing a full object update should work, if you can't find a solution in the above, although they are going to make more work for the region since you'll need them to be called on a regular basis.... the most popular are a move or rotation of more than 6degees or 0.1m, or a change to hover text (which can be set full alpha) as to how spinning is different than rotating... the first in video and texture context implies a constant motion, which is what target omega gives, while the later implies a singular motion, which is what set local rotation does
  9. I think people are focusing too much on the name, and not enough on the effect..... "ranks" as it were allow board managers to keep often abused tools like image posting, videos, etc out of the hands of accounts that just signed up, which makes it harder for the spammers to do their thing... ... it also serves to point out the people that are well known for being helpful (and have probably been around the longest and are the most well versed at what they do) to all those newbs that pop up, as well as letting the board operators know that those are people whose suggestions for improvements are likely to be well thought out and not spurious thanks to experience with the available tools. the icons are stupid, the naming scheme is inane, but the usefulness to the community is almost as good as this

Not that I would ever stoop to such a thing, naturally. ^exactly why serious sculpt makers have to waste space and add a 25% overhead to their creations to put in an alpha channel to prevent exactly thist type of theft .
  12. Josh Susanto wrote: Files saved at 768x768 actually look clearer than files reduced to 512x512. then you are using the wrong method to reduce them... the default SL method (pixel resize, IIRC) can do ok for some images, but in general a bilinear or bicubic resample (or fractal resample) will do far better for most images Josh Susanto wrote: Also, they load back out at 768 with more of the original data left to manipulate. not only untrue, but not physically possible... they export at 512 (what SL shrunk it to on upload) with the 512^2 pixels worth of data at 24bits of color data, and 8 bits of transparency data (if an alpha channel was included) each
  13. :: would also like to see linkbacks:: and I've noticed another missing thing.... links to specific posts.... oh you can hack around it by bookmarking one then going to your settings and copying the link location, if you're observant enough you can write one from the mouseover information in the reply or options links (or the forum view "recent" link"), but it is a bit of a pain. what I DO like is the "float this XXX to the top".... I have my 4 major forums floated to the top, and I can effectively sticky any thread I feel like in a forum for quick reference (although this does nothing to help newbies, it helps me link to them so I can tell the newbies where to go) [pro-tip: if you don't want the item at the top of all of your floats to be the top float, un-floating and re-floating it moves it one space down the list of floated items, and you don't have to refresh to repeat the actions]
  14. I drew pretty much the same conclusions for SL use... nice for machinima makers but not really worth any more than a decent joystick that costs half as much. for 3 modeling evnironments it might be a little beter, but since it's option under powered at two buttons, for the low end model my overall estimation is "overpriced gadget" rather than "costly but useful tool"
  15. PeterCanessa Oh wrote: Void Singer wrote: prim point light (on the features page) ... can only be set for the whole object That's wrong Void, in fact it can only be set per prim. Editing a build consisting of two or more linked prims, the features page says "select a single prim to set features". Edit-linked allows each prim to have it's own, different, point-light setting. To test link two cubes a couple of metres apart. Edit the linked object, select features tab, edit linked and select a single prim. Make one cube a green light and the other a red one. Rez a cube between the others and texture it white (for best effect). Face towards red will be lit red, face towards green will be lit greeen. Face lit by both will appear yellow. whoops, I meant to write for the whole prim (as opposed to per face like the other settings), thanks for catching that I'll edit it now
  16. please see my comment to your original question here for part of the explanation (namely about the box around your text)... the rest is, default badge text is black both bayfog and tokyo use white, spat uses black but wikes out most of the bacground, modern uses a combination, but also wipes out most of the background. those are our ONLY choices at this time. you can cheat and use a photo editor to add color behind or around your name text to make it stand out more (or fade in more)
  17. you can't remove it entirely, but you can choose a different badge theme (check the box and clik one) that will either make it semi-transparent with blue bars on the right (bayfog theme) or add semi transparent boxes around all the information (tokyo theme)... youll need to reselect your background image too be careful with these though, because you will have a difficult time going back to the original white box theme if you do... but is is possible if you use firefox and have firebug installed, by right clicking beside the tokyo theme, selecting "inspect element" then opening that element and editing the one below it in the "value =" and setting it to "tb_none"
  18. Ruuh Cassini it would appear that signatures are limited in height, you may want to rethink your image or text there....
  19. changing your group title seems to work to return it all to visible after removing it from the blacklist
  20. no arguments there, it's a bug that it doubles up like that, and should be jira'd... one would expect a fall through filter, or an early return...
  21. ::beats Chosen with a stick until he uses paragraph breaks:: :smileyvery-happy: ETA: wow that was fast!
  22. yes.... round robin style is one way each piece has a single listen, and a single message that it sends when it gets the exact message it is listening for from an object owned by the same person, on a specific channel. the hud can be touched to say the first message, which the first item listens for, and if it receives it sends the message the second is looking for, until the last one which sends a message the hud is listening for to trigger the prize another alternative, was used by excite as part of one of their hunts, each item sends a message when it is touched, and the hud or listening item can either remove that item from the list it's listening for (until it reaches no items, and triggers) or do them in sequence, listening for the first item, then when heard, listen for the second item (if an out of order item comes in, then reset to listening for the first)
