  1. I've seen some that do go for a more subtle effect. I'm not talking about the garters - yeet those into the sun. The stay-up stockings, though - some of them look okay. A lot of it also depends on the overall body shape you start with. Those things can easily go from "okay I can see that, that looks nice" to "omgwut" real quick!
  2. I'm not bothered by any of those add-ons. I just think they look way less realistic than they're aiming for. Line up the fabric to the thigh squish properly and I'd stop whining about that. I haven't taken a good look at the arms, so I can't complain about those yet. 😂 I'd never buy them personally, just like I'd never wear stuff that did that to me in RL, but I don't find it hypocritical for women to like them. There's a biiiiiiiiig difference between both of those.
  3. *whispers* No, that's just a grift, shhhh. Nah I'm kidding. Real talk - Zuck's not charismatic enough to be considered a cult leader. 😂 Okay okay lemme stop. Back on topic, guys! Cults in SL...ready, set...go! Edit: Wait - have any of us actually checked in-world Search for known cult names to see if anything actually comes up? Not that I imagine anything would, but that'd be funny if it did.
  4. Oh yeah, podcasts would be big in that space, I'd imagine. My brother's into True Crime podcasts (still NOPE for me!), and I know there are plenty of those around.
  5. Oh for me, it's just terrifying. I can read horror books all day long (grew up on them, in fact), so I'm no stranger to creative minds and horrifying scenarios, but when things get too real (like the True Crime genre), I run off screaming, lol. Oddly, I watch a lot of criminal trials (because the "why/how????" morbid curiosity takes over and it sounds like a great idea in the beginning) - but then I regret it when more and more evidence gets presented - the journals and notebooks, the plans, the diagrams, the criminal saying yeah sure I did it AND, AND??? (or worse, the insanity plea and the evidence that follows THAT) - yeah that...that's when it gets to be too much for me. 😂 I'm too squeamish for it, despite how utterly fascinated I am with the darker side of human mind.
  6. Yeah, it's wild. Not only that a person can be so susceptible to something like that, but that there are people who know exactly how to manipulate them. This is why I can't watch documentaries on this stuff, despite how much I'd love to. Am I fascinated by it? Yup. But yeesh, the more I learn, the less I wish I knew!
  7. Yup. There's more, too. Recruitment, propaganda, and yeah coercion at times. Usually a central figure (not always) leading the thing. I'm blanking out - wasn't there one in fairly recent history that was getting ruthlessly trolled on Twitter? It was a Doomsday variety - the leader kept swearing a meteor would smack the Earth on a specific date or something wild like that. Anyway, I remember people hopping on Twitter the morning of the predicted calamity and joke-tweeting through it. It was amusing, naturally, but also quite scary, because many really DID believe that nonsense. Gah, I can't remember which one that was.
  8. Hmmm. That's a more creative use of the word I suppose. But I don't consider things like that cults. More like fads orrrr...what's the word. My brain isn't working today. Like the whole influencer culture thing. It can be quite toxic at times. Just look at travel bloggers who make hotel workers' lives a living hell lol. But that I wouldn't use "cult" for. There's another word that I can't think of at the moment. Cults I typically associate with what Silent just mentioned. Or Doomsday cults. And yeah, Heaven's Gate for sure. Things like that.
  9. Mayyyybe it's just me, but I've never heard the term used positively. And rarely the actual groups themselves using "cult" as a description. Outside of an attempt to be edgy, anyway. Rahhh fear us - the Cult of Cthulhulululololololz. 🤣
  10. Oh man. I play everything. Ok well almost (not horror). Let's...let's not talk about my insane collection - much of it free, thanks to Epic giving away like, everything over the course of several years now. Btw, totally off-topic for a sec, but if you're a fan of that, check out Use Your Words (it's on Steam and consoles I believe). That game's amazing.
  11. Oh! Wait! My bad, I do remember you saying once that you played MMOs, too. Oops! I swear my memory. 😂 Sorry about that.
  12. I think he clarified pages back that he meant $99USD a year. I think...something like that. Anyway, your point still stands. $99/year might still be too much for someone on a tight budget (especially if their entertainment budget is already filled with streaming services and whatnot).
  13. I'm the suuuuuuuuuuuper squeamish type, but there are actually lots and lots of multiplayer games you can play with other people that don't involve anything that intense at all. Fall Guys, Stardew Valley (there's a teensy bit of combat but it's all pixelated and not graphic), Jackbox party games, Gang Beasts (that's a funny one!), Human Fall Flat, various fishing games, Minecraft, Fortnite (yup there's shooting but no blood and when you die you just glitch out and disappear), Overcooked 1 and 2, car racing stuffs, Rocket League, etc. Lots, really. Oh, quick edit: Massively multiplayer is a slightly different category. For some of the ones I listed, you'd need to bring in your own peoples. But there are some fairly chill massively multiplayer games, too. Fall Guys is definitely up there and you can jump in totally alone and still be with lots of people. It's also going free-to-play later this month.
  14. This is all so true. Running clubs is so expensive - paying staff and DJs, paying live performers, land fees, buying furnishings/decor, stream rentals, etc. And it's not easy to earn it back, either. That relies on some very generous and loyal fans/customers, and that type of fanbase takes time to build. It sounds like such a fun thing to make, so I can see why there are soooooo many, but reality hits hard after the first month's bills do. 😂
  15. Yup! That was my initial point earlier in the thread. As outsiders, there's absolutely no way for us to know what exists and to what extent. None of that would be public IMO. Totally agree, though I went with the more common definition (Jonestown, etc.). So, no RP at all. Just real people actually following someone charismatic for whatever reason. Recruitment does happen on the Internet in general - on regular websites and social media - so it's interesting (to me, at least) to wonder if such things exist within SL. Me and my morbid curiosity again. 😂 Nah, I agree here, too. To me, that's entirely different. Hate groups, anti-*insert group here* groups, etc. Absolutely a thing, and some DO appear in search. Those absolutely DO exist (and it's all quite vile).
  16. Well darn. I was genuinely interested in discussion about actual cults in SL. Maybe this is not the best place for it, but it's a fascinating subject nonetheless.
  17. A definition would be helpful, too. I still have no idea what that means. Then again, it's likely off-topic, since we're discussing examples of cults in-world. Or...something. I think? 🤷‍♀️ This thread is somewhat confusing.
  18. Is there a reason why you keep attacking everyone's age? This forum is a mix, demographically. We've got low 20s and above on here. What exactly is your point? Nvm, don't answer that. *wanders off to more pleasant threads*
  19. And this is how you lose people instead of bringing them over to your side.
  20. I'm not convinced, really. Half because I don't believe "Meta" is going to influence that much overall as their reputation is so far in the toilet at the moment and half because they haven't even really articulated what their ideas even are yet. What are they planning to do? All I've seen are some low-budget looking VR platforms with half-bodies floating around in personal space bubbles because lol what is moderation. What's the grand idea here that's going to change how the entire world does business (I'm asking them more than I'm asking you, don't worry!)? And yes, I've seen the videos they've posted on their socials about mixed reality and all that. If all of this requires VR, that's me absolutely out.
  21. You've got a far more optimistic view of NFTs than I do! I'm still waiting to be convinced (in general, not by anyone here of course) that it's anything more than a scam. And I definitely don't have to tell you how deeply unpopular they are in the gaming universe in general as I'm sure you've already seen how THAT goes firsthand! Hey u guyz, check out mah new game with NFT... *tons of unfollows, Reddit threads, thinkpieces, and a few Kotaku articles later* Hey u guyz, I hear you and I'm pulling the NFT portion of my project... 😂 As for SL retention and draw, I agree with Scylla - getting people into the world and fully dressed is the biggest hurdle as of right now methinks. I didn't even think about land for a loooooooong time when I first joined.
  22. I understand where you're coming from, but I just don't believe that's the right way to go on this platform. I can't speak for everyone, of course, but turning Second Life into a corporate playground (again) is the fastest way to get me to leave permanently. I can't tell you how fast I run away from games (I knowww guyyys I know it's not a game *beeps all of your noses*) and developers that start promoting NFTs and real-world advertisements/branding. SL is my refuge away from all that shenanigans.
  23. Right?! I've recently teleported places and stopped and stared like damn...windlight is straight up gorgeous sometimes. That happened at a cyberpunk store that was pitch black outside with neon signs and lights reflecting all over the place - the pavement, the building, the metal railings, my own leather pants!!! I think SL is so so much better than it used to be - both visually and "stuff to do" wise. As for real life companies making an appearance, well, count me among those who aren't into that at all. I hated it when they all piled in simultaneously back in 2006 or 2008 or whenever it was. It seemed so...forced.
  24. I was gone for close to 12 years! I came back out of pure curiosity - does it still exist? Did they ever make SL2? LOL. Then I was told about mesh and was completely freaking lost! Had to learn that whole entire thing from the ground up (and it was right when Omega was being phased out, so stores were a weird mix of appliers vs. BOM and that was a whole other thang to try and figure out!). I can say now though that things look a lot better than they used to. Incredibly inefficient on the avatar/shopping side, but hey. At least we look kinda cute in our confusion!
  25. I got like that for a bit. I dipped out of SL for yeaaaaaaaaars. But that's because some of my closest friends left and I was feeling the lonely! But when I came back in 2020, I realized...not a whole lot had changed, really. The same stuff I used to do I could still do. Now with mesh and better lighting! 😂
