Those would be them, Madchester, yeah. smiley-music021.gif

There used to be such a club but it closed ages ago. I don't even remember the name any more.

Is that a genre?
Is it a Grammy like category?

Yes, it is a music genre that falls under the large music category known as Alternative.    If Sy had posted them in actual chronological order...it would read like this:

Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, and the later-copy-cats...Oasis.  (note that the bands like to hype their "start dates"  from their early garage-band days...but for people to have actually heard of them...the order I posted is more reality)

Stone Roses being the best of the lot...as far as I'm concerned.

For those that like alternative music...The Church ..which is an Aussie band....preceded all the Manchester/Madchester bands and is even better.   (or maybe that's just me getting all flustered with Steve Kilbey's uber sexy voice... ; )

The late eighties did not exist to me (music as a genre,) but thank you for the link.  I will have to post my opinion after I listen to some tunes.  Not that my opinion counts.

ETA... Rap was early eighties, as it was the only 'different' music for that era - enough to be defined as a "genre".

There are some clubs that play a variety of alternative.  Try typing in Alternative Music Club in the destination guide and see what you come up with.  I think Manchester Rock, never heard the phrase, might be part of what is know as "indie"... I'm not sure exactly, but there might be some "indie" type clubs, though alternative might be your better bet, as well as just requesting the songs you love, or become a Dj and download all those songs and invite us :)

ETA:  Just checked the Destination Guide for you.  There is a club called Indie Rock open 24/7, but you need to join the group.  I didn't see any teleport, so you have to click on the word MORE and then the group joiner will appear.  Then just join for free.  Check it out, sounds like it has some sub-genres in there you may like.  Just a suggestion to try.

Madchester "rock" and the mentioned bands were actually a genre known as "rave" which sadly later mutated into "techno" by leaving out all the cool stuff and only hanging on to the rhythm and the silly whistles and huge clocks dangling from the necks of those "musicians".

Oasis don't fall in that genre. Just because they are from Manchester. doesn't make them a rave band.

Would the Smiths qualify?  'Cos they were way better than any of those other bands, Oasis included.  :matte-motes-smile:

I know of several clubs that play alternative rock / indie although none which specialise in what you're looking for.  Contact me inworld if you'd like me to throw you some LM's.

The Smiths were pre-Madchester, but definitely a Manchester group (as the poster asked for) so you could include,

Joy DivisionNew Order

and The Fall.

That was The Twisted Wheel Club in SL and yes, it is gone, resting in inventory of the creator, I suppose.

There was plenty around at the time that fell somewhere between rock & rave. I couldn't come up with a definitive definition of what made up the Madchester sound but I think it varied from listener to listener. Likewise, there are plenty of bands who aren't from Manchester, but who arguably fit in with the general 'baggy' feel in one way or another... like PWEI, Carter USM, Primal Scream and others. I guess it depends where you stood at the time.

I haven't been able to go inworld for a few days but I wanted to check out the Indie Rock place that Mayalily mentioned. THAT was the club I had been thinking of. It used to be a club but looks now to be a SL music stream only.

They played a variety of things, the main DJ named Space had a deep music vault. The majority was Manchester-ish rock. Good times. I'd like to find a similar place, not being too terribly stuck on "it has to be only Madchester, circa 1992" but that kind of groove. Gah. Did I just say groove? OK, time to knock off the typing. I just got back from what is often referred to as a pub crawl and it shows.

Ok, I will admit I have a vested interested in replying as I DJ at 2 places that you might be interested in.

The first is Alt7, pretty much SL's oldest and largest indiealt/rock club - many of us who DJ there play songs from Mancunian bands (and others from the Greater Manchester area).

There's also a superb recreation of the Fac51 Hacienda that I DJ at - again, it's a general indie/alt/rock club so we don't play exclusively Manchester rock (or Madchester as some people also call it) but a fair few will usually crop up in many sets.

Certainly at my sets, and this will go for most of the other DJs (though not all), any requests for Manc indie fit in perfectly if you want us to play more :)

A.A.I. is also another club you might be interested in, they have some great DJs too. There's also the Hanky Panky Room and PopScene to look out for.

Feel free to search my name in word and check my picks for more details about Alt7 and Fac51 Hacienda. I will also be playing the latter at 2pm SLT today.

Sadly, IndieRock 24/7 is no longer in SL. Space Grelling only logs in occassionally these days though hopefully he will be back one day soon.

There is club called The Hacienda in SL, modelled on the RL club, where, unsurpisngly, they tend to play the music genre under discussion. However, on the occasions I've been there, it's been pretty quiet.

A friend of mine who has DJ'd there in the past, DJs at SL Dublin (each Saturday 1-3 pm SLT) playing indie/alternative/Madchester sounds.

Yay! Thanks for the great suggestions everyone. The club suggestions on this page especially sound [sic] like a great time. Time to dig out some dance ao's. Time to get this party started.

ETA: Time to dig out the thesaurus for the word time.

PS. I'm feeling a bit peevish and apprehensive and wonder if this thread will be deleted for offending stadium rock or blues fans or if it will be deleted or if half of the posts will go missing for no transparent rhyme or reason since that has been happening to every other place here I post.

What's your problem? Do you only like people with blue skin or something?

Or Chelsea supporters perhaps, although that would be more understandable.

Blue skin? Are you speaking of race, colour or ethnicity? Oh, right, those are all the same thing. I seem to remember reading that somewhere on the Internet so it must be true. :sarcasm emoticon:  Interracial perhaps? --->
