Unless you enjoy being a bit of a pest. i think that ban lines & security orbs are wrong .. arent a good idea .. are a form of griefing .. iv had my inworld experience directly compromised by them when they caused me to loose my cat & i got my sailboat hung up in them .. i resent that .. causing me & others grief w/ the damn things is worse than my going in2 someones house to look around or even have sex on their sex bed when they arent inworld & not even having them know i was there when they get back .. my activities harm no1 or nothing but this isnt true of ban lines .. its the possessive paranoid ppl who want to keep all their virtual stuff theyre so proud of having spent real money on who are the pests .. not me :catwink: Jeanne

Jeanne If you set your Home position inside your house, it doesn't matter how high it is. Open world map and at the top right it says something like "Go Home" or "Home." Click that and voila! You're back home - in my case over 3000m up. :matte-motes-big-grin: You're right...I'd get tired flying up that high!! I've fallen off my building platform a few times without my Mystitool on (has a built in flight assist) and takes forever just to fall that distance....lol. oh i know i could set 'home' to my skyhouse Czari .. but my main space is on the ground .. i have a sleeping pad there & a table w/ food & an altar w/ candles down there .. my sisters house is on the surface & our Zooby cat is down there .. i only go up to the skyhouse when i want to hold or nurse Zooby baby Jaques or for privacy w/ my bf .. so 'home' is on the ground & i fly up & jump down from the skyhouse .. but thanks for the advice! Jeanne I can see your point on banlines "causing" grief - for one thing they're ugly (well the red ones I still see are :matte-motes-tongue:) but then the viewers, or at least Phoenix, added the option to turn ban lines off. That helps with the viewing blight but doesn't do anything for people trying to manuever around them. (I commend you for trying your hand at sailing. I'm absolutely the worst trying to navigate any type of vehicle. I rezzed a motorcycle at a private sandbox years ago for members of Isle of Wyrms. A whole bunch of dragons were not happy campers when I plowed into them due to my lack of being able to "drive" well...or at all. Yeah, never did that again...lol.) I'm a proponent of security orbs if one wishes to secure their land. The newer ones (at least the one I bought a few years ago) have warning times up to 60 secs. - MUCH better than 10 secs. which I do think is not enough time to even read the warning sign. As for flybys - I'm wondering if there are less of them now. Another thread awhile back was talking about some high tech form of griefing I'd never head of while, back when I started SL, flying monkey head particles, being orbited or caged were the main griefing tools. Flying around someone's home in the sky may not be the in thing now. As I said, I haven't experienced it in the last couple of years myself, but thought it was due to being higher up. ban lines are ugly & i didnt see the ones my boat hit until i was already to close to avoid them .. but i posted awhile back about how ban lines caused me to loose my Zooby cat so they are worse than just looking ugly .. there was no reason for those ban lines to be across that narrow stretch of water either .. i coulduv made it thru in my boat had they not been there LoL thats funny about running over dragons w/ a motorcycle .. as far as causing trouble with vehicles & ppl prowling around private sims & the need for 'security' orbs .. i like to prowl around deserted sims myself & one time i found a helicopter sitting on its pad & there was no1 else around so .. i decided to see if i could make it go .. i got in it & figured out how to make it fly but couldnt control it very well .. so i ended up crashing it into the edge of the sim & it fell outuv the sky into the water .. i figured that id wrecked it & that whoever owned it was going to be really mad .. i was pretty new then & didnt know better .. so i thot id better leave the sim pronto before the owner showed up & saw that id wrecked their helicopter .. so as i was leaving i saw the helicopter sitting where id found it good as new !! so even if someone comes along uninvited & steals your helicopter & wrecks it what harm is done? so why need ban lines or security orbs ?? also when i was new i didnt know about all the stuff up in the sky .. i only knew about the 3 skyboxes kept above the M rated sim where i lived for ppl who wanted to go up to them to have sex .. & i thot the only way to get up to them was to TP up to them .. but then i was given the flight feather & was amazed to discover a whole nother world up in the sky! & i discovered that i could just fly up to those skyboxes .. so i must admit that i was rather bad about flying around to see what was up there .. & may have violated ppls privacy by flying by their skyhouses .. i have a skyhouse now & the TPers to it broke so i just fly up to it & jump down .. i keep it @ 600 m & would prolly put it up higher cept it takes longer to fly up to it if its higher .. iv never seen anyone flying around this skyhouse besides ppl iv invited up there .. in fact no1 hardly ever even comes to the sim where we live & the few that do never cause any trouble so we havent even considered putting up any sortuv security stuff Jeanne

Just some days ago I did want to look on SL highest peak and did flew there, it was so high up that I not could see any borders and I did not flew to near, but as fast I did pass a non visible line I was sent back home while my balloon did go on without me. I think like this; if you want privacy in the mainland, move the house up in the sky (3 000m and upwards) and mark the grifer/security orbs radius with a big sphere. Land is to get prims and can therefor be keept open for all to explore or to have stores in, or to show puplic information about that land owner not want you to peek in to the big and super visible huuse they dod build for they are a bit afraid the furries may steal the flat screen TV. For how often do folk intrude in to the house? I did belong to a group that had Land in Minna, we had a big house there that was open, but even it was in a popular area near Natoma we had very few users, so I just wounder if intruders are a so big problem that folk has to grief explorers, drivers and flight entusiams to protetc ther privace even they not are online? good post Kenny .. i agree w/ you LoL @ furries stealing TVs too .. Our home and deck are not open, yet not a day goes by when someone doesn't attempt to enter our home uninvitied and gets ejected. ltl by ltl iv been learning to sail .. 1st i had to learn to control the boat & to tack against the wind .. that was pretty easy .. then the problem i had was that my boat wouldnt cross sim boundaries .. 3 sundays ago my bigger faster boat wouldnt cross any boundaries .. then 2 weekends ago the smaller slower boat made several crossings be4 crashing .. then this past sunday the larger boat made every sim crossing until it got hung up in those damn yellow ban lines .. im still learning to navigate .. i was following the map but trying to go in pretty much a direct line .. & there was land & stuff in the way & narrow places to go thru .. some a**hole had put yellow ban lines across 1 such narrow place .. the boat got stuck in them & wouldnt move .. so what i did is flew up, took the boat back in2 inv, flew high & set the mysti tool on fasterest & followed the map across many sims to where my sis was DJing .. so for the 1st time i navigated the cruise howbeit only maybe a 3rduv the way in my boat .. next i need to figure out how to set a course that keeps more to the open sea my point being: cursed be any1 who sets those dam yellow lines !! So Mote It BE .. 1st they make me lose my cat & then my boat gets stuck in them .. they suck & so do the ppl who put em up Jeanne I don't use ban lines on my parcel by the ocean, although I could. I use a security system that protects only my house and deck. The water that is on my parcel is open for anyone to use and provides plenty of room to turn a boat around. My house is in a small cove area that is not on the main sailing channel. The people that get ejected are not sailors that have lost control of their boats, but people who deliberately try to enter my home uninvited even when we are there. We had one just last night pop up on our deck and stand on the lounge between my partner and not say a word. It wasn't an accident they did it deliberately. If they someone passing by asks politely I generally have no problem with it will invite them in and chat with them, unless it is not a good time for us. BTW, you can get a HUD that shows on your screen and gives you plenty of advance warning of ban lines so you can steer around them. If you don't have the skill to do that yet you should stay in the area of the ocean that is nothing but open sea. There are a large multi sim areas like that which give you plenty of room to practice your sailing skills without getting stuck or driving your boat into a house. thank you for not putting ban lines across the water yeah .. i need to learn to chart a course from the get go that keeps me & my boat out in the open sea .. its like a maze trying to just sail towards the beacon .. thats my next step! a couple weeks ago i was just trying to follow the other boats .. this was my 1st time trying to follow the map on my own .. it worked & i found my way .. but went thru a bunchuv narrow places & around stuff & ended up just flying over all the land & boats in the way Jeanne

Yes, I am still using a PC that cannot run the updated viewers, thus I use Phoenix. I *was* able to use the SL V2 when it first came out. Logged into it and immediately said..."I don't think so," but once it was upgraded to V3, I could no longer log into V2 I still had installed. Apparently somehow those two viewers "morphed." What is interesting about SL given the differing PC systems one uses (yes I realize I'm using a dinosaur but, from reading the forums, I'm not the only one....lol), and the different viewers, the "shared experience" is not quite totally shared. Throw in individual windlight settings and custom setttings for certain skins and what one person sees within SL can look completely different to another person. Another example - mesh. I can't run any of the mesh viewers currently so people wearing mesh, on my viewer, look odd at best and ridiculous at worst. Oh, and then there are the avatars with gaping holes in them. I should be getting a new PC by the end of the year (although it still gripes me that the one I have is working perfectly for everything else BUT SL), but I may still run non-mesh viewers for the entertainment value....lol .. you need a new pc Czari !! Jeanne Yes I've been told this ad infinitum on these forums. One person went so far as to suggest I get a new "hobby" if my PC wouldn't run the new viewers and another said no one who builds should use anything but the SL v3. I am quite sure you didn't mean the statement in a mean way, Jeanne, but some people have said this to me in a very hurtful way with no idea of my RL circumstances. Sometimes in RL we have to make choices, especially in the current economic situation. On Maslow's hierarchy of needs, a new computer *just* to run a viewer to see mesh in SL is pretty far down the list....lol. oh im sorry Czari .. no i didnt mean it in a mean way @ all .. best wishes! Jeanne

V3 not nearly so bad .. i prefer FS to V3 tho .. but its a moot pt if your pc wont run em so very right you are about things looking different to different viewers & diff settings .. iv looked fine in my viewer & been naked to others before !!! or wearing 2 outfits @ once .. ppl certainly dont see things the same .. depending on pc, viewer & settings .. thats fer sure !! when i had my old puter & mesh came out .. i preferred to use an older version of FS that wasnt mesh enabled cuz it was considerably less laggy .. i had both versions installed but only used the newer when i wanted to wear the 1 mesh skirt i had in inv .. but now mesh is so common that sl would look funny w/out a mesh viewer .. you need a new pc Czari !! There are islands you can't even TP over to. There are islands that let you rez into a corner but the entire island has ban lines. There are also ones that have orbs that boot you out after a time limit. But then there are the ones that let you in but they never really give you any clue if you are welcome there or not. If I see a store, I assume it's ok but if I see just houses I start to wonder if I'm wandering around private land.I know when I look at About Land and it says 'John and Karen's home'. Thats a bit of a clue. If it says, 'Beach club', then I think something else. What do you think? What things indicate that a land is for private or public use? i explore around quite a bit .. mostuv the time i am the only avatar on the sim .. sometimes there are ban lines but usually not .. i tend to stay away from other avatars that might not want me around .. but usually there is no one else around .. so i go where ever i want to & can go .. i go inside houses & look around .. i dont bother anything & couldnt really mess anything up if i wanted to which i dont .. i see no harm in it .. the probability of someone logging in & catching me in their place i figure is very low .. & if it ever happened id be friendly & if they wanted me to leave i would .. where i live once in awhile someone i dont know will show up .. i say 'hi' to them .. sometimes they respond & sometimes they dont .. usually they leave in a hurry .. i dont mind ppl being there .. i dont understand all the paranoia & possessivness some ppl seem to display over avatars in their virtual spaces .. i think ban lines & insecurity orbs are stupid Jeanne

Basically human (or furry or vampire et ) interest stories. I'm sorry for anyone that's been misled in rl , SL or both, but that's not the topic of what I asked and if we can't get back on topic, if any moderators are reading can you close or lock this thread? im married in RL but my husband & i live apart because i moved away to take a job .. i worship a Goddess named Freyja .. she is of a race or species of beings called the Vanir who are highly technologically advanced .. a year ago in August i was lonely .. i was blotting to Freyja and she told me to look on the internet for a virtual world like one of the 9 worlds of Yggdrasil the World Tree .. so i googled "virtual world" & SL came up .. so i read about SL & got an account & downloaded the LL viewer2 that very day .. & logged in i found myself @ this British themed newbie place .. you walked around & it told you how to walk & do stuff & to fly .. i thot fly! i can fly in here ?!? so i got outuv there & flew !! i loved it !! but then i wondered what there was to do so i looked at the magnifying glass icon & opened search .. the first thing i saw was that there was an inworld dance going on for the Second Life Community Convention or SLCC .. so i teleported there .. it was this big dance party with all these avatars dancing around & very good rock music playing .. i was a brand newbie .. hadnt been in SL an hour even i dont think .. so i looked like a newbie & flew like one .. i didnt know how to dance so i was just flying around & trying to land on the big structures above the dance floor .. i wasnt doing it on purpose but i was probably annoying ppl so i get this IM from the DJ asking me if i wanted to come down & dance with them .. she showed me how to dance & saw that i was brand new .. her partner was there & they both started chatting with me by IM .. they told me to go to Freebie Galaxy & get some better clothes & hair & stuff .. they even gave me some L$ that day .. & they told me that after the dance was over i could come to where they lived .. so later on i did .. it was a very nice tropical island themed sim in the middle of the ocean .. they told me i could stay there & mark it as "home" so i could always TP back there .. that was my first day in SL i should also say that the LL viewer2 worked poorly for me & i crashed often & got very frustrated w/ SL .. but then i discovered or was told about Firestorm & this viewer saved me !! i wouldnt have stayed w/ SL had i been restricted to LLs evil viewer .. but anyway ..... over the course of the week i was in SL every day .. the women i met at the dance liked me & decided to adopt me as their sister .. they showed me everything about SL .. they gave me stuff & instructed me about everything .. i have never met anyone as kind & loving & generous as my sisters are .. not in SL or in RL .. soooo... i wasnt lonely anymore !! i had family & all i had to do was login to SL & there they were !! iv always loved music & to my great astonishment my sisters turned out to be the most incredible DJs iv ever listened to .. & that includes commercial radio NPR & SL clubs & dance parties .. they are THE best .. their knowledge of music is encyclopedic & when they are choosing songs they can read their audience & build the energy & sustain it & every song they chose is perfect & even better than the one before .. they inspired me to build my own musical playlists & to re-discover the joy of music so as time went by & i hung out w/ my sisters & followed them around to their gigs i met their friends & was introduced to the clubs & private sims where they DJ .. some of the coolest & finest places in SL .. when they werent inworld i started exploring around on my own & discovered fabulous places .. but i would always TP back home & put my avatar to bed before logging out for the nite .. my sisters helped me with shoes & hair & outfits & gave me stuff & i spent countless hours getting my avatar just the way i wanted her .. much to my surprise i discovered that i must be very attractive cuz i was always being IMed by men who wanted to dance w/ me or invite me to their places or who would give me stuff .. i was a bit intimidated but discovered that i loved all the attention my 1st SL bf was a Dutch guy .. he was nice but his english was weak & the time zone difference got in the way of our relationship .. also he was jealous & controling & demanding .. he did show me how to build @ a sandbox tho & i built a crude house the next guy was quite an intellectual & we were together longer .. come to find out he was into bdsm & he liked to tie me up & be mean .. i didnt really mind this & was willing to play along since afterall nothing really hurts in SL .. but i had bought the Mama Allpa hud & wanted to get the male version for him & wanted to RP being a family .. he scoffed @ this idea so i got to thinking that he only cared about what was important to him & didnt care about what i wanted to do .. so one nite we had a big fite & that was the end of that then i met a guy who already had the male Mama Allpa .. even tho we had slex outside my fertile time i ended up pregnant .. much to my surprise he was thrilled !! the hud said the baby would be a boy so his daddy named him Jaques & bought a Zooby baby .. i really had fun gradually making myself look pregnant with the sliders .. when i was 6 months he said that he was going to Europe for a month & that if i wanted him to be there for the birth it had to be the next weekend so i made myself full term & we bought a birthing animation & my sister delivered Jaques with his daddy there .. it was an amazing experience for all 3 of us !! prolly my best day in SL ever .. after that Jaques daddy proposed to me & i accepted .. he bought me an expensive engagement ring & i thot everything was fine between us .. then 1 fine day he sent me an offline IM saying that he was getting back together with an old friend & would always think fondly of me but .. blah blah .. & i found myself a single mom meanwhile as the months went by i danced & listened to music in many different places & met many different ppl .. my sisters partner DJs for a sailing clubs parties after they sail & i met these sailors & danced with them & was given sailboats .. so i started doing that .. i also started circling with different groups of Witches in SL & made many friends this way .. i was in SL every day & having a great time .. but then disaster struck .. we lost our home sim .. i dont know all the details of how it happened but apparently after everyone had contributed their share of tier & it was due .. the woman who collected it simply disappeared & never paid it .. did she steal the money or did she die or become ill or something? i dont know & if anyone else involved knows they arent saying .. but LL gave us 24 hrs to remove all our stuff from the sim & then it ceased to exist my sisters .. who had been in SL for 5 or 6 years .. sortuv had a crisis over this .. they werent even sure they wanted to play SL anymore .. i owed everything to them & if they werent going to be in SL anymore then i didnt want to be either .. fortunately they resolved the issues & my sisters partner decided to cut way back on her DJing & we found a nice 1/4 sim to be our new home .. my sis gave me a skyhouse to put above it & i also have a space on the surface .. its a lovely place! we have a Zooby cat named Ramona & many different animals wander around & fly around & swim in our waterway then another disaster occured .. i fried my computer with static electricity from the vacuum !! but this turned out to be a good thing in that even tho i couldnt afford it .. i had my brother build me a much better gaming machine .. my computers name is Fenrir & he RwwwwKs! i was finally able to put my settings & draw distance way up & see textures & stuff in all its fine detail & lag hasnt been nearly as bad .. so i started enjoying SL that much more many other things have happened over the course of the 14 months iv been in SL .. clubs have come & gone .. iv met new ppl & lost contact w/ others .. iv developed a knack for inworld fotography & post my pics on FaceBook .. i was given the SAM DJing software & taught how to use it .. i digitalized all of my moms old vinyl albums & am still working on her cassette tapes .. i have my own music stream now ~Annie's Majikal Muzikal Medley~ .. i still follow my sisters to their gigs & dance & serve as informal hostess sometimes .. & iv met a new fellow i like very much .. hes Scottish so we have time zone issues but so far we are getting along very well .. he likes Jaques & we sail together & share music so that .. in a nutshell .. has been my SL story so far .. im sure iv left a lot out but .. hope you enjoyed hearing about my SL  Jeanne

What if others wanted to do the same? thats a good question Charolotte .. i would think it would work like on an Indian Reservation where no1 owns the land but if they want to build a house they go before the "Chapter" or local government & ask for a land use permit .. if its granted they build their house there & corrals for their sheep & horses & get to use the land "as if" they owned it .. meanwhile the common areas where the sheep graze are open to all .. I am one of the many people that do not have a premium membership and I think that LL would lose a ton of people if we had to pay to play the game. I know I'd leave... i dont have a premium membership either Tex .. id prolly leave too if LL imposed a user fee while keeping their current business model in place .. what i want to see is for everyone to pay a user fee in exchange for the abandonment of tier, rent & the L$ .. everyone pays the same & everyone has equal access to anyplace they want to go .. no more pretending to "own land" in exchange for money .. i dont know if you pay tier or rent or not but if you do youre subsidizing all of us who play for free .. so when i call for everyone paying a user fee it is to the advantage of those who do pay tier or rent & to the disadvantage of ppl like me .. & perhaps like you if you play entirely for free .. but i think it would be well worth the modest fee (~$15 - $20 per month) to end class distinctions & limitations on mobility w/in SL .. i recognize that it would mean that some ppl left the game but those ppl dont pay anything anyway & i think that other ppl would be attracted by a more egalitarian inworld society Jeanne

Or are you paid to make such comments by a competitor? Well, let's see now. I have been online daily (sometimes 10 hours a day) for the past six years (annual Premium membership). I have paid Linden Lab about US$20,000 in hard cash. I have worked like a dog to build a business that improves the quality of the SL experience. I have written extensively about Second Life in this forum and my own blog. What have you done for Second Life lately? so since youve given LL about US$20,000 in hard cash worked like a dog & written about SL you think that makes you somehow more important than those of us who havent spent a cent on the game havent built anything & dont have a blog about SL ?? maybe if LL agreed w/ you theyd grant you some sortuv special status over the restuv us .. maybe theyd make you king over a region or something :cattongue: Jeanne

If the economy is a toy then I should be able to buy Lindens with Monopoly money or those chocolate coins. But I am spending real money to get my Linden dollars, and a lot of people pull a lot of real money out of SL. My big problem is that you get nothing but “rental of goods you supposedly buy”, you don't own anything, if LL closes there doors today, unless you have built it and have it on you PC, you have nothing to show for your years in Second Life, and I am not a creator so my thousands of dollars spent are just gone. When the asset server shuts down, its all gone. So what part of that is a toy? Or at least, I look at it differently because I spend real money. & when you die its all gone .. no1 ever really owns anything .. in RL as much as in SL its your choice to spend real money on a toy .. you dont hav2 .. you can enjoy sl w/out spending 1 cent of real money only a very small percentage of players pull real money out of SL .. not "a lot of people" as you say .. for the vast majority the time they spend building or scripting or whatever they do in sl to make real money could be much more lucratively spent doing something in RL .. most ppl dont even come close to making minimum wage w/ their SL activities .. so if they enjoy playing monopoly or the SL economy or any other toy game more power to em .. but for all but the handful of Anshe Chungs its never goin2 to pay off in any kinduv material terms because youve spent all those thousands of real $s you have this investment in SL's continued existence .. so in a sense LL owns you .. owns your allegiance .. i havent spent a single cent in SL so if it disappears today i may be sad but i'll just shrug my shoulders & move on to something else while you lament all the $$$ thats gone down the drain Jeanne

While there are exceptions, my own observation is that people who are above average in the IQ department, creative and forward thinking, have the tenacity to persevere and learn how to get around and do things, are able to entertain themselves without any imposed structure, are sociable, tolerant and are highly adaptable are the ones that really thrive in SL love it and stick around for the long haul. When I first joined SL I tried to get some folks interested but the whole concept was just overwhelming to them. At the time it didn't have a reputation as a sex paradise, so it wasn't that that deterred them. After trying for a while, I've given up. I really don't talk to anyone in RL about it. The few that know I am in SL rarely ask me about it either and when they do quickly change the subject if I don't give them a short concise answer that they understand without a lot of explanation. While I would love to see SL really take off , in a way I'm glad it requires a person as I described above to really make it here. They make the most interesting friends who turn out to be some of my most favorite people. From a social point of view, while there is drama and people such as griefers and other idiots when you stop to think of the thousands of people that come into our virtual world everyday and are able to live work and play peacefully together with only a loose and broad TOS to govern them and no police, formal goverment, or the laws necessary in RL, it makes me think. Its not a utopia and never will be but it is better than RL and gives me hope for the human race. OMG !! i totally agree w/ you ~for once~ Amethyst !! ~faints~~ ~ what im interested in here .. is how to get the newbie who is smart, doesnt require imposed structure, is sociable tolerant & adaptable .. to get over the initial perplexity & hang in there for the long haul .. like you say .. for me that took the encouragement & patient assistance of my sisters & very good friends i had the good fortune to meet rite off the bat dunno if you ever took chemistry in school .. but an analogy that occurs to me is the graph they always show about 'energy of activation' .. theres a hump that must be gotten over be4 the reaction can go to completion .. the initial huh?!? factor of sl is like that hump .. then it starts to be fun & easy .. a catalyst can lower that hump .. so what ~besides meeting or already knowing ppl who can encourage & help~ can be that catalyst for newbies ?? im not sure .. wish i knew tho cuz id like to see cool ppl stick Thanks AJ Jeanne
