  2. Qie Niangao wrote: wherorangi wrote: i had a quick nosey to follow up on what Qie said about 6-digit decimal precision in LSL Oh eep! I did kinda say that, now that I look back, but I only meant the fixed 6-trailing-digit representation when a float is cast to a string, as had been mentioned before in this thread. I just used "precision" imprecisely, with precisely the same imprecision as the function being labeled "fixedPrecision()" which might more accurately be called "fixedPoint()". sorry. I didnt mean to infer that you said something you never did you just triggered me to go off and have another read about it all
  3. Madelaine McMasters wrote: Facebook may not be a channel for the serious, but it's soaking up a considerable amount of humanity's concentration. A Rick Ellis quote from your post... ""When we were the only channel then we had to cater for everyone. From the serious to the not serious." Do you wonder if the ratio of serious to not-serious is affected by all these new ways of communicating? just on this part, some more thoughts. I will come back to the big data thingy separate + i think Mr Ellis was more making the point that back in the day all things and all people passed thru their gate. Which is no longer the case for them i think also we can look at the alternative meaning of concentration of people, in a urban drift sense. Which is what you are touching on I think also like Google is the biggest internets city, Facebook the next biggest, with others also quite big like Bing, Amazon, Baidu, etc. all the way down to towns like SL and further down to little hamlets in the back of nowhere and people are attracted to the big cities. The larger population. We see opportunity for ourselves in this. We see others going there so we go to see what they are going there for. And so on. The bright lights effect the difference (between the physical and digital worlds) is that our travel time to get to the big internet cities, and the little hamlets, is pretty much zero. And we can simultaneously be in more than one place at the same time + i think this capability changes how we concentrate our minds on things. As a body (the mass of people) we are far more multi-tasking our minds when processing information these days. Far more so than in the days prior to the internets more people in previous times processed information linearly. One thing after another at a more leisurely pace. Which had more to do with the available channels at the time than our mental capabilities I think. Like 1 TV channel, 1 newspaper, 1 lifetime employer, 1 school, 1 curriculum, 1 radio station, etc not in every case for sure. But for many of the masses this was the case. And in the urban drift to the internets cities, we can be seen to be perpetuating this (perceptively and/or actually) thru our choices and actions + a counter to this is the example often found in places of learning like we can and do and did read more than one book at a time, when pursuing our understanding of a topic. And even more books and sources simultaneously when studying multiple topics. Books from multiple sources. Multiple authors, distributors and providers and is the basis for my disagree with these few scholars and editors. Seems to me that all they can see at this time are the bright lights of the big city and when the lights dim or go out in the big city, then what
  4. i think where some people who see themselves as serious people (and they usually are, like scholars and that) and wish to communicate their thoughts with the masses, do struggle with is their understanding of the masses, and the choice of channels the masses choose, and why they choose the channels they do take FB as example. Is a channel for the masses. The masses use it for its stated purpose and for little else. FB is a social communication channel. Friend and family oriented and light frippery content when the masses as individuals, want serious then they go to other channels for this + i use another example to try explain this was a radio interview with Rick Ellis the head of our biggest public TV broadcaster a while ago. The question asked of him was: "Why is there so much frippery content on your channel now, like reality shows, cooking contests, light movies, breakfast talky shows, and such stuff. What happened to all the serious stuff that used to be on your TV channel ? " and he said (paraphrase): "When we were the only channel then we had to cater for everyone. From the serious to the not serious. And we programmed accordingly. Today we are not the only channel. If people want serious then theres any number of streaming services available today that provide this. And are able to provide the time needed by the viewer to be able to concentrate on the content matter so as to better understand it. Which we cant compete with. When we devote a large amount of time to a particular topic then more people turn us off than turn us on. Like if we run a rugby game then more people are not interested in watching rugby than are, even in a rugby mad country like NZ. So they turn us off. Which is true for any other topic also what we have found since the onslaught of streaming services is that TV today is background noise, in the same way that radio is. So we have to provide stuff that can be consumed in very small timewise soundbite/voxpops" he further said: "It isnt that people are easily distracted or have low attention spans. They just arent concentratiing on us anymore, even when the TV is on. Serious content requires concentration. Which people are less willing to give to us, given what else they can now concentrate on in their lives" this is what guys like Mark Zuckerberg understand also. FB is not a channel for the serious. For the same reasons. People (the masses) dont concentrate on what they see on FB people go elsewhere for stuff that requires time to concentrate + seems a bit weird to me following this debate, being lead by scholars and editors pretty much like the argument: "43% of FB users use FB as their primary source of news. Therefore FB has a editorial standard of duty and care applicable to news dissemination" the thing is that the scholars themselves post this news and other such scholarly content on FB, and then demand that FB practice an editorial duty that the editors and scholars apply to themselves what the scholars dont seem to be getting is that the channel (FB) is the completely wrong channel for their works is bit like printing a scholarly essay in a oldschool Sunday tabloid. The readers dont get the tabloids to read this stuff + if I did have any advice for the scholars and editors who are in this debate then it would be: stop posting your stuff on FB bc if you dont then it wont be Mr Zuckerberg's fault if he ends up owning 99.99% of news and scholarly works dissemination on the internets
  5. the only thing I got left to suggest is to have a go with the LL viewer available for obsolete hardware/systems is here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Alternate_Viewers the one you want to try is: Second Life Obsolete Platforms Viewer version 3.7.28.300847
  6. i had a quick nosey to follow up on what Qie said about 6-digit decimal precision in LSL + am pretty sure the LSL float is compliant with IEEE754. At least 754-1985. Not sure about 754-2008 tho, given that this came out after SL started. Altho 2008 is a superset of 1985 so am not sure it would make a lot of difference in practice for LSL math compliant meaning as the LSL math engine is implemented, then in the range [1 to 6] of significant decimal digits there are no gaps in the numbers. That all numbers of 6 significant decimal digits or less (regardless of where the decimal point is) can be reached and any calculation on these will be accurate (precisely correct) provided that the sum, and all subsums of the workings, are also less than or equal to 6 significant decimal digits + is possible to get 7.22 decimal digit precision (24bits), however I think that without testing every LSL-produced value above 6 digits in a math suite test then probably best to stick with 6 when/if accuracy is required where the 7th digit can be relied on tho to be always accurate is when the quotient is 0. eg. 0.000001, 0.999999 + if we did want a larger precisely accurate range in our LSL app then we pretty much have to use some kinda LSL-written bignum float math module + i just also add a note about LSL rounding LSL uses binary rounding out-the-box. Which makes sense given that most LSL apps float math involves vectors and rotations. Binary rounding is overall more closer to accurate for these kinda calcs if we do want currency rounding then have to do the +/- 0.005 thing ourselves
  7. if you have already written the script and are just having a issue with the HUD attaching and detaching, then in the Scripting forum can post the part of the script that you think is maybe not working as you want. Am pretty sure someone will identify the issue pretty quick, and give you a steer on what to do about it if you quite a way off overall tho, and given your deadline is approaching fast, then might be best to put a addy in Employment asking for a experienced scripter to help with the project

I think I move in am a bit of a gypsy tho. I move a lot. Am currently kinda share with a friend at the mo on this other place. I did enjoy my time in that apartment tho and all the other times I rented a home space off you. Like as I remember the time before was by the wall after I left the french ish place + i just wanna say that of all the landlords I ever had, which has been heaps, then you (Prokofy Neva) are easily one of the best landlords in SL. You know your stuff. Is all a tenant needs really. A landlord who knows their business well
  9. BilliJo Aldrin wrote: I got rid of the land and it was theirs to do as they wished, but i was still like wtf. back in the day when there were a whole lot more people logging in to SL regularly, land flipping on mainland was quite a regular pastime activity for heaps of people, even if tho it was a tulip activity pretty much. Some made a profit overall, most didnt. Still, lots of people enjoyed doing it as you say. You sold, they bought. They can do whatevs with it. Same now, same then

Mud wrestlers get quite scornless after a few bouts can get even more scornless when get into soapy bath wrestling q: (: + ps. Is about now that is time for another letter to LL: dear LL, please to give us a currency type ok when you got like nothing else better to do one day, other than just turn up to eat your lunch. Or somebody elses bc they brought even more yummy stuff to the work shared lunch tnks (:
  11. i quite like how they handled the sign as well. Is pretty cool

Although, a true Perverted would be able to find something Adult about anything. Or so I've heard. :smileyembarrassed: jejejeje (: i remember a chat ages now on the old forums. Was about who created the First Perversion in SL and the winner by consensus was The Pervert who made the motorcyle rider anim and nobody knows exactly who first it put in a prim that was scripted to move back and forward. Altho a few Perverteds did own up to doing that (:

Is like the Invasion of the Unperverted. They are like rodents, get in anywheres. Is terribl !!! Will be the End Of Times like Total Doom pretty soon I think if this keeps up (:
  14. i dont have the problem either i have Cortana and Xbox turned off on my desktop. From what I have read then these may be contributors. I am not going to turn them on to find out tho (: you might have them turned off as well ?
  15. a thing I can see in your pic is that you are running Avast Anti-Virus ? people have reported in the past that they have had problems with Avast being pretty aggressive in dealing with the binary data that SL uses try turning off Avast and see what happens. Just use Windows Firewall and Defender. Never know, it might be something like that
  16. we always get 6 trailing decimal points in the LSL format string you are right tho about numbers that take more than 24 bits to store their values the way LSL string casting out-the-box works, the upper bound is 8388607.0 . Anything above this and LSL casting will round the string to a whole number with 6 zeroed decimal places when rounding to 2 decimal places then the effective positive lower bound is 0.005. So that will cast ok. Anything less than 0.005 and greater than 0.0 will round down to 0.0 and then if did want to deal with negative numbers then should typically subtract 0.005 instead of adding it like we do for positive values to do a larger number thats stored in more than 24 bits (> 8388607.0) then we have to do what else Rolig said
  17. what Rolig said + if do only want 2 decimal places and rounding up/down then string float2str(float f){ return llDeleteSubString((string)(f + 0.005), -4, -1); } eta. I just add a caveat here before anybody use this as is, then is best to read the points discussed further down in the convo. What the limitations of LSL string casting are

  19. yes basically you are looking for a shield that has a collision detector when a object or avatar collides with you then the shield script will pick this up. What or who collided wih you, and when object who the owner of the object is is a number of shields already on MP that you can buy. Or if you want to have a go at it yourself then there are some collision detection scripts in the wiki library
  20. Freya Mokusei wrote: ETA: In fact, I could see a counter argument. Having one of Pamela's houses on their land already MIGHT give them the information they need (via inspect) to purchase a more original house from Pamela, themselves. If the quality of the sample is good enough, maybe Pamela would get a unique sale just through having proximity. Win-win! i just give a real time example of this i once rented this parcel on this sim which was built to replicate the feel of New Orleans french ish blues. Nice place the parcel was in a row of shotgun shacks. Was pretty cool when I rented then I got land rights, including the right to return objects (incl. the shotgun shack itself) So I did that bc I couldnt mod it, not being mine and I went and bought my own shotgun shack for myself, put on the parcel, and was able to mod + was a win-win-win. The sim owner got to preserve the ambience of the sim. The shotgun shack creator got another sale. And I got to mount position and mod my house as I wanted it to be everybody happy

  23. good score. Good on you (: dunno about turning into a land flipper. Can be the road to ruin that can. Like as mention already, can easy get stuck with the tiers and end up with nothing to show for it sometimes. Is up to you tho. And tbf some people do ok as a real estate dealer + can always build another factory on it. Is not all that many factories on mainland. Like a working factory with moving machinery and stuff like that. Be quite interesting a project like that I think
  24. they do stuff when we log out. Avatars do i have nearly caught mine a few times. But she is ever sooo sneaky. Like when I log in I notice things. and I know she has been up to mischief. With her sekrit friends that I dont know anything about. Am pretty sure they are leading her astray. Those so called friends of hers. They are sooo devious and waaaayy sneaky as well like sometimes her hair a little bit dishevelled, and some other times she only got one shoe on. And like one time she was like total nekkid even. And she just stand there looking all innocent and no melty butter either somebody once try me that was all like servers or something. but I know is her, she is just mischief and trubbl ! I am going to catch her proper one day and then I am going to ground her like forever. and ever and evah even !!! (:
  25. when you say: "put what I want on the parcel". What do you mean exactly by this ? most private rentals estates have a covenant that governs what we can put on them. We have to find a rental that has a covenant that allows us to put down what it is we want there are some private-owned estates that have no covenants and we are allowed to to put anything we like on them, provided we dont lag the sim, or overly annoy the neighbours with our stuff if do want total freedom in what you can put on your parcel then the best option is Mainland, where the landlord is LL itself. Need to get a Premium Account to rent off LL directly tho
