  1. I remember when Tilia was introduced. I think Tilia is spelled with one l. It was said Tilia has some brilliant kind of coding and may be un-hackable. That made Tilia a very valuable asset than I gather from this news. But, otherwise, perhaps Linden Research needed to raise some funding at this time also.
  2. It was an item that was not mapped at all. It was a SL prim part I made into a long stick that held a party favor on it that I stuck the 128 on. But, I may as well just tint it the next time. Those small textures loose so much detail it's not worth an upload and after the party people forget about it anyways. But, I'm glad you mentioned this as I was just yesterday wondering about beads. The beads are all on one map with the other stuff but I reduced the whole map to a 512 and did not make small bits for the beads and thought I was doing it wrong but maybe I did right. But, I am having some loss in detail in certain clothing that I think needs a 1024 one map rather than a 512 one map but the tinies might scoff at it if it's 1024. The 1024's I want to use for the Dinkie clothing are mapped into one map. I have a Dinkie friend builder who told me to make everything 512. Was she right?, wrong?, what?
  3. People wouldn't buy stuff with super low textures though cause it would look like crap. I even used a 128 for a stick and the texturing of it was lost; may as well have colored it a color. First of all, regarding large textures, I think the math might be 100 Dinkies equals 1 Legacy mesh body. So, the Dinkies/tinies could possibly render high pixel textures without a problem. But, the vast majority of SL wants to be a human, so testing it is kind of moot. I am still a bit curious though. Plus, Dinkies and other tiny animal avatars live like humans and buy furniture and houses and buy from many main creators humans do. I was just wondering how many 1024's we could render. But, my concern is, with the new viewer it could make low pixel textures not look very good. But, as Fluffy said, kain't really know because there is no time machine to the future.
  4. I never said that nor thought it. I said for a test and it would be a test of texture size vs poly count because I think it's the high poly count that is the bigger lagger than texture size. But, we wouldn't know exactly unless we tested it.
  5. A bunch of us should get together as tinies wearing 1024's and see how much lag there is then because the tiny avatars are very low poly. A Dinkie is about 17k triangles, I think or somewhere in that ballpark, whilst a very heavy poly body that is very popular and very nice is 1 million triangles though. Also, the tinies don't have much in the way of scripts going whereas a human avatar is scripted from head to toe, even down to the grommets on their shoes. But, again on the 1024's. There are some things for Dinkies I'd like to make in 1024 as it looks better. I'm trying to shrink down some things before I put them on the 512 but that looks more bad than I thought. I dunnoooooo what to do. It's very frustrating. Many of our cards render 1024 so I'm confused, and as I said, very frustrated. And, PBR is commercial grade, so I'd think people would want to create with 1024.
  6. Well, its only obvious that ALM needs more power, and it would to render four textures. I'm not so convinced about this PBR viewer and it seems to me it could interfere with innovation and creativity and is sounds like building a graphics program rather than a viewer. And, then there goes your world, your imagination and welcome to a graphics program? It sounds like a graphics program because it sounds very rigid. And, I don't like this everything is either metal or not metal idea. There aren't that many metal things to begin with. However, this bump and shiny together in this viewer is lousy. And, then there is the economy and costs of items will attempt to go up during this downturn in the economy because of having to download more textures. I think maybe they should at least consider having two viewers. Second Life and Second Life II. The main thing though is texture size. Will this new viewer be able to handle 1024's? Because a lot of 512's don't always look good on the viewer that exists now. I want to have 1024's. So, what does this new viewer mean for texture size? And can all these gaming computers that everyone is raving about render 1024's without the lag happening all over again?
  7. I don't know if improved is the right word but rather it enriched it. It brought to me digital art which I fell in love with in SL and still do to this day. I am a Dinkie and hang out with the tinies of the Shire and they are very much into digital art, the kind that one would hang on a wall in real life. The tinies and Dinkies have art shows and there are galleries the tinies have in many places. The art shows are often poignant and bittersweet and we talk about the art the artist is presenting. Some people think digital art is worthless because it's not tangible but it could be printed and hung in one's real life house as well.
  8. I hadn't even gotten to this part yet. I heard quantum computers could be mainstream five years or less and that was about six months ago. Many large corporations in America, I've heard, already have them. But, back down to reality and what is happening today and what is happening today could be a deep and prolonged period of stagflation. I am leery of LL's timing for a new viewer where you can only see the stuff if you have a powerful computer and have to upload four textures which means raising prices and getting people to buy the new shiny, but that doesn't work well during bad economic times except for more essentials items and for even essentials people find ways to cut costs like making their own clothes or buying in bulk and splitting goods up. The best thing the new LL is doing is making the new mesh avatars which could help newbies save money. The whole world is walking on eggshells economically right now. I just say it's a time to be cautious. Let people migrate to the new viewer when they have the money to buy new hardware and don't force ALM. I preferred the click on windlight system and still miss it - a lot. Sometimes this new EEP and ALM lighting looks a bit "cartoony". It's too bright or something...? I dunno. But, I am not a fan of it. I used windlight and ALM to take photos and I thought it looked terrific, not cartoony.
  9. I'm not engaging in a bit of hyperbole. We *are* in a global energy crisis that could weigh on economies for years to come. That said, updating is fine but I've said I believe LL needs two viewers to see who migrates to the new viewer or not, somewhat approaching it like they did Sansar. Also, I simply think it's bad timing to except people to get a new computer to run ALM at all times. The economy is what it is. When many of us migrated to SL during the banking crisis in the early 2000's, we all did not need to buy a new computer during that terrible economic time of The Great Recession. The economy of today is different plus we are on the cusp of changing to energy efficiency including computing. The new metaverse needs to not only be easy to use, affordable and fun. It needs to be energy efficient too.
  10. I would think ALM is a resource hog period because it requires a bigger power supply. I just don't know what these new energy efficient chips are going to be but they will use up less energy. lol As far as new users, 'what to do' as Sid says is important and looking good is important but there shouldn't be very much lag when one signs on as they don't have that big inventory. I am not looking forward to PBR as it sounds like a resource hog to me if ALM has to be on at all times. Resource hogs are going out of style is what I'm saying.
  11. You started your post about the economy, yep. And this morning I just read we are possibly going into a long period of stagflation which means higher prices, higher unemployment and slow growth. I believe what will take the Western world out of this slow growth is newer energy. The whole world will change, including computers. Chip makers are already now making energy efficient chips; those are in the pipeline being made now. ALM is a resource hog and what happens if Nvidia stops updating those resource hog chips? and full stop In my country where I live our power grid is maxed out now and we get notices to reduce our power useage in emergency messages. ALM and PBR are both going to be resource hogs and LL and the need to reduce energy are two speeding trains out of control heading right towards each other ready to collide. By the time LL gets to trying to introduce PBR, people will have less money and Nvidia may just not even update these kinds of gaming chips that exist now which are power hogs. Also, with PBR, I don't want to spend more money on stuff nor have to pay to upload four textures. All companies trying to push up prices will find people will go elsewhere where it's cheaper.
  12. Find a group or groups of people you connect with. I build and meet with my friends but I don't want to just go to dancing parties. However, I am going to be a Dinkie now and give up being human and the tinies of the Shire have a lot of games...many, many games. Plus, they do other fun stuff or get unusual musicians to come and play like a solo violinist and a person who played the hurdy-gurdy performed for us. Lots of fun stuff is not very explanatory but I am so tired and exhausted right now. But, honestly, it is fun. I have not been in SL the whole near 20 years SL has been here. I've taken my breaks because sometimes one is just burned out on going to dancing clubs or the music. There are ways to seek out other interesting music but one has to work at it, imo. A Dinkie I know is playing all kinds of unsual music and that is one thing the tinies do, play all kinds of unusual and interesting music. It's rarely hit radio style if at all.
  13. Assuming is correct. Many of the best creators in SL have used full perm templates and some are charging $2500 linden for them (very well known stores). Even the best creator in SL known for her textures used a full perm item I saw recently and she didn't even bother to change the color but she did link it to another one that she did change the color of so it looked like at least one part was different. Gachas were also full of full perm items. I know many full perm items because I look a lot but most in SL don't. There is nothing wrong with creators using full perm items, imo. It depends on how good their texturing of it was which some creators in SL can make it look marvelous. This is all just me sayin'. I don't have time to get into a discussion about other's opinions on it. But, *assume* it's not a full perm template is correct, and you also may be buying it.
  14. I don't feel that way at all as a merchant. I have Summer items and Halloween items on sale now but I also have random items on sale as well. I also always have 50 to 75 linden items too that are always that price. This is how real life retail works as well. As far as me, I love the sales too but don't always buy since I enjoy being a Dinkie and can easily make all my own stuff for my Dinkie. I splurge when it's a special time like my rez day or because I have had a special occasion. But, it's rare I splurge. If prices go up with this PRB thing where you need to pay for four upload in textures, I think prices will go up too much at a very bad time when it's said we could have a deep and prolonged recession. But, I don't want to really get into a discussion about prices going up and recessions on anything sl or rl.
  15. For tinies and Dinkies, since we are very small animal avatars, 1024's aren't always needed but, for the most part, most everything does look better in a 1024, except maybe scripted grommets on shoes. I don't know how to do multi quotes so I will just address some of the things you said. Yes, I know each region has limited scripts they can run but I find most lag occurs with heavily scripted things, especially Halloween with all it's "effects" and Christmas, too, with all the snow, twinkling lights, etc. So, I'd say scripts have difficulties even if as you say they are "server side". As far as missing the original Lindens, SL was just better then I can't believe the original Lindens who sold LL to this new company would recommend their viewer be set lower than FS's recommended 2. The LL viewer recommends one set their LOD at what 1.175?! This low load thing kills about half the objects in SL. @ the Devs, this low viewer LOD isn't a good idea. And, the new company is responsible for this horrible EEP, which is a hassle. Granted, EEP is a bit better now than when the first viewer arrived but it's still a hassle. Brights are too blown out or it's too dark or it's fiddle, fiddle, fiddle. We just need a lighting that is easy to work and pretty. Plus, ALM and EEP cause fan issues. The fan issues are listed throughout this thread. As far as unlimited hardware, the new hardware or chips being made now are going to be energy efficient. I don't know if energy efficient equals a "game" to be played on the computer like the new LL seems to want. And, it does seem also the new LL wants SL to be turned into a game now.
  16. While I appreciate what Fluffy and what you Ernst are saying about 1024's but some items just do not look good lower than a 1024. It's a some do, some don't kind of thing. What I was wondering and hopefully some geeks know more (I am not a geek) are you sure all the scripts in all these huds aren't causing lag? I mean creators are scripting every part an avatar wears, even for like the grommets on shoes. Are you sure all these scripted huds aren't causing the lag because having the LOD down to 2 is ridiculously low. I just went to a human party with the LOD at 2 and items were dead, even some of what people were wearing. It was a terrible way to enjoy a party at LOD 2. I'm usually a Dinkie and we don't script (hud) items very often. We sell color by color or a fatpack with many colors but no hud and it's NOT laggy. Tinies and Dinkies tend to build optimized for everything though too. What is the problem with SL? It never was this laggy before EEP, not for me, and I've been here on and off over 17 years. And, I mention EEP because this is when my lag really started with the human avatar. I miss the original Lindens. And, forced ALM is going to kill people's laptops. Forcing this is a bad idea. You build another viewer, if people migrate there, fine. If they don't, they don't. Meanwhile, this LOD is absurd.
  17. When I first started SL eons ago I thought we were supposed to be ourselves, have our hair color, look our age, etc. For me, I'd like to be an avatar that is younger, about 18-19; a female avi that has a young look, has a young wardrobe, and I'm not talking about being Kawaii, I mean just younger yet acts like myself. But, I am so much older I fear I would not be able to pull it off and people would keep saying "you are a lot older than your avatar, aren't you?"...or something like that. So, I think the whole thing with being in an avatar we are not is that insecurities come up and we fear being judged, and it's similar to stage fright. But, no on likes being judged, let alone thinking we'd be made fun of. We need to put our insecurities into perspective though and realize we are own worst critics and most people would not care nor know if you are just interacting as friends. The people who would care are the one's who might be misled by lies into a love relationship. But, entering a love relationship on the internet is iffy, imo. It's not something I'd do, plus I'm too busy to commit to a serious internet relationship. It's just not possible for me to commit.
  18. This is it in a nutshell and even if you are any other kind of avi, at the heart of it, just be yourself. I haven't read the whole thread yet so someone may have already said this: I think people may ask this question because of that thing called "stage fright". Some may feel like they have to actually "act" and/or play a part. I have never been another gender on SL but if I were I'd be a model and make clothes for him but I think I might have a bit of stage fright having a go at being a gender I am not. I have stage fright. I've had it since I was a child and the teacher picked me in 2nd grade to be Cinderella for a school play and I cried and cried and cried before the performance. I was hysterical; my parents could barely calm me down. It was horrible. The play finally did go on, though. Happy ending to my story but I don't even remember how I remembered any of my lines I had such terrible stage fright.
  19. Age related? Possibly as women have been the main shoppers of the world. I don't know how it stands today with shopping as to who is doing the most shopping in a relationship, for example. As far as a gender, I've never played a different gender. And, it's for expense reasons though some of the male avatars are just gorgeous, I can't afford it just for "play" hobby and photographs. The only reason I'd want to shape a male avatar is for photos, but I've thought about building now. But, I could do male clothes. I'm on a wait and hold regarding building right now though as a SL building transition seems to want to take place. But, don't talk about building transition here, there is another thread about it. I just mean I would not spend money right now to build.
  20. They should have two viewers. This is all sounding very expensive. The tinies of the Shire just had an 18th year anniversary Medieval Ball. Raglan Shire sim hasn't changed in 18 years and I doubt they would ever change even in 180 years. The thing with PBR, I've read is it is a standard for commercials. Commercials on YouTube, I'd gather. And, that sounds like it will make things very, very expensive. Many people are here for fun and friendship, not commercialization. PBR is probably something along the lines you'd see on a Jazz YouTube video, like the one below and which are springing up all over the place on YouTube. If people, love, friendship really do matter, they'd spin this new commercialized viewer off like they did when Sansar was created.
  21. LOL. But, painting by hand on certain areas is still useful. I mostly layer but every once in a while it needs just a splash here or there for just a bit of something extra and layering is not needed.
  22. Okies. I see. Yes, that's the bits and pieces thing I'm trying to find the words for. So, that's still a go. Oh, thankies! That's great. In the photo I shared from that video it kind of threw me because his stuff doesn't look textured so I thought it meant it is just colored. Why he didn't texture much I'm not sure but I don't think I'm going to learn much randomly trying to hit videos on YouTube. I've searched Google images too and they all do mostly look like a bunch of marbles but I couldn't find any finished product.
  23. I might be using the wrong term as I know many clothing textures are a mixture of baked stuff and paint but I call them an AO which is not the right term so may be I mean UV map? Well, to further explain, the map for some clothing is in pieces is what I mean, like a pattern laid out with bits and pieces and the Albedo is just a color, and this is where I am lost.
  24. I'm just learning painting by hand myself and it is not easy and some creator's in SL just seem to have a gift for it they are so good at it now. But, you could have fun with it as it's fun, I think. So, I'd say try it! What I'm confused about is that I have a lot of fun layering textures in Photoshop to make a texture and where PS would stand with the PBR system, as well as AO's let's say just for clothing. I don't understand where a clothing AO would fit in the map areas. I wanted to do some clothing but feel maybe I should wait until I understand all this better. Maybe an inworld demonstration or lecture on PBR would be helpful.
