There are many possible reasons why you might have trouble logging in. Rather than guess, here's a handy summary of the most common reasons. It's provided by the Firestorm support crew but the same advice applies to any viewer you might be using .  Chances are very good that you will find something that applies to your specific problem.

This is a user-to-user public forum, so the advice you are likely to hear is coming from other SL residents.  Lindens rarely come here and almost never respond to individual questions in the forum.  Once you have read the suggestions in that site, if you are still having trouble you should submit a Support Case or (if you are a Premium member) contact Live Chat to get help from Linden Lab.

If you have logged in, you have started "the game". You decide what to do next, where to go, who to talk with ...   Learn enough of the basics from the Knowledge Base or the helpful people at the Welcome Hub in world so you can move around without bouncing into walls or people, and then go for it. 

There is no scripted way to spend your time in world. This is just like life outside of SL except that you can fly and teleport. If you want to explore, explore. Use the Destination Guide and see what's out there.  If you want to meet someone, find a place where people are likely to congregate (a concert, maybe or a club) and introduce yourself, or join a group that shares your interests. In RL, you'd face the same challenges if you moved to a new community and didn't know anyone.

@larry1065, can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing when you are "logged in but can't start"?
