XP still works for most peoples needs , in fact that tiny bit of memory is likely still what makes a modern laptop work , it just needs another 15+ gb memory for bloatware .

The ipad i hate because its touchscreen but evidently as never once been asked to fix the girlfriend's despite 4 grandchildren , the eldest being 9 and having used it without direction since before he could walk says it all . Medicine might be described as evil but nobody cares so long as it works .

Win10 actually works , I used it for a couple of years thinking surely i will get used to the fact that it compares like win7 taking an elevator to the top of the Eiffel Tower and win10 instead whips people forcing them to climb the stairs , but yeah it works . But only until the next forced update whereby all the junk you don't want and turned off get turned back on again . It tries to change your browser and your printer no longer works but it only takes about 8 dedicated hours to undo all the damage the update caused and so you will be good for a few days , or maybe a week , or sometimes even a whole month before a forced update again trashes your computer . My win7 laptop is very old (15 years?) and still does all i need from a computer . Its not liking SL any more but am i going to pay upwards of £600 just so i can login to SL .................... If you put your car into a garage for a valet it should be returned to you clean . Should the garage instead choose to give your car a full paint respray , then the result above all and any other consideration can only be called criminal damage . My car/computer = my choice .

Just found this on the firestorm website "Windows 8.1 and 10 and 11, 32bit and 64bit, are supported. Earlier versions of Windows are not supported." so yeah firestorm is dead for win7 . Win8.1 is no longer hindered by the virus they call windows update so might try that once i've increased ram .

4GB RAM soon to be 8gb and 64bit , i5 M520 has until now just about worked with the 32 bit download but the latest firestorm just crashes before it loads saying update graphics . Asking because there really doesn't seem much point in trying other viewers .

Sings Cheers theme tune "where everyone knows your name" That place has been a full days travel away for me in rl these past 20 years , but i found it for a little while in sl . As with rl some i liked and some i didn't and im sure it was reciprocal , but there was a sort of disjointed consistency to it all . A community in which to fit or at least find your place . As random as it may be open/public chat works , I'm pissed of because i have a flat tyre and someone i don't know is over the moon because they just passed their driving test . What can i do but congratulate them and with a smile remember when i'd have walked 20 miles to collect a motorbike with a flat tyre aiming to push it home if someone had said i could have it . A single relevant sentence provokes opinion and prompts chatter , suggest you could murder a bacon butty in any group chat and watch the munchie virus spread until people are sharing full recipes not with friends but with random strangers who may become acquaintances , and its acquaintance not friendship that makes a community . Destination guide is so newbies can kill some time checking out places that don't interest them much .

You're all planning day trips to be taken on a foreign holiday , while the newbie has no idea which country nor how to get there . Options are fine , add another 1000 that i won't care about and will never use . Ask yourself this - why are new players often easily recognized because they are running everywhere and can't find the walk button ? I use Firestorm because i was told by all and sundry right from the beginning that is the best viewer . But today i'm wondering why as standard i have about 16 tabs at the top of my viewer all of which should be under a single tab labelled settings . This would make room for a teleport history tab . Lost nothing , just cleared the clutter thus offering the new player simple basic function from which to evolve . 30 years of VHS , billions sold and earned , yet it will always be generally accepted that nobody ever learned to program the things because basic function was good enough .

I was never an introvert , indeed when i settled in to SL i spent most of my time text chatting in public to keep other people engaged and entertained . But as time went on i slipped into a if you can't beat em then join them attitude, and so now i fit right in by disliking everybody by default . I speak when spoken to which provides distraction about 5 minutes a month . Blinded by the light . I searched google for the opposite of Geek and got no answer because its forbidden nowadays to say normal . Geeks are incapable of seeing things from a perspective not entirely based on their own learned "skill" for want of a better word . Introduce somebody who has no interest in computers to SL and every time they ask "why" you have identified a problem that should be fixed . I had never heard of SL, I was just looking for something different to do because browsing classic cars for sale on ebay to kill time was getting old . Expectations were absent, it was just a curiosity , and what kept me coming back was having too much free time to fill and the nagging supposition that there has to be more to SL than the desolate abandoned ghost town of a game that i found ?

I can't speak for LL but the clue is in the name "Second Life" When you have to build up to checking your emails and it feels like you age 6 months every time your phone rings , then your probably the boss . In SL i found a way to interact with the world from the flip side where nobody expected me to make all the decisions and provide all the answers . I wasn't looking for or expecting anything but for a while i found escapism .

New accounts are preyed upon by old accounts but 99 in every 100 new accounts are the alts of old accounts lol . Edited thanks to Maitimo who pointed out my math was ass about face lol .

Theresa Tennyson I explained earlier in this thread that a lot of things didn't work for me when i first started because inexplicably i had 5000 odd items in my inventory the very first time i opened it in my first or so of SL . Months later i learned by accident how to clear inventory cache and so things did start working . I do use the recent tab now because i'm not new but at first stuff was there and then it wasn't - why ? Oh right i can go into setting so stuff hangs about longer , but again - why ? Why do i need a recent tab and an inventory when i only own 10 things because im a newbie ? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You know how all of these things work so you can spend hours tuning things to your preference at your hearts content . Somebody who only signed up to have a look what its all about is not interested in fine tuning an experience they have yet to find .

I did none of them things , i used it once then just didn't bother with it for more than a year . Only thing i'm certain of is its not called a boat or a yacht or anything remotely nautical . Its not about me anyway , when a new player tries on something new and doesn't like it ,then wouldn't it be nice if the thing they took off - their last purchase - was right there at the top of inventory . Incidentally , my inventory system is to remember what its called and type it into the search box because i couldn't make head nor tails of where things went when i was new .

How will that help when i have no idea what the boat is called ?

I lost a boat ? Maybe it was called something sensible like "zugabob p4" and i'm spelling it wrong ? shrugs who cares its lost and gone forever because i have no intention of rezzing a few thousand things to find it . What if i have bought about 50 things since then and so if i scroll down through my inventory it might be found in 51st place . Nah too easy that it would confuse all the geniuses.

I have never played another game on a laptop ,I couldn't even name one . I never had facebook or twitter or anything similar . My phone does not have internet . In the 15-20 years i've had internet access i have voluntarily signed up to maybe 4 forums seeking an answer to some specific question and to second life . So i remember being a newbie very well indeed . Newbies can't ask about things they don't know . If i could have found someone to ask during that first week "how do i get back to where i was" my second question would be "whats a teleport"

And fix the inventory by always putting most recent purchase/acquisition at the top so the thing you bought first will eventually be item 5000 at the bottom of your list . Like the pointless recent tab which only confuses new players .

I am dumb , lazy , impatient and wherever else you want to call me . But i remember how things begun for me in SL very clearly because it was all so alien to me . I was adopted by the most patient of people who taught me the same thing over and over again , eventually accepting with good grace that i must be typing with my elbows and i will never learn . Imagine my frustration whilst knowing i was following the instructions given to me exactly and they did not work . During that time I got to know a regular crowd at a club and public chat was the norm . That as a newbie i had 5000 odd items in my inventory that i never put there confused everyone and it was pure chance that i mentioned it because i didn't know it wasn't normal . Nobody had an answer . Maybe a month after that an old hand suggested to someone else in public chat that it might be helpful to go some place quiet and clear the inventory cache . I did just that and wouldn't you know it all of a sudden all the things i'd be taught that didn't work now did . Before all that i remember being stuck and clicking every button on the viewer until i seen teleport ? hmmm captian kirk used to teleport didnt he ............. and finally i could get back to where id come from . "There must be more to SL than this" is what had me return time after time for that first month . And then i found coherent public chat , words that meant something if nothing important . Digital cartoon characters actually being people !?! It was a strange revelation - potentially interesting , possibly worth investing time , effort and money in .
