I was actually referring to the graphical part, which was asked by the OP. For example : Gary' s mod is a direct derivative of the Counter Strike Source - engine. SL does not have a 'parent' like that.

There's Windlight too , which was also rendering made by a 3rd party, so you are right about that. It's at least safe to say that SL is not constructed via engines which are typically used by triple A games.

... it' s because we are pattern seeking mamals .. it' s inate in us ... leading us to many false conclusions as you described.

Future of the metaverse, and all that

Unsure about the sequence of occurence, but this happened : 1. IBM pulled out of SL entirely using what they learned from SL internally and applying it to long distance virtual administrator assistance. 2. LL pulling out of the hypergrid. -

I doubt I can do better than Diva, one of Opensims coders, who already years back described why the hypergrid is unacceptable to Lindenlab. They will not opensource their server code. It would be to their own detriment. ETA : FYI I'm not a coder. -

First : this will still not prevent hosted regions stealing data from said users travelling to their regions if the service was paid for by the host. And .. if implemented .. how much do you think such a fee would cost whilst pricing of regions within LL's own grid are high already ? Why would anyone pay such high fees ? Besides that, you are also bypassing the financial system LL put into place. They will not share it with others. Too many caveats. -

Because of copyright, or better DRM, this is impossible. The inventory travels with the avatar with each teleport. It' s also the reason LL backed out of Opensim altogether. Not going to happen. ETA : It would at least require that all assets of everyone would become a CC license. -

Afaik SL is OpenGL based, not sure if there' s a specific engine. 3D models are usually made with programs like Blender and exported as *.bvh files or Collada and then imported, preferably after heavy optimization. I'm unsure if I'm giving you the right pointers. There's also a technical forum here. Perhaps you'll get the correct answer there.
