Animated Friend?

I see on the market many pets one can
Buy that will follow them around. Is there a such thing as buying an "avatar" or a "person" that will hang out with you?

I don't know if anyone sells one, but one could be made pretty easily. Using the follower scripts available on the lsl, perhaps getting some scripting help form those who know how if you do not, you could easily create a "friend".

It's certainly not easy due to the lack of a rigged skeleton for animations, there are ways and means of doing it, but it's not straight forward. Pathfinding will help with the following part and that's not too troublesome but making it walk nicely is a bit more tricky.

Get a second account, a double log-in, and a follow script.

A lot of people you see with a wench stapled to their side are already using this.

There used to be a program named Avapet which, I believe, will no longer work, that did that with an avatar on a second account.  It could do a lot more besides following at a specified distance.  You could give it orders via IM to do a lot of different things, like interact with other avatars and objects, chat, etc.

It was fun.  I had a dog avatar that I would log on with it so he followed me around.  I wish we still had something like that.

Maybe you could endevor to do a scripted agent like Hal Titanium. I'm not sure how involved that is though.

In the Test Client of the OpenMV system, there's a command to have a bot avatar follow a normal avatar. Is that what you say no longer works? If it's not, then a bot can easily be made (just using the Test Client) to follow an avatar, although the Test Client example causes the bot to get right up close and touch the av being followed. It used to do that, anyway, but it's been at least a year since I did anything with OpenMV, and even then was using a version that was several years old.

It's been a long while since I tested it but the Radegast viewer let you log in an avatar and then you can IM the avatar with commands to follow and do other stuff.
