Welcome to Second Life Answers, fern119

First of all, Second Life isn't a game in the conventional sense of the word.  There are no specific goals set, and no rewards for passing go, as with Monopoly, for example.

You can earn money by finding employment inworld.  Some jobs can be found on the employment section of these forums. Or you can learn how to build and create things to sell to other people.

My advice to you would be to become familiar with all that Second Life has to offer.

Good luck to you.

The easiest way to get money in SL is to get a job in RL. It pays a lot better than a job in SL and it means that you will be able to enjoy more of your time in world.  After all, why would you want to come to a vacation from your daily life and spend it working?  The exchange rate is about L$1,000 for every $4 US, so a dollar that you bring in world goes a long way in Second Life.  Not only that, but SL is loaded with good quality free clothing and other items, so you can do quite well without spending a penny.

If you really want to work, that's fine.  Creative people have a ball making things, scripting, trading real estate, performing in clubs, and building in Second Life.  Very few of us do it for the money, though.  We do it because we like to be creative and we get a kick from the fact that people buy the things we make.  This is not a game.  It is a second life.  We earn money (if we do) because we want to, not because we have to.

By far, the easiest and more cost effective way of gaining money is for your "human" to buy it for you. By doing an hour of overtime your "human" will have earnt ten-hundred times more than your "avatar" can possibly dream of. Of course, there are other reasons to want a job - personally, my avatar works for a sense of personal worth and to help with inworld conversations. If you are coming onto Second Life to make a small fortune, don't bother as you can earn substantially more by mowing lawns, washing cars or doing some other menial work in real life.

The fastest and easiest way is to buy linden.  But, if you really do not wish to do that and are ok with living SL on a limited budget then you can try the below:

If you are less than 30 days old there might still be a few money trees around...check in search,, tp to a money tree location and look for Lindens growing on the branches for those new to take. There may also be a few camping spots left where you are paid to sit or hang around a certain area.  You would find these in search too.  This will only generate a few linden

There are contests you could enter that give linden look for them in search/events tab

Someone recently mentioned "cone jumping' as a way to earn linden...I know nothing about this but you could check in search

There are help wanted ads in the Forums Wanted section and the inworld classified ads.

Do you have a RL skill that could be helpful in SL like graphic design or mad photoshop skills? You could create a book of examples and try to sell your service to shop owners.

It will take lots of time to first learn and then to manage but you could learn to create something that other people would want to buy and sell via the Marketplace or with an inworld shop.
