Nyll Bergbahn Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I'm sure many people are familiar with the 1908 Tunguska event in Russia but if not look here http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2008/30jun_tunguska/ Lat night, another meteorite exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk east of the Urals, some 1500 km east of Moscow. this time thankfully a relatively minor event but nevertheless, hundreds of people are said to have been injured by glass shattered by the sonic boom (some reports suggest falling debris has caused injuries as well).There are many eye witness accounts and videos and these are spectacular.Here are a few links, Google will show a lot more. Only about 28000 KM away, closer than some of our orbiting satellites! It is a busy day for Earth astronomically speaking

After developing the technology and travelling all those light years across interstellar space, you'd think they would have known how to enter a planetary atmosphere without exploding their spaceship! I've seen many meteor showers and even the occasional fireball but absolutely nothing on the scale of this one over Russia. Amazing! Yes I know about the asteroid passing by the Earth today.
