  2. Curious Hazelnut wrote: I feel the need to pontificate on the direction that Linden Lab is taking Second Life. Okay, actually on where I want them to take it. As a long time resident I've watched the Lab go through cycles of new features and improving stability many times. I don't see any other way to keep something as grand as Second Life going forward and lasting as long as it has without such cycles. So, here is what I would like to see as the next cycle for second life. A long time ago, I got the opportunity to play with (what was then) a new 3D display that you wore like a helmet. This 3D vision display had 2 screens, one for each eye, and gave a real 3D emersive feel to the one playing with it. It was really amazing, I moved my head and the view shifted with it. These toys have come a long way and now look more like funny glasses than helmets. Both Vusix and Sony have (or will have) products available. Imagine if Second Life supported such things? Would you put on a headset and wander around Second Life in first person without the real world background? I sure would. Something like this takes emersion to the next level. This goes even beyond what 3DTV can do since the headset takes the room you are in away. That's not all I want. Look at how the Nintendo Wii changed interaction with video games? Suddenly your body becomes the controller, swing the wiimote and the avatar's arm move. Then Microsoft took this a step further with the Kinect and your body really is the controller. Play with one if you haven't, the experience really changes things. Think about it? Combined a fully emmersive 3D headset with a Wiimote and suddenly the real world just fades away. When you the wiimote around, your avatar's hand moves. The buttons and controls on the wiimote become the controls for movement in SL, the trigger for "touch". It's almost perfect and all the hardware exists. All Linden Lab needs to do is build real support into the viewer. It's pretty clear that Linden Lab is trying to find ways to bring more people into SL. This would almost certainly do it. How many games are there that truly support that level of immersion? The only down side is it means the viewer would need a 3rd mode of operation: basic, advanced, and real 3D. Where do you hope Linden Lab takes Second Life? my understanding is that something like what you describe was Philip Rosedales original intention for SL .. a helmit & gloves & such for the entire virtual reality experience .. but it didnt work out imagine tho .. going into a sensory isolation chamber where you float in really dense salty water exactly @ the isothermal temp in total darkness in the soundproof chamber .. & you wear glasses w/ miniature screens & earfones & a body suit w/ appliances attached to your genitals for slex .. & theres even perfumes & odors that can be released in there so that when you see flowers or a skunk or something you smell it too .. & if you get shot or stabbed in combat you feel pain where youre wounded .. & theres a fan so that when you fly you feel the wind .. why not? i bet thers tech available like this .. what i think is that the grid needs to be completely redesigned so that there are no "sims" .. or rather one big sim .. the entire grid is the same big sim .. so that sailboats could go everywhere & not crash @ sim crossings .. & i think the "prim" needs to be eliminated .. its old tech .. i saw a video about how the wave of the future is millions of microscopic prim-like thingies .. & it makes the grafix soooo much better .. i didnt understand exactly how it works but LL could develop something like this .. but i dont think theres goin2 be great improvement until computers & the internet go fotonic rather than electronic .. & until the hardware engineers figure out how to dissipate heat better .. mebbe w/ radiators or something .. or w/ liquid N2 maybe id also like to see evry1 pay a user fee & then eliminate private property & the L$ .. the toy sl economy is what i like least about the game Jeanne

It's how they love to sensationalize that it happenned on the Interent. i agree w/ you Perrie .. iv been threatened be4 ~not in sl but online~ but i never really got too scared by it .. cuz i didnt really figure any1 was goin2 bother to actually travel to my physical location to harm me .. even if they did figure out where i am which i doubted they could LoL once this Irish guy told me he was goin2 have his homies in a NYC IRA cell come kill me .. but the doof was drunk .. i was actually agreeing w/ him but he took what i was saying wrong & said he was goin2 have the IRA get me :catlol: stuff like that is really more stupid & funny than scary me & this woman i knew from online really did bust a pedofile be4 tho .. i may have told this already .. dont remember .. but he sent us both pics of him or someone smearing **bleep** on what looked like a naked 10 or 11 yr old girl .. we contacted the FBI & he disappeared off the internet .. creeps like that deserve to be stalked or reported & busted .. but ordinary ppl just pissing someone off online i dont think has a whole lot to be scared of Jeanne

Even if the information was publicly posted, it still required another step for someone to make the association. Depending on your provider, how close I can nail down your general location can vary. It's getting to the specific exact location that will always require additional information. I hope in that situation that the information wasn't publicly available. Really, I don't understand what your comment is referring too other than to say some situations make it easier than others. yeah .. you could get the IP & put it in2 ISP Tracer & it would tell which floor of the dorm the person was on .. wouldnt identify the room & there were a lotuv women on each floor but still .. if someone was stalking you that was pretty scary .. & yeah .. my pt. is that some situations make it much easier for someone to find you from your IP than others Jeanne

The reasons have nothing at all to do with peak oil or other such mainstream media BS. Governments and oppression are the reasons. If you actually do real research, you will quickly find out that all of the waste and abusive of resources is directly caused by government intervention. This is not a political ideology or opinion, it's a fact. Even the notion of overpopulation is total BS that the media likes to scare people with, despite every major economic country declining in population massively. If the people of the world did not have governments using their various tools to control everything, we'd have innovation on a unprecidented scale. Heck, just eliminating all taxation of income would create such a boom that gas would instantly become a none issue in everyone's lives. Plus, we'd have peace around the world with little to no actual conflicts, as the evil people of the world would no longer have the resources to wage war. All government policies are about controlling the markets and their people. Not 1 policy has anything at all to do with helping people, only enslaving them. From patents, to gas taxes, it is all about control and oppression. SL alone should show the world that totally free markets can save humanity. Will there be theft, or crime? Of course, but actually less than we have now, and no 1 entity would be able to act without consequences. In a totally free market, everything is voluntary and without coersion. Government is, by it's very definition, force, as none of their policies can be enforced without the threat of violence. When the world wakes up from this nightmare, they will hopefully see that we have no use for national governments anymore. You should seriously read up on eugenics, because you are spouting their ideology, which are embedded in every part of our current paradyme. Most of what you will learn in school, comes directly from eugenic, just masked with fake science. It's all propaganda with no actual scientific evidence. When you research things, if you even do, you don't take highly paid government employees word for it. What you should do is actually analyze the studies and research that they cite. Once you do that, and understand a little about the scientific method, you will see quite clearly that it is all total and complete BS. what would i ever do w/out a GUY to 'splain stuff to ltl ole me ?!? 8. i showed SL to my husband .. he showed no interest @ all .. thot it was ridiculous .. to him computers are something to use for programming lathes or milling machines to cut metal .. not for making cartoon characters dance & blast one another i helped my mom get an account & put an avatar together .. we went dancing in a blues club .. she seemed to like choosing clothes & hair & shoes for her avatar .. but she wanted me to control her .. make her walk & dance & fly .. i tried to get her to take over & she did try it but was clumbsy & wanted me to do it while she watched .. once i left she never logged back in .. when i asked her why she said that she was "too busy" for SL .. i think that she just didnt care to bother to master it i told both my brothers about SL .. actually they both already knew about SL but didnt have accounts & never played it .. the older & more computer savvy of the 2 got an account & logged in2 SL .. but mostly just in order to figure out how to do it on his linux machine so he could show me .. he expressed an interest in open sim & said he might look in2 that cept he has 2 young children & says hes too busy for gaming these days .. both brothers play WoW or have played it .. & similar shoot em ups .. both said that SL is "for girls" & is all about virtual sex .. they kinda snickered about me playing it the woman i share rent on the house with got an account & downloaded a viewer on her laptop .. she made a male avatar .. shes an actress & maybe thot it would be fun to play a male role .. but her laptop simply wouldnt run SL worth a darn .. so she lost interest .. maybe she occasionally logs in w/ my computer while im not around .. i dunno .. but if she logs in w/ my account ill kill her !! my aunt .. moms younger sister .. plays LotR .. i showed her SL but as far as i know she never got an account .. my 14 yr old cousin spent a couple weeks w/ me this past summer & she saw me playing SL .. she didnt express much interest .. kinda to my relief .. i was afraid that she would want to lie about her age & get an account .. maybe she has back home but i doubt it .. i prolly woulduv heard about it if she did SOOooo ... im batting 0 when it comes to introducing ppl i know to SL & having them stick w/ it ... how about you ??? I love that so many get to have free fun, lots of what I do earns me nothing and costs nothing. But, SL offers so many other opportunites as well, I and many others get incredible satisfaction out of creating. There are many creative people (not me so much, blush) who use this and even the commerce as an outlet for those energies. I've tilted at this Linden windmill for about as long as I care to. /me puts down her torch and pitchfork and turns her back on Governor Lindens estate. yeah Trix .. i admire the creativity ppl exhibit in sl .. & honor it .. its just the economic aspect of buying & selling code for virtual objects that rubs me the wrong way .. i love sl very much but dont have a great deal of respect for LL management .. to put it mildly .. i dont trust them & dont want to contribute to their bottom line if i dont hav2 .. but to each his or her own! best wishes Jeanne

It's not too difficult in many cases to find out where someone lives just from seeing what they are talking about online. I think what goes on in sl is probably not much different than the internet in general and other sites such as topical forums, game sites, etc. I think the onus is on us as users of the internet to also protect ourselves. I've seen many instances where people logon to the net, not just sl, & expect all sorts without reading the fine print. Like anything in life, you need to know where you are going and what you are doing. With regards to sl, I treat it as I do any other place online & know that anything I say - well, may be used against me in a court of the universe - so to speak. In otherwords, if you don't want it to get out there, don't say it, post it, etc. Be aware. yep RD .. i agree with you .. be careful if you dont want ppl knowing who you are in rl or knowing where you live .. if you dont much care then dont worry about it .. good post! 14. this is 1uv the reasons why it makes no sense to become involved with sl's toy economy .. 1 day it says you have L$ in your account & next day its gone .. youre just SOL .. so why not just play for free have fun & not worrya bout L$ ?? that way you never get ripped off Jeanne
  15. Maeve Balfour wrote: Hi. I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum to place this, but this is a question I want to raise. I'm hoping merchants here might be able to offer advice. As a mesh creator (for private usage only) and as someone who is generally creative, I enjoy browsing through the latest mesh listings on the Marketplace to see what others are doing, and occasionally buying. Also, having personally been in mesh creation for years, I fully know what is and isn't possible within SL itself. This said, I can spot a faked non-SL 3D render a mile off - these are almost always a scammer attempting to rip off unknowing customers with an empty box, and running way with their money (I have seen the scathing reviews many times in the past, so it gives a good indication). Getting to my point - Over the past week, I have spotted what I am pretty sure is the same scammer ripping off customers over and over again with an empty box, always opening a new store (often within a day) of his/her prior one being closed down. Usually with the same or similar fake products, almost always using promo images lifted directly from turbosquid.com (I have been a member there for years, so I often recognise these stolen renders). As soon as an item gets a bad review, the scammer pulls it and relists it. When the store is shut down, the scammer just makes a new one with a new account (each account is always only a few days old). My gut feeling tells me this is the same individual - the stolen renders used for the fake promo images are usually from the same small group of turbosquid.com creators. Is there any way I can report this directly to LL? I'm not sure if it's appropriate to flag items as being relisted when it's a totally different store - but I am pretty certain this is a serial scammer operating. I have been alerting the relevant creators on turbosquid.com of their renders being lifted, but there's not much else I can do that I am aware of. My main concern is that in the meantime, unsuspecting customers are being ripped off over and over again (often to the tune of around L$10,000 per time), getting a bad experience and probably making them distrustful to the genuine merchants. Should I do anything? Or should I just ignore my conscience? id just ignore it Maeve .. LLs own business model encourages ripoffs .. its just 1 way certain unscrupulous ppl choose to play the game .. if ppl are getting ripped off over & over again they must be pretty dumb .. so long as you know better what business is it of yours ?? besides .. do you really think LL is going 2 do anythinga bout it ?? i dont even think they have the staff to investigate stuff like this .. but do what you will Jeanne
