Look to the left of your viewer in the middle if you are using Firestorm viewer.

On the left there is a grey tab with a white tab in the middle (see screenshot below - just left of my hud that says DANCE).  Click on that grey tab and it will open your DESTINATION GUIDE.

In the Destination Guide there are categories there such as Editor's Choice, Chat Hot Spots, Romance.

Click on each of those squares in the Destination Guide to see what's happening now and how many people are there (see 2nd Screenshot Below).

There are many categories there, so look through them all.  The Guide helps you get "around" and to see some new or limited special builds also...all kinds of things.

Two busy places that come to mind are Wet Willies and Big Daddy's.   Again, click on each square and then scroll through the list of each category.

Big events can be a good way to meet people. They last a few days at least, have community groups where people chat, and have lots of little events within the event. Upcoming examples include Fantasy Faire (which starts next week) and the Second Life Birthday (SL17B). They'll appear in the destination guide, but they'll often be advertised with the login messages as well.

Usually SL is completely empty and hard to meet people on the game to make friends, so where is it that people usually congregate?

Most of the time, people tend to congregate only at events (clubs etc) such as DJs or live music.  This means that searching Events listings is likely to yield better results than just searching for places.

There are other types of events though, it's not all about music and clubbing. There's a variety of sporting activities going on in SL, such as sailing and motor-sports, and these are also a good way to get involved in group activities. Another one is roleplay, of which there are many different types including high fantasy, "slice of life" suburban communities, cyberpunk, old west, post-apocalyptic and more. Some roleplay is sexual but by no means all of it.

There are other sorts of clubs that have group events too; writing and poetry, religious groups, BDSM discussion groups, educational groups, support groups, meditation groups and more. All of these types of groups have events where people gather. For these, it's better to search out a few groups on topics that interest you and check the group notices to see if they list any events privately (not all groups use the general events listings as some meetings are restricted to members only).

Right now is probably the best time to start looking; while everyone's in lockdown and has more time to go in-world, the number of active users is much higher now than it was a couple of months ago.
